“He’s threatening to kill himself and others,” Jodi Routh said. “He probably needs to go to the VA to the emergency room and they need to admit him to the mental ward.

She said one of her son’s Marine Corps buddies had taken the weapons that were in the house with them for safekeeping.

“They’re all hunting weapons, you know shotguns and rifles,” Jodi Routh said. “He was threatening to you know shoot himself and I just can’t have that. …We were trying to get them out of here without him seeing us take them out.”

Sounds like the gun range is the last place this guy should have been at. At least somebody was smart enough to take the weapons he had at home.

For those asking about exposure therapy. That I'm aware, EMDR is the most well known of this sort of therapy, though some practitioners have been pushing the idea of using virtual reality to treat PTSD vets. Also, that I am aware, there are no exposure therapies that involve loaded weapons.

Here is an interesting piece from the veterans administration wrt PTSD ( pdf link ). And here is a vietnam vet who talks about his experience with exposure therapy ( link ).

Btw, the efficacy of exposure therapy is still hotly debated in the field. Regardless, and again, that I am aware, none of the proscribed methods involve loaded firearms.

Routh’s lead court-appointed attorney, J. Warren St. John of Fort Worth, said he did not know whether Routh remained on suicide watch. He said he had tried to visit him Tuesday but “he didn’t feel like having visitors so we didn’t get to visit with him.”

“There’s no doubt that he has some mental illness that we need to address, but beyond that I’m not really in a position to say anything,” St. John said.

Police are expected to release new details on what evidence they found when the searched Eddie Ray Routh’s home following his arrest for allegedly murdering decorated veteran Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield.

Lancaster police could release that crucial new information sometime Wednesday afternoon, or perhaps Thursday.

An attorney for the Iraq War veteran accused of killing a former Navy SEAL sniper and his friend at a Glen Rose shooting range said Wednesday that he will ask for a court-appointed psychiatrist to examine his client.

R. Shay Isham, who was appointed to represent Eddie Ray Routh, said the psychiatrist's exam is necessary to determine whether Routh is competent to stand trial.

Routh's other court-appointed attorney, Warren St. John of Fort Worth, said Routh was released from the Dallas Veterans Affairs hospital against his family's wishes just two days before the shootings.

"There are just so many mental health issues associated with this case," St. John said.

Bryant said Eddie Ray Routh did take his prescribed medication — once — before refusing to take it again.

“We got his medication yesterday,” Bryant said Wednesday. “He took it yesterday but refused it today. Yesterday was visiting day. He refused to come out and visit with his attorneys and he wouldn’t visit with his family.

Bryant said guards at the Erath County Jail would not force Routh, 25, to take his unidentified prescribed medication or speak with anyone. The sheriff said Routh has not given jailers any other problems since Sunday, when a Taser was used on him and he had to be restrained because he became aggressive.

Although Routh’s family members and some officials have said Routh, who served in Iraq, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, Isham said he has no official knowledge of that, “although I don’t doubt it.”

“Here’s what I know,” Isham said. “I’ve heard the family speak of PTSD, I’ve heard our local county officials speak of PTSD. I know that the Tuesday before the murders, he was with doctors at the VA, and the week before that he was at inpatient treatment at the VA. He was being treated for mental health issues, but whether he had been diagnosed with PTSD, I don’t know that.”

And his mum had his friends remove all the weapons from their house, only to have the victims take him to a shooting range? Someone had a blind spot here and it wasn't his family.

I thought earlier reports stated that his mother was the one who requested Kyle's help with her son. That would seem odd to me to have the guns removed, yet ask for help from someone known for using this type of "therapy."

Well, apparently, there is "gun therapy." Although the gun range seems to me the last place for the guy who just gotten out of a mental hospital.

"Chris Kyle, reputed to be the deadliest sniper in American military history, often took veterans out shooting as a way to ease the trauma of war. Taking aim at a target, he once wrote, would help coax them back into normal, everyday life with a familiar, comforting activity."

Chris Kyle was on BOOKTV talking about his book. Here is the link, the program is about 1 hour. Well worth the watch. Chris is a true hero who wanted to be known for how many lives he saved. He seemed like a really nice guy, so sad.

Family of victim in gun range death defends outing

The man killed alongside a former Navy SEAL sniper at a Texas shooting range was helping his friend work with a troubled war veteran, and the outing was intended to be a "therapeutic situation," his relatives said Friday following his funeral.

Hundreds of people attended the service for Chad Littlefield, who along with his friend, "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle, was fatally shot last weekend. Authorities have said the former Marine they were trying to help suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and turned on the two men at the shooting range.
