On this map I have pinned some points of interest. The first thing of note is that there are two definite clusters. Her time in Texas and various cities in the SW corner of the US. Second, for some reason I had not realized how close the Boulder City, NV/Maildrop location was to Las Vegas. I don't know why, but I assumed it was more northern Nevada. That could have easily been a stop on the way to the second Vegas wedding- I wonder if they drove or flew?
Bakersfield is near enough to Los Angeles, connection there being BST birthplace and various notes pages references. If she spent significant time in the LA area before becoming BST it is possible that a local paper ran a story about the Turner family deaths, that could be how she picked up the name/info on BST. I wasn't able to find any news articles, but I don't subscribe to paid archives. That might be worth looking up if someone has access. The LA area also has quite a few beloved Cuban restaurants that were around in the 80's. The Pacific North West isn't really known for it's Cuban culture.
Just throwing some ideas out, seeing if anything sticks!

I would add Tuscon to the map. The notes page had references to Tuscon numbers and if I recall, she wrote "made up" next to one of them. I would also add the Trittifin (sp?) Pennsylvania library location. I also question whether Colorado should be added. I can't recall specifics, but does anyone else recall from the notes page research that there may have been Colorado phone numbers with a reference to "ours" OR AM I CONFUSING THINGS?

As an after thought, if you throw Colorado on the map and then look at it, New Mexico sticks out like a sore thumb as being totally void. Just thinking out loud, but if that was where I was running from, I'd not want to leave any trail there. Just a thought.

Having worked in the court system for most of my life, I started to study the name change documents more closely. Here is the timeline surrounding that.

July 5' 1988. Appears in court for the name change.

Here was the missing piece I overlooked the first time:

July 11, 1988. Official name change issued. (Second to last document in the document thread , certified copy of name change issued july 11, 1988. She would have needed a certified copy for the social security administration for the name change. )

July 12, 1988. Application for social security number.

This means she physically was in possession of the official name change document on either July 11 or July 12.

We are missing an important piece of the name change court record. There had to be a part of the name change application that was filed with the court that contained her address and phone number at the time of application. Since the Order wasn't issued until 6 days later, she had to have a way of getting the order by mail OR she called the clerk everyday to find out when it was ready and take the chance they wouldn't mail it, OR Made a connection with one of the clerks and instructed or asked them to hold it when it was ready so she could pick it up or to call her when it was ready. If she did it this way, then she had to have made a person to person connection with someone in that office. If she had it mailed, then we need to find out that address because it may be the most legitimate address of all of the addresses that we have looked at thus far. OR if she instructed them to call her, the phone number on the application may be the most legitimate phone number of all of the phone numbers we have looked at thus far. If it was mailed, and she used the Nevada mailbox, with the way the mail was back then, I doubt she would have gotten it that quickly.

If she simply instructed them to hold it til she picked it up, we are out of luck here. But if the court documents show an address and phone number, we may have another lead. Or, we may have a lead if she made a person to person connection in the courthouse.

Does anyone have the ability to get the COMPLETE name change record?

APRIL 7, 2016: I PULLED ONE OF MY POSTS OVER FROM AN OLD THREAD "Food for thought" thread that has a timeline. It appears relevant here in connection with the maps. I would add to this timeline that Bakersfield received the request for birth certificate on May 20, 1988 and receipted payment on May 23, 1988. IIRC it was a mail request and they mailed it back to the mail drop in Boulder City. The Idaho ID was obtained on June 16, 1988. See photos thread for verification of these dates. On July 5, 1988 she APPEARS in court for the name change. This is 19 days of travel, not 30. This also means that sometime BEFORE July 5, 1988, she filed a petition for the name change. If she had it ready to go, she could have mailed the petition from the road, OR she was in Texas much sooner than the 19 days and filed it personally. As I pointed out in my prior post, we are missing that piece. Quickly after that court date she applied for the social security card as soon as she got the name change Order. If you assume three days for mail from Bakersfield to the Nevada drop box, it took her from May 26, 1988 to June 16, 1988 to get the Idaho ID. THATS ASSUMING SHE GOT TO THE DROP BOX RIGHT AWAY. Memorial Day in 1988 was the 30th. Kinda wondering if she went and saw family in one of these several States on her way to Idaho. OR is Memorial Day a big thing in Vegas for dancers to make money so she waited? OR was it some combination of both? Something slowed her down during this time; because she moved like lightening after she got that ID. Could be mode of travel, business opportunity, and stopping to see people for the last time. Just wanted to put all the dates in one place for everyone's consideration and ideas.

