Details of Disappearance
Chabarria was last seen in Arlington, Texas on April 1, 1997. He attended a meeting at approximately 6:00 p.m. at Harrigan's Restaurant, his place of employment. Chabarria was driving his partially primed, red-striped 1987 Honda Civic at the time. He has never been heard from again.

Chabarria resided with a roommate in Arlington in 1997. He was reported as a missing person after his employer failed to make contact him. Chabarria and his roommate had different schedules and did not see each other often. His roommate stated, however, that Chabarria had been drinking heavily at the time of his disappearance and was also sleeping for extended periods. Chabarria's mother had noticed he looked sick and asked him if he was using drugs, but he denied it. All of Chabarria's personal belongings, including clothing and toiletries, were left behind in his residence.

Chabarria's vehicle was discovered abandoned on May 17, 1997, more than one month after his disappearance. The vehicle was located covered with mesquite in a brush-filled area on private property off of Farm Road 2119 in Culberson County, Texas. There was no sign of Chabarria at the scene. The keys were in the ignition and the windows were rolled down. A shotgun box was in the backseat, and six empty bottles, a pack of cigarettes, an empty picture frame and two boxes of shotgun shells were scattered around.

Authorities determined the shotgun that had been in the box had been bought at a Wal-Mart in Bedford, Texas a few days after Chabarria disappeared, but they were unable to determine the identity of the purchaser. Chabarria's loved ones do not believe he was suicidal at the time of his disappearance, and suggested he bought the gun for hunting.

Chabarria's parents resided in the Fort Worth, Texas area in 1997. They stated it's uncharacteristic of their son to leave without warning. His maternal grandparents lived in the Pecos, Texas area in the past. His mother theorized her son may have driven to Culberson County to search for their former home. The theory has never been proven.

Foul play is suspected in Chabarria's case, which remains unsolved.

Sheriff to issue statement on missing man

By ROSIE FLORES
Staff Writer

PECOS, May 27, 1997 - The search continues for a 25-year-old young man
whose car was found in the area.

The Van Horn Sheriff's Department is currently preparing a press release
with new information on the mystery surrounding the disappearance of
Manuel Chabarria, Jr.
Chabarria's car was found in Culberson County, off of Farm Road 2119 on
private property. The property owner found the car and reported it to
the sheriff's department.
Lydia and her husband, Manuel Chabarria, Sr. were in Pecos last
Wednesday visiting the site where their son's car was found abandoned
and taking a look at the car itself in an effort to solve the puzzle.
Manuel Chabarria, Jr. has been missing since April 1, following a
meeting held at his place of employment.
The family currently resides in the Fort Worth area, but the elder
Chabarria was raised in Pecos.
"We don't suspect theft either since nothing was missing," said Mrs.
Chabarria. "No toiletries, no clothes, nothing was missing," she said.
"I was from Pecos originally and at first we thought maybe he came to
look for my parent's home, which nobody is living in at this time," said
Mr. Chabarria.
However, when Chabarria contacted his sister who still lives in Pecos,
she had not seen or heard from the young man. "I had her go check out my
parents home as soon as we found out the car had been found here," said
Mr. Chabarria.
"Up until Sunday we had no idea in which direction he had gone to, or
where to even begin looking for him," said Mrs. Chabarria.
The family is asking the public to help in their search for their son.
Manuel Chabarria, Jr. is a 25-year-old Hispanic male, born Feb. 24,
1972. He is a 5'6" tall and weighs about 125-130 pounds. Manuel has
curly dark brown hair and brown eyes.
The car their son was driving is a 1987 Honda Civic, which is partially
primed, with some red stripes.
Both sheriff's department personnel were out at the scene Tuesday and
sent out a helicopter within a 10-mile radius, according to Mr.
Chabarria.
"They thought maybe he took off on foot or something," he said.
"At this point, we don't want to think the worst," said Mrs. Chabarria.
The Chabarrias are hoping their son just needed some time to himself and
is doing fine.
"We just want to know that he's all right," said Mrs. Chabarria. "I'm
clinging to the hope that he is fine and will contact us soon, because
we love him," she said.
The couple urge their son or anybody who might be in contact with him to
contact them and let them know of his whereabouts.
If anybody has any information they can contact the Texas Department of
Public Safety, Missing Persons Clearinghouse at 1-800-346-3243.
"The state police was here Thursday, but they haven't given us their
report yet," said Pecos Police Chief Troy Moore.
The agency sent out two men and a lady to lift prints off the car, do
forensic work and check for clues, according to Moore.
The search continues for a 25-year-old young man whose car was found in
the area.

I was researching unidentified remains found in Utah when I came across Manuel. Several similarities IMO.

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) UP9835

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation were searching for 3 fugitives in rural Utah when they found the decedent's skeletal remains. The decedent was a young hispanic male that had a calf roping belt buckle and cowboy boots. He may have been traveling from El Paso to Los Angeles.

Items found with decedent: Black glove, Flashlight, Plastic container of .22 long rifle cartridges with 8 missing, Brown wallet $21.00, Ford truck key, Long distance calling card, Ticket with "El Paso" and "Los Angeles" written on top

Not likely, Manuel Jr. went missing 1997, if they think that guy was there for 2 years it's likely bc the ticket from El Paso to LA was dated.

From Arlington (place of employment) to Bedford (assuming he purchased the gun) to Culberson County, TX (vehicle location) - greater than 500 miles. I wonder if Manuel knew the owner of the property where his vehicle was found? And if so, did he previously hunt on that property?
