GUILTY TX - Noted sniper Chris Kyle & Chad Littlefield slain at Erath County gun range

Yes, that's what's being reported. Seems odd to me that therapy for PTSD would involve guns, but hey.

It is though. They can become fearful of many things so there are times they will try to get the person to face their fears so that they can learn to overcome them.

Its such a sad ending to a great hero.

imo

Post number two indicates the pair were killed at the shooting range "while helping a soldier recover from PTSD." Is that correct??

Murky.

No confirmation if the shooter had a PTSD diagnosis.

I did some Facebook/Twitter creeping and it's pretty clear that the shooter has some alcohol issues that were evident in some photos taken while he was in Iraq.

But yes, the word put out by those who were close to Chris Kyle is that he was working with the shooter as part of his charity's works to help vets with PTSD.

Such irony - the world-class distance sniper shot at point-blank range. Still - this having taken the PTSD victim to the gun range as therapy, if that's the case, boggles the mind. One gets the feeling there's more to this story, somehow.

What is tragic is he served four tours in Iraq but it was one of his own fellow Americans that killed him.

This guy was lowly coward because I read they both were shot in the back.:furious:

Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

Kyle and Chad Littlefield, 35, had taken Routh to the range, said Travis Cox, the director of a nonprofit Kyle helped found. Littlefield was Kyle's neighbor and "workout buddy" in Midlothian, Cox told The Associated Press on Sunday morning.

"What I know is Chris and a gentleman - great guy, I knew him well, Chad Littlefield - took a veteran out shooting who was struggling with PTSD to try to assist him, try to help him, try to, you know, give him a helping hand and he turned the gun on both of them, killing them," Cox told AP.

Chad Littlefield was the second victim.

He is survived by his wife and children.

Post-press conference article at WFAA:

STEPHENVILLE — The suspect who killed former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and another man at an Erath County gun range on Saturday used a semi-automatic handgun, investigators said at a Sunday afternoon news conference.

Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant offered a detailed timeline of what happened Saturday at Rough Creek Lodge, a resort located 53 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

At 3:15 p.m., Chris Kyle, Chad Littlefield and Routh enter Rough Creek Lodge and go to a remote shooting range.

At 5 p.m., a hunting guide at the lodge finds the victims, who appear to have been shot and killed. He calls 911 and deputies arrive to confirm the deaths. It is quickly determined that the suspect took Kyle's distinctive black pickup truck, and a bulletin is issued for that vehicle.

Military officials confirmed Sunday that Routh was in the Marines from June 2006 to January 2010. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007.

Haschel said Erath County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a shooting at the Rough Creek Lodge, west of Glen Rose, at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Police found the bodies of Kyle, 38, and Chad Littlefield, 35, at the shooting range. Glen Rose is about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

I don't know too much about bonds--is $3 million a normal bond for murder? Seems really high for this guy who probably wouldn't be able to bond out if it were a half million or something.

I think it is in the standard ranges in Texas for a count of capital murder and two counts of murder (charges expected to change to two counts of capital murder according to the Erath County DA.)

I will not be surprised if his bond is changed to No Bond once he has his arraignment. I expect the prosecutors will make that request of the judge.

STEPHENVILLE -- Retired Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield were shot multiple times at a gun range at Rough Creek Lodge west of Glen Rose, Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said Sunday afternoon.

A semi-automatic handgun found at suspect Eddie Ray Routh's home in Lancaster might have been the weapon used to kill them Saturday, Bryant said.

The U.S. military confirmed Sunday that Routh was a corporal in the Marines from June 2006 to January 2010. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and Haiti in 2010. His current duty status is listed as reserve.

The sheriff said that Kyle and Littlefield had been friends.

"The suspect's mother may have reached out to Kyle to try to help her son," Bryant said.

Texas Rangers interviewed Routh late Saturday, but authorities at the news conference did not release any details.

A hearing is pending for Routh in Erath County, said Erath County District Attorney Alan Nash.

Erath County SO says ballistics testing is not complete but they are reasonably certain the gun recovered at Routh's home is the murder weapon.

Neighbors Offer Very Different Impressions of Slaying Suspect

Danny and Sandra Elizondo, who live across the street and several houses down from Routh's Lancaster home, said they have known Routh for three years. The couple said they had cookouts and attended parades together.

"We knew his mom and dad, and he always waved," Sandra Elizondo said. "We'd be out here, and he'd always say 'Hi.' [We] never any problems with him. He was just a nice guy."

But another neighbor had a different impression.

"He just had that evil persona about him," Carolyn Greathouse said. "He didn't talk to nobody. He gave you a dirty look all the time. He's one of the people you just don't want to hang out with. You want to go your own way."

The shooting death of former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, an advocate for veterans' mental health, has pushed the problem of post-traumatic stress disorder among American troops to the fore.

While the details of Routh's mental health are unclear, up to 20 percent of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from PTSD, according to a 2008 RAND study.

"The symptoms can range from mildly disturbing to wholly incapacitating," said Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, chair of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City and president elect of the American Psychiatric Association, describing the nightmares and flashbacks that can haunt soldiers long after their return to civilian life. "And we're still limited in our understanding of why it occurs, what it consists of and the best approaches to treatment."

Although Kyle was known to take veterans battling PTSD to the shooting range, it's unclear whether Routh suffered from the disorder and whether the activity was intended to expose him to any PSTD triggers, such as gunfire.

It is suppose to be high. He murdered two people. This is a captial murder case and most likely it will wind up being a death penalty case.

I hope he is never able to get out before trial.:furious:

OMG-I have been struggling with this story. My heart goes out to the families involved. What an incredible waste. :(

They keep referring to the fact that Chris was "targeted" by the shooter. So this isn't a "he snapped" thing, PTSD or not.

Sheriff Tommy Bryant of Erath County, said investigators were still sorting out how the three men had known one another and for how long, but the authorities said the Saturday trip was the first time they had been out together at that shooting range. They said they did not know the motive for the killings.

Pentagon records show that Mr. Routh is currently a member of the Marine Reserves. He was an expert marksman and Marine corporal who had earned several medals, including a Marine good-conduct medal. He served in Iraq from September 2007 to March 2008, Pentagon officials said, and was currently listed as “individual ready reserve,” meaning he could be called back to active duty.

Sheriff investigators said Mr. Routh was unemployed and since leaving active military duty had at least one arrest on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

At a book signing in Kerrville, Tx., last year, Bairbre Bible, a local resident, said Mr. Kyle took a break from signing autographs to share a hug and comforting words with her husband, Jerry, a Vietnam veteran still suffering from post-traumatic stress.

“Chris, just in that short meeting was a very strong and compassionate person,” Ms. Bible said. “You felt a warmth and a special energy,” she said.

Jerry Bible, 76, who has difficulty speaking, added: “We shared personal pain.”