FURTHER THOUGHTS.
Maybe we should have different maps for different theories.

FLDS.

Boulder city mail drop is three hour drive to Short Creek. Then from Short Creek to Boise, it is a nine hour drive.

LEBARON

Boulder City to Denver is 11 hours. Then from there it is 12 hours to Boise. Trip to parts of Mexico, who knows!
Boulder City to Dallas where all the killings were going on at the time, well, I'd stay in Vegas. Parts of the family were in AZ at the time as well.

---------------------------------------------------------------

No matter what theory you go with, it took her from the May 23 time stamped birth certificate receipt until June 16 to get the Idaho ID. The Boulder City Dropbox had to be on a planned route of travel. Either travel, mode of travel, origin of travel, other duties, or visiting had to have slowed her down. Perhaps she WAS a good distance away from the mail drop and she wanted to give the birth certificate plenty of time to get there before she did.

I am blanking out.. Did the article say the Idaho ID went to Nevada drop box?
So if it did, she had to have it in the name Becky Sue, right? So how did she set up the drop box without an ID??

Yes, accused, then it was dismissed.
The last names are not the same. One is Blake, the other is Blakely

It was dismissed the following year. If Lori was the victim, it would have been dismissed due to her death probably.

I'll add both of those, as well as a list indicating which city each pin references. I'm going to give it a day or two to see if any other cities onto mind & then I'll post it in the photos-no discussion forum. Thanks!
New Mexico is interesting. Utah and Oregon are also going to be empty. It's like she completely avoided anything to do with those states. Or could be coincidence. Will have to think on that.

To be fair, Jon Blakely Ruff went by the name Blake. His middle name could be his mothers maiden name, a common practice in the south. IF the judge was a relative that is a definite conflict of interest in dismissing any criminal charges.
I understand we are here to figure out Lori, not bash & speculate on the Ruff family, but it is interesting to note.

Great map. Not sure how the dates match up but the drive from Los Angeles and Boulder City is only about 4.5 hours. Short enough to go and back in a day, cheap enough to go multiple times.

I have friends that drive to Vegas from LA regularly for a getaway.

Yes. My mom is from the south. My brother's middle is her maiden name. But he hates it.

I'm putting this here to remind myself later, but also to prompt discussion: In the Kim Mallon thread the connection to Colorado is made. The 303-293-2333 phone number for the notes page has been connected to an attorney Miles Gersh and associates- specializing in securities fraud, ponzi schemes, and STOCKBROKER fraud and litigation. They have been in business for 40 years. In the Mallon thread there is info about the number previously being associated with Mallon Resources. I called the number today and it is connected to the Gersh and Thomaidis Law office. They are based in Denver.
Since we know Kim Mallon is ruled out, I am sticking with the connection to the Gersh law office.

Hi folks, this is the form to make a FOIA request to the Social Security Administration. https://secure.ssa.gov/apps9/eFOIA-FEWeb/internet/main.jsp?action=OPD Because I live outside the US it doesn't look like it will accept my address in the web form so I am not able to do it. Per Linda9681's suggestion, I think this would be a great next step to see if there is a broader file of Velling's that we could gain access to. Does anyone here have some time to fill in the form?
I am happy to fill it out. What does everyone think is the most inclusive wording I can use to describe the information I am requesting. There is a 2000 character limit. Thank you for the suggestions.

I'd be interested to know whether our poster SS1988 ever contacted Velling as was suggested in this thread. Basically I'd like to know the next chapter of Vellings investigations.

Some interesting records from Fannin County, TX court case searches (for their Leonard, TX residence):

An Assault charge dated 9-18-2010, Case CR10-0144JP2

On the divorce case: it was filed 8-5-2010, Case FA10-39830, the last motions and citations filed 12-14-2010
were just 10 days before Lori's suicide

http://www.co.fannin.tx.us/default.aspx?Fannin_County/Public.Records.Search

Thanks for sharing this. Unfortunately, none of the actual paperwork is online, so to learn more one must visit the county courthouse.

