GUILTY TX - Maleah Davis, 4, Houston, 5 May 2019 *EX-FIANCÉ ARRESTED* #12

I don't think it's anything more than proper etiquette to consult the family of a deceased loved one if you are going to use their name, photo, etc. for a memorial of some kind.

I remember in another case where a fundraiser was started for a memorial bench in a park which the victim's family had no idea about and didn't approve. It was eventually taken down but not before it caused quite a bit of a stir. Most people considered the fact that the family wasn't consulted as completely uncalled for, especially during their time of grief. MOO

I agree that it was just good etiquette and courtesy to consult her family. Some families in this scenario might, for example, object to her name/memorial being established near the place where she was dumped, instead preferring that any memorials to her be kept close to home where she was when she was alive. All speculation, you just never know how grieving people will react.

I think the most interesting thing about the reference is that no one said her mother was consulted.

Yes, I think they are just being respectful.
Although her dad did not have physical custody he still has parental rights.
BB had physical custody but I noticed there was no mention of her. Imo

'Why kill a 2-year-old?' Texas authorities urging public to look out for 'dangerous' individuals
[...]

"Why kill a 2-year-old?" said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said during a press conference. "Three people could have ended up dead."

Gonzalez went on to say that Harris County has seen too much loss of life especially when it comes to children. He included Kamren Cassius Jones, Jazmine Barnes and Maleah Davis as examples.

"This is simply unacceptable," said Gonzalez. "As a community we can't accept it."

I don't disagree whatsoever but no parent in this situation has custody. I withhold judgment on all, it just seems odd they mention this. One of the fundraising articles did the same with the petition.

My heart breaks for Maleah but as far as I know CPS and the state is custodial and plenty of people have their opinions of that agency as well. One won't find too many remarks of mine with a decision regarding any of them, bio mom, bio dad or the agency, I wait to see.

So I get your point and do not disagree but I still find it an odd remark in the article. As I did in one of the fundraising articles.

I do know or hope though we all agree that it is about Maleah and hoping for change and honoring her is not anything I would ever disagree with.

To me, that comment stuck out like a sore thumb in that article. Just as the petition did in the fund raising article.

Arkansas sheriff leads effort to rename bridge in honor of Maleah Davis
[...]

Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton is leading the effort to rename the Red Lake Road Bridge over the interstate at Exit 18.

Singleton says the name change has been in process since he submitted a letter to the Arkansas Transportation Department on June 4 requesting for it to be named the “Maleah Davis Memorial Bridge.” Such requests for name changes are subject to approval by the highway department.

Singleton says the formal letter is the first of three criteria required to submit the renaming request to the Arkansas Highway Commission. A resolution must also be passed by the county’s quorum court, which was done on June 24. They also must have permission from a family member. Singleton says he has received that blessing from Maleah’s biological father, Craig Davis.
The process could take up to two months. Once approved, Singleton says they will begin the process of ordering the sign to state specifications. The highway department will install the signage.

[...]

When the signs are approved and installed, Singleton plans to hold a dedication inviting the public, Davis’s family, and media. He says several Houston officers have also expressed an interest in attending.

Singleton says they are “just trying to provide a means to honor this young baby,” and remember all missing and exploited children in the U.S.

[...]

“We hope everyone remembers she was a part of Hempstead County, no matter how tragic,” said Singleton.

I haven't found any hearing dates but the Grand Jury next meets August 5.

In order to search the criminal courts by defendant you have to provide a name, pw and email then it's a free search. I'm debating on whether or not I want to sign up.

ETA: Oops, I spoke too soon. Vence's next court date is listed in the inmate roster as July 10.
Case number 163111001010
Charge TAMP W/EVIDENCE - HUMAN CORPSE
Court 180

The fact that a sheriff is leading the effort to honor Maleah is a dose of reality for me. Do we really think about the police on the front lines who had to investigate this sickening case and those who had to recover her body?

We are horrified and angry with what happened with Maleah, I can't imagine how this has affected the police officers who actually lived the nightmare behind the scene.

And all is quiet....hoping this is the calm before the storm....Justice cometh!

I too am hoping for some news this week and charges of murder at least. Hopefully even with the holiday week, there has been enough time to talk with the experts re the autopsy results, get the formal report and review the case.

Thank you. :)

While that was not my reaction when I first saw the headlines, it was a indeed a dose of reality by the time I reached the bottom of the page. I remember that Sheriff, and how he said he had grandchildren, and knew enough about little girls clothes to say they located a child.

I'd like to think this bridge also Maleah's tribute to the officers, and searches that stood strong on her behalf.
