So now we are re-defining the word "hate". It no longer means having a hostility towards others not like you. It now apparently means physically acting out in violence.

Maybe folks would prefer the term "bigotry"?

However you want to define it ... what i mean is disliking someone because they are different. Semantics, I know. It gets confusing for some.

Bringing AK-47s to a gathering with the intent to kill others is far more than being "different".

I did. I made some notes:

"Their passion as mostly confined just to words"

"Protest and counter protest"

"A few clashes, but it never turned physical"

"No major incidents, no arrests"

I saw protesters holding signs that read:
Stand for Jesus
God bless America

That's how to protest. NOT with guns and grenades. NOT by shooting innocent people

Again, I'll ask: who are the haters?

And I'll answer myself: Those who attempt to harm and kill others for their beliefs and speech are the haters. NOT those who use words to disagree with others.

And..

Sharia-law, America Doesn't Want it or Need It
Texans Will Not be Silenced
Go Home and Take Obama With you
Bible & Gun
(with protesters saying these people want to destroy the American way of life, we paid our taxes to that school and I don't want them here)

I wonder if police provided security for this event?

I read somewhere that the event organizers were required to pay an extra $10,000 up front to cover additional security. (The cartoon contest event is what I'm referring to.)

Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders is due to be prosecuted over allegations he incited racial hatred against Moroccans, the authorities say.

In Europe (as in Canada) they don't have freedom of speech. If you voice opposition to Islam or to mass immigration you can be charged with a hate crime and sent to prison. In the UK a politician was arrested for reciting a book written by Winston Churchill (in which Churchill warned about Islamism). The United States is one of the few (if only) countries left in which freedom of speech still exists. It is ridiculous that someone like Geert Wilders would be charged with a hate crime for simply expressing an opinion some might find "offensive". Europe is living under a fascist tyranny.

Cool J....this is for you. Conquest is human nature, as is defending territory.

We do not have unlimited free speech.

Did they shoot anybody?

Did they behead anybody?

Did they burn anybody alive? Throw anyone off a building? Stone anyone?

Compare and contrast the shooting at the draw Mohammed event with the protests at the Stand with Islam event.

Geert Wilders is a poop-stirrer from way back when and he is a hate-monger and a racist.

But other than that, how was the play, Ms. Geller?

ETA: last sentence was a play on the "Mrs. Lincoln" old joke.

I watched the video and the reporter said that there was a "heavy police presence" at the Muslim conference.

Does that mean the organizers of this event put LE at an unnecessary risk because there were people who disliked the event?
The article said: "Because of safety and protest concerns, the organizers asked for extra security."

Other than that, I cannot answer your question. It is possible that things like that are figured into the ultimate cost of the rental of the facility.

Sharia has been mentioned several times in these threads. I was asking a question of those who subscribe to Pamela Geller's beliefs. I perhaps mistakenly assumed that many here would be familiar with her and her blog. She is adamantly worried about Islamic forces taking over our country, and rants about Islamic culture. ad nauseum. She arranged the event in Texas and announced that holy war has arrived. She was probably a bit disappointed that the jihadis were a couple of wannabees. I'm just glad that none of the "art" patrons were injured in her holy war. JMO

Whose holy war?

Who brought the guns? Who shot at and tried to kill innocent people?

OMG. Thank you for letting us know where you stand.

There are few few limits on your freedom of speech or expression. Of course you cannot yell "fire" in a crowded theater or incite a riot. Other than these restrictions it is pretty wide open (look at the Westboro Baptist church).

People have compared Pam Geller to someone shouting "fire" in a theater. The difference is in this instance the theater actually is on fire!

Many MSM sources have also stated that the organizers spent 30k on security.

And they chose a small town in Texas. LOL.

I went to a convention a couple of years ago (at a TN state park) that featured similar speakers and there was no additional security despite the fact the event had been cancelled many times before due to threats.

There was definitely some poop stirring in this case, not that it is a bad thing.

I feel that LE was doing their job by providing security at both events.

In Europe (as in Canada) they don't have freedom of speech.

The part about Canada is patently false. Please don't spread misinformation. Check Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

There are limits to the freedom of speech, both in Canada and the USA, so in neither country are the freedoms absolute.

Moreover, even with freedom of speech, it doesn't mean that there aren't potential consequences for saying certain sorts of things in certain circumstances; this applies to both Canada and the USA as well.

I'm afraid not. A guy in Toronto was sent to prison for 9 months for handing out pamphlets critical of Islam.

Seems there is a bit more to it...

Brazau handed out the flyer, which contained many offensive references to Islam and Muslims, in August and September 2012. While distributing it, Brazau sometimes yelled obscenities about Islam “in a tone of voice that suggested he was very angry and had little interest in debate,” Clements said.

...The flyer also contained a somewhat blurred photograph of a Muslim family on a downtown Toronto street.

The man in the photo testified that Brazau called him a “terrorist” on the day Brazau took the photo.

In a second interaction a few weeks later on a sidewalk, the man, whose name is protected by a publication ban, said that Brazau approached him aggressively while photographing the family, making him “concerned and fearful.”

Clements found this to be criminal harassment.

...Clements declined to ban Brazau from distributing flyers, since that could impede his right to freedom of expression.

I sincerely hope that no one in the U.S. is ever arrested, charged, or convicted for handing out pamphlets critical of anything.

ETA: Just saw time's "more to the story" explanation. Good, so the guy was actually arrested for harassment, and was not banned from distributing pamphlets. Thank you, time.

The theater is on fire because Geller laid out the kerosene and the matches and then basically called out a bunch of unstable, crazier than her, loons to "do what you will".

But what she did is protected by law and so is what I say about her. It's a wash.

Give it time.

The Gellers and Bachmans will make sure their view is the only one allowed. It won't be much longer before we are living under puritanical laws.

Just awful.