In any case, added to what we know from other sources, we can construct a fairly detailed time line for the last year of LEK's life:

* April 24 2010 – Attends her first meeting with the TBW of Bonham & Fannin Counties http://www.ntxe-news.com/cgi-bin/artman/exec/view.cgi?archive=39&num=62028
* May 2010 – Attended meeting of Texas Business Woman of Bonham and Fannin Counties http://www.ntxe-news.com/cgi-bin/art...e=38&num=62394
* Summer 2010 -- JBR moves out http://old.seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2021243552_janedoexml.html
* June 2010 – Attended meeting of Texas Business Woman of Bonham and Fannin Counties, elected secretary http://www.ntxe-news.com/cgi-bin/art...e=39&num=62769
* August 2010 – Attended meeting of Texas Business Woman of Bonham and Fannin Counties http://www.ntxe-news.com/cgi-bin/art...3743&printer=1
* August 5 2010 -- JBR files for divorce (Case FA10-39830). However, the initial summons was not served.
* September 2 2010 -- LEK files counter claim/counter petition in divorce case
* September 9 2010 -- Judge Laurine Blake issues temporary orders in divorce case
* September 18 2010 – JBR called police to report harassment by LEK, when they arrive, LEK showed bruises so he was charged for misdemeanor assault of LEK (Case CR10-0144JP2)
* October 1 2010 -- Hearing in divorce case; judge Blake issues temporary orders (Maybe when LEK was ordered to "cease and desist" after a number of threatening incidents?)
* October 12 2010 – Attends her last meeting with TBW of Bonham & Fannin Counties
* November 22 2010 -- Hearing on motion in divorce case
* December 20 2010 – LEK served with divorce papers
* December 24, 2010 - LEK commits suicide in Longview, Texas
* January 3 2011 – Ruff family buries LEK http://www.tributes.com/obituary/show/Lori-Erica-Ruff-90422742
* January 2011 - Ruff family finds strongbox showing Lori was not who she claimed (Notes found in lockbox)
* March 3 2011 – “Affidavit of Heirship” filed making DJG & LR grantors, & LR grantee. Used to clear title of property for JBR to sell
* April 2011 – Assault charges against JBR dismissed

However, it's not clear to me when neighbor (& pastor) Denny Gorena provided counseling to JBR & LEK from what this timeline offers.

One thing that looks odd to me is that it took a surprisingly long time for the assault charges against JBR to be dismissed; I'd expect either a court date within a few months of the alleged incident, or that it was dismissed within a few weeks or a month of LEK's death. Maybe there just was too much going on at the time for the family lawyer to handle. (No, I'm not claiming any kind of importance to this. Just pointing out it looks odd to me.)

I had it backwards- the Judges last name is Blake. I doubt there is a connection.

I haven't filled in anything like this before but I think you need to mention the following types of things:
- that you're requesting access to Velling's full notes and reports related to his investigation into LER/LEK/BST - including any supporting documentation or evidence on file
- Specify start and end dates as close to what we know - i.e. think somewhere it is mentioned when he started working on the case - through to his date of retirement.
- I would also specifically request any other documentation, notes or reports pertaining to the case that may have been completed by another agent who picked up the case following Velling's retirement.

I don't know if they would agree to all that but it can't hurt to ask for it right.

I'm sure others might have suggestions of ways to phrase it - especially those with experience working in LE etc.

Thank you! I can't figure out how to make those maps. I knew you could do it!! :)

I'd like to know how well that resume was vetted and whether she filed any income tax returns. Would also like to know whether he obtained the application for the name change. Would also like a list of names of the people interviewed in the case and their statements. I'd also like to know who their current lead is (which I'm sure they won't give us)! I'd also like to know who FLEK was!!!!!!! I also want my two front teeth for Christmas. Is that asking TOO much? :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Llrwych, can you tell me where you got the information about the specifics of the assault charge? Bruises, harassment, police called, etc. I don't recall seeing that before. Thanks.

  • #239
I thought I read she went to ID to get the ID and that may have been in Velling's interview. AND she would have had to get it in person to get her picture taken for it.

  • #240
I meant how did she open a mail box without ID. I assume she opened it in the name Becky Sue since she had the birth certificate mailed to that box ( in Nevada)
