BCSO: Man charged after 7-week-old baby diagnosed with multiple skull fractures
Bexar County deputies arrested a man who allegedly caused severe head trauma and other injuries to a 7-week-old child.
Zachary Richard Hale, 32, was taken into custody Tuesday on suspicion of injury to a child.
Doctors discovered the child suffered from multiple skull fractures, a rib fracture and retinal hemorrhages, according to the arrest affidavit. The baby had emergency surgery and remains in critical condition.
When detectives interviewed Hale, he detailed multiple incidents where the child was injured.
When the child was 2-weeks-old, Hale told deputies that he left the baby on her back on the sofa while he went to the bathroom. When he returned, he said the baby was lying on the floor face down with bruising on her chin and knot on her head.
The most recent injury occurred on Oct. 1, Hale told detective. He said he was showering with the baby and because they were both lathered up, the baby slipped out of his arms and hit the faucet before falling to the floor.
Later that day he tossed the baby up in the air 7 to 10 times, according to the affidavit, which caused the baby to vomit.
Hale was arrested on a $100,000 bond, according to jail records.
