So if it was her, and her infractions were 2 traffic violations, would that change anything?

ETA- the cop only told her she was being pulled for failure to signal lane change

All the times I've changed lanes without signalling never did I ever think I would end up dead. This makes me so angry.

It appears he was only going to give her a warning. Went to heck in a hand basket real quick.

I am trying to figure out why this incident is causing so much media attention (even Fox covered this?)

Is there any evidence that she did not commit suicide by hanging? The autopsy will confirm whether or not she died from hanging. The surveillance video will confirm whether or not any one else entered her cell. So what is the big deal? Why the outrage?

From the dash-cam video the officer was very courteous when he first encountered the decedent asking her politely to please put out her cigarette but she automatically started to mouth-off and refused to comply with lawful orders. Had she just complied with the lawful orders of the officer she would be alive today but instead she decided to act in an arrogant and combative way.

Respectfully BBM, technically, since you typed that I guess you didn't end up dead. But I know from personal experience that someone not using signal to change lanes can cause very bad accidents. I have or had a friend die because of just that. jmho

To answer your questions I would recommend you should watch the whole dashcam video that was edited by LE (52 minutes), watch the edited cars go by as the audio keeps playing, watch the cell phone footage, the lack of jail cell footage. Would you be treated like this if you had failed to signal lane change and were smoking in your car? Not trying to be argumentative, but just to trying to answer your question why this is being covered.

I'im sorry about your friend.

I don't mean I drive recklessly or don't bother signalling, but we all make mistakes. I'm not sure what you mean by "I guess you didn't end up dead." What I meant was I have never considered the possibility a minor infraction could lead to me being assaulted and found dead in a jail cell.

Both the cop and the driver were at fault, imo. She was being rude and hostile, right from jump. But he took the bait and amped it up. He should have tried to deescalate it. He did not need to drag her out of the car. I think he should have tried to dial it back a bit.

HOWEVER, I do think she probably hung herself in her cell . Her video on you-tube speaks of her bi-polar depression issues. And not making bond, and being locked up for 3 days could have been a bad trigger. I am sure the family does not want to accept such a tragic situation though.

Who she was and what she did before this also makes it newsworthy.

It wasn't really the infraction that resulted in her death. It was partially her rude, hostile attitude which amped up the situation, needlessly. The cop had an ego and she had an attitude and it got ugly, fast.

Respectfully, I disagree with you, but I think maybe you missed my point.

The "lack of jail cell footage" refers to the fact that the surveillance cameras were only activated by motion detectors. Unless it can be proven that a potential murderer was able to circumvent the motion detectors it is safe to conclude that no one entered the decedents cell and murdered her. What do the autopsy results say? If she died from hanging the autopsy results will be conclusive unless - of course - video surveillance captured someone entering her cell in which case death by ligature must be considered.

I didn't see that in any of the articles I read, can you give me a cite about the motion detectors?

I saw that discussed on Don Lemon's CNN show. He showed the jail footage and an employee said it was motion detected vide

How did Sandra have a plastic bag on her? Isn't everything taken, even belts and shoelaces?

That's how they say she hung herself, with a plastic bag.

About 6:51 a.m., an officer can be seen entering cell 95 for a security check.

At 7:17 a.m., a different male officer can be seen peering into the rectangular window of cell 95, according to the chronology, “checking on Ms. Bland.”

About 30 seconds later, another officer stops at cell 95 and appears to be talking to Bland for several seconds.

There's then a gap in the footage — from 7:18 to 7:24 a.m.

Waller County Dist. Atty. Elton Mathis noted that the video is motion-activated, so, “There's going to be some gaps.”

“At this point, we don't believe there was any editing. These have not been analyzed by the FBI yet,” Mathis said at a Monday news briefing with sheriff's investigators.

From 7:34 to 9:07 a.m., the video shows no movement in or out of cell 95.

Then, about 9:07 a.m., a female officer can be seen checking the window of cell 95 — and running for help. She returns with a male officer, and others soon join them, performing CPR.

Full traffic stop video. It appears at the 1:15 mark that Sandra Bland ran a stop sign and thats why the officer turned around, you see the stop sign as he turns around.. the wishy washy on the video is after SB has been finally detained into another police car.

First, even this 52 minute version is so heavily edited. Note the passing cars that keep vaporizing into thin air. I wonder what they are trying to hide there?

Second, even with dozens of edits, there is still so much blatant racism in this video, that I don't even know where to start. I guess I'll start at the beginning. The first driver obviously a white female didn't even have proof of insurance. Did she get arrested for that? No. Did the white driver's car get impounded for not having insurance? No. He just laughs it off, gave her a warning and told her to get the proof of insurance emailed to her.

Then he stops the black woman, and his whole tone changes, and he decides to arrest her for refusing to put out a cigarette. Jumping to the end of video the radio traffic of the other officer is very interesting. "Show me en route to your location... with one black female in custody." I wonder why she felt compelled to inform them of the race of the woman. Unless maybe they treat black female prisoners different then what they would treat white female prisoners.
