Why are so many babies abandoned in India? Is abortion not an option for the women? With so many orphans, wonder why people are stealing the kids?

Ask and ye shall receive.
http://www.d.umn.edu/~lars1521/India&birthcontrol.htm
As a nation, roughly 50 percent of the population uses some form of birth control.
Of the women who choose voluntarily sterilization, 60 percent wait until they have at least two boys or on average four children .
One major population problem in India is families preferences for boys over girls. Because of India's dowry system, which is now officially outlawed but still takes place, it is expensive to raise girls. Also when a girl marries she becomes part of her husband's family and contributes nothing further to her parents future welfare. One common Indian proverb relates, "raising girls is like watering someone else's lawn
Interesting to note that the rate of female sterilization is 19% and male sterilization is 2%.

And this is an interesting article about abortions in India. http://www.huffingtonpost.in/2017/0...iling-its-women-on-so-many-fronts_a_23063014/

I don't understand why the dowry system makes it 'expensive to raise girls.' ? Doesn't the grooms family pay the dowry fee to the girl's family?

Other way around.

Other way around.

Wow. I had that backwards? The girl's family has to pay the groom????

ETA_ : yup, just looked it up. All my life I was under the impression that the woman was given a dowry, because she was going to bring children to the husband's family. I had no clue she had to bribe the groom's family. lol

Did anyone else see Sherin's story and hear the Richardson Chief (I believe it was the Chief speaking), on Ashley Banfield tonight?
I missed it. The transcript should be available sometime tomorrow. I'll have to remember to look for it.

Hi! Just registered to respond. I grew up in the neighborhood so I can answer questions about the area.

To the person who suggested E. Mockingbird - there is a HUGE police substation there. I can't imagine he'd want to pass that.

I feel like she got dumped in a body of water. Both white rock and lake Ray have large groups of indians/southeast Asians there on the weekends from local churches having celebrations and cookouts. I'm a long distance runner so I'm at both lakes several times a week. White rock is really shallow from almost every point accessible on the lake, with only one spot really deep enough to drive over and dump a body. That is a well traveled road though.

Lake ray has several points that can be driven to with easy and deep spots to quickly dispose of a body. I live currently in Lakewood heights, but my dad and office are in Richardson. At that time of night, the lights are so well timed, I can easily get 15 miles from my dad's house and back in an hour.

I don't think the perp traveled on a major highway. Too many cops looking for drunks. If he went west, you'd be traveling over heavily populated and more traveled areas.

I also think if he traveled west, we'd have photos from the DART rail he'd have to pass.

I also work for a large technology company that rhymes with Lamsung. It's very close by and we employee tons of people. I'm surprised there aren't dozens of camera feeds from houses.

Also, standard floor plan for that type of house has the parents house on the side with backyard and kids rooms facing the front of the house.

Thank You for going to the trouble to register so you can share local info.

The info about the lakes is especially important . Thank you.

I do hope they are getting a lot of surveillance footage to go through to trace his route.

Great first post and :welcome: to WS

Early on there was a neighbor on a news report saying that the police spent a lot of time at his house--checking the garage and freezer. Seemed odd. But perhaps there was some reason to suspect him? I don't think he's an RSO--as the report suggested the family had 3 children. But, a lot of folks don't get caught until they have been engaged in activity for quite some time.

My thought on that was they were checking to see if she somehow accidentally got in there? There was a case a while back where the little boy had gotten into the trunk of a car...

Just seeing this, sorry if repost!

"RICHARDSON -- The disappearance of three-year-old Sherin Mathews is posing plenty of problems for Richardson Police and public, but Dallas-based lawyer Chad Ruback says one thing is a guarantee.

"Mr. Mathews is going to be convicted. Mr. Mathews is going to spend some time in prison for what he did," Ruback told NewsFix Monday. "The only question is how long he's going to be behind bars and what he's convicted of.""

""He has stupidly admitted that he knew there were coyotes out in the area where he left her," Ruback said, referencing the arrest affidavit.

According to Ruback, leaving a child in imminent danger could mean up to 20 years for Wesley Mathews,..."

Snip

""It's going to be tough to find her," Ruback said. "If they haven't found her in the first few days, it's not going to be easy.""

Former Investigator Explains What Could Be Happening In Missing Girl*Case
http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2017/10/16/missing-girl-case/

"In a statement released on Monday, Richardson Police thanked the public for their help but pleaded for patience.

“The police are doing a lot that’s not visible to the public. A lot of it is happening behind the scenes,” said attorney Pete Schulte, a former McKinney police officer.

Schulte said he can understand the public is growing tired.

“You hear about all these stories where we have missing individuals, missing children. They’ll get search teams together. They’ll get people on horseback. You see it all over the country,” said Schulte. “But in this particular case, it’s not happening and that tells me there’s not a necessity for it yet.”"

For those interested in learning more about adoptions and India, I found this article from 2015 to be very interesting.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/indiahom...doption-rates-plummet-50-cent-five-years.html
One thing is that adoption rates have plummeted in recent years, especially for states in the north eastern part of India. Adoptions in the southern tip of India have remained stronger. So that may be why they selected that region for their adoption--to take a child who had very little chance of being adopted.

also

Passports for out-of-country adoptions have made adoptions difficult. In the past, passports had to have a birth certificate, but many orphans have no birth certificate. So now passport officials have been directed to accept the orphanage/adoption agency's indicated date of birth. Which means (IMO) many children adopted may not be the age they are said to be. Interesting.

Thanks for posting, georgiajean. This is interesting. Especially since OH and I had looked into inter-country adoption. Not out of India, but out of Bulgaria, given that my family is from Bulgaria. It's interesting to know how different countries do things.

Who is Ruback to this case? Or is he just passing comment?
