Leiliana's death exposed a crisis at Child Protective Services, prompting firings, resignations and finger-pointing at the state agency charged with protecting abused children.

Prosecutors showed the jury Chandler's photos from the crime scene, including images of the bamboo switch Phifer is accused of beating Leiliana to death with, as well as a pair of little girls' jeans tangled up in three belts. Later, Chandler held up the switch, the belts, and the pants before the jury.

Crime-scene investigator Amanda Page testified that officials cut out a piece of the wall inside the closet where Leiliana's mother said the little girl had been tied up. Grand Prairie crime-scene team lead Christine Smith testified that she'd been asked to preserve a hair that had gotten stuck in the wall.

Later, forensic analyst Kristen Smith testified that the hair was consistent with a DNA profile for Leliana.

Testimony in the trial will continue Friday morning.

The mother of a beaten 4-year-old Grand Prairie girl said her memory of what happened the day she died is limited.

Jeri Quezada took the stand again Thursday in the capital murder trial for her ex-boyfriend, Charles Phifer.

Quezada’s mother, Adeline Carr, is a retired Grand Prairie Swim Coach and the grandmother of Leiliana. She did not answer questions as she left the courtroom.

Carr showed no emotion during her testimony. During cross-examination, she claimed not to be aware of her daughter’s ongoing drug abuse, including the day of Leiliana’s death. But she also acknowledged knowing her daughter could be deceitful.

In addition to claiming she did not see any signs of her daughter’s drug use, Carr also said she never saw signs of abuse against her granddaughter. She told jurors Leiliana loved to color, play with chalk and read stories.

Testimony will resume Friday morning in the trial of a man accused of beating his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter to death.

Wright’s death became a scathing indictment of systemic Child Protective Services failures.

“If I testify truthfully, then I will be sentenced to 50 years in prison,” Quezada told jurors Thursday while dressed in a jail inmate jumpsuit.

According to testimony from both Quezada and Carr, the family went out to dinner and left Phifer at home to watch Leiliana. Quezada returned home and testified that she and Phifer used heroin before she inquired about her daughter. According to police testimony, that’s when Phifer told her “that the child had been hung in the closet.”

Oh no, I was so worried about them. It hurts me to see your post and know they are in such pain. Thank you, katy_did_not.

It is good to see you again .... we have been together here for over a year, since last September, waiting and caring. I have worrried over the paternal grandparents for so long. I do hope they have community support through and after this. Their pain will not end with the trial.

:(

Girl, 4, suffered 'death of a thousand cuts,' medical examiner says at Dallas murder trial | Courts | Dallas News

Four-year-old Leiliana Wright was black and blue from head to toe and had at least 30 bruises on her back after she was beaten to death in 2016, a medical examiner testified Friday.

Prosecutors rested their case Friday after a medical examiner testified about the extent of Leiliana's injuries. Her entire body was covered in bruises and abrasions. She died from blunt-force injuries to her abdomen and head.

"It's a death of a thousand cuts," said Marc Krouse, chief deputy medical examiner in Tarrant County.

Several jurors cried and looked away after they were shown the autopsy photos of Leiliana's body. Bruises covered nearly her entire face and peppered her body. Krouse estimated her back had at least 30 separate bruises that looked like whip marks.

Med. examiner: ...
most of the bruises and wounds on Leiliana's body after her death were fresh and that the recent beating was the cause of her death.

The autopsy found at least one healing bruise and an abscess in the little girl's bowel from an abdominal injury that probably had occurred in the days before her death, the medical examiner testified.
