This is so sad.

I get a de ja vu feeling with this case- sounds so very very similar to Adam Gilbertson's case. Totally heartbreaking, if this is Martin that was found deceased. Whoever it is, may the rest in peace, thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
It's difficult to deny that it's probably him. Is anyone else missing from the area? And it's so close to where he was spotted on surveillance camera.

Reminds me as well of Shane Montgomery who left a bar in freezing temps wearing only his hoodie and disappeared the evening before Thanksgiving several years ago. He was found in the Manayunk Canal near Philly that January. No one could figure out why he left, where he went, etc.

Sadly, this appears to be yet another male who had just left a bar and then ended up missing, only to be recovered in some body of water. What is it with that scenario? I'm sorry for his family and friends if it is indeed him.

The family of Martin Gutierrez says @Austin_Police called them to come to the scene but they are not telling them anything, including whether or not if the body found in Lady Bird Lake is Martin. The 25-yr-old was last seen Nov 19 leaving Rainey St. Police remain at the scene.

This is heartbreaking. I feel so terrible for his family. His smiling face with those dimples! He’s dearly loved by his family.

Exactly ... what is it with this scenario?? I do not understand it. Reminds me of the Ian Powers case, missing after 49ers game.

In my experience, it cannot be good that APD called his family to the scene. Ugh. So heartbreaking. He has such a beautiful smile!

Oh man. This doesn't sound good. His poor family.

If this is him, I wonder what on earth happened.

Has the person been identified yet? TIA

I just can't figure out what happened. We hang out on Rainey St a fair amount. It's a pretty safe area. Yes, there are homeless folks nearby, yes you can get in some sticky situations, but by and large, that is not the norm. I just can't figure out what happened here. RIP Martin.

Oh no.

I can't imagine they would have called his family to the scene if they weren't almost certain it was him.

Another case of a man leaving a bar that somehow ends up deceased in the water that will probably never be solved.

I’m so surprised LE would call a victim’s family to a scene like that.

Also, did anyone else catch during the brief statement that the blonde PIO officer gave, a reporter asked a question that started with “So you said there is no ID on the body...” I’ll try and find the exact clip.

I thought it was interesting that the officer had seemed to confirm that there had been no ID on the body. It seems unusual that a young man bar hopping in Austin wouldn’t have ID. Could a wallet fall out of a jeans pocket in the water?

SBM to respond to the first part

Reporter Jeff Stensland tweeted regarding that, in addition to expressing how heartbreaking it's been to cover this case. So sad. :(

I want to clarify a couple things. I know this is a heartbreaking story; I've gotten to know this family well and cannot fathom what they're experiencing. I chose this shot because it hid her face. 1/n
Reporting news as it happens is very sensitive. We don't want to alert next of kin by accident; in this case, the community has been searching for Martin, and in a rare move, APD called them to an active scene in a park. This almost NEVER happens. 2/n

Can I post family members’ fb posts? They are saying it was Martin. (Please delete if against the rules.)

Are we sure his family weren't already out there? They've been searching constantly.

And no, unfortunately you can't link a fam member's FB, but if you just search his name, the comments are right there.

I was the first to mention the water and my heart just sank as soon as I noticed. Even when you sadly know the outcome, it doesn't make the reality any less painful.
I am so sad and so hurt but so proud of Martin's friends and family. Their tirelessness, their fierceness, their commitment, their strength. I wish every MPs family was like this and I can only pray that they find some sort of peace and comfort knowing they went above and beyond to find him.
Godspeed, Martin. Fly high.

Rainy, thank you so much for sharing this reporter’s tweets. I truly felt his empathy for the family. Reporters are human beings too and this one was clearly touched by the same heartbreak we all feel for Martin and all those who loved him.
