Divers join search for missing Fort Bend County girl
ORCHARD - Volunteers and Fort Bend County sheriff's deputies, including police divers, continued a massive search for a 12-year-old girl who was last seen Friday night.
Searchers on horseback and on all-terrain vehicles combed the roads and fields of the small town while police divers, using sonar detectors, looked through the waters of the nearby Brazos River, Carlson said Tuesday.

The search effort fanned out in all directions for about 10 miles, but searchers found no clues, Carlson said. However, police have received numerous phone calls about the case, and all leads are being checked.

Sonar Image In River Interests Missing Girl's Searchers

Search Of Brazos River's Bottom Has Not Found Anything So Far

HOUSTON -- Crews and volunteers combed the Brazos River for a third day in search of a missing 12-year-old Orchard girl, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

An Amber Alert issued for Teketria Buggs, 12, at 8:13 p.m. Sunday remained in effect Wednesday. Cold weather Monday night and temperatures in the 40s forecasted for Thursday and Friday have searchers concerned about the girl's well-being.

...Texas EquuSearch had a boat in the river by 10 a.m. Wednesday but no divers had been sent into the water. Searchers said as long as it doesn't rain, divers would search the bottom of the river again.

Girl's Stepfather Jailed, Suspected In Her Disappearance

<snip>

The stepfather of a missing Orchard girl has been in the Fort Bend County Jail since Monday and is considered a suspect in the 12-year-old’s disappearance, FortBendNow has learned.

Steven Carrington, 31, who shared a home with Teketria, her mother, and several members of her extended family, was placed under arrest Monday during the investigation into the girl’s disappearance, when it was learned he had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court on an assault charge, a sheriff’s department spokeswoman said.Amber Alert Issued

Investigators have been questioning Carrington, who is a “person of strong interest, and he is now being considered a suspect in the disappearance of Teketria Buggs,” said department spokeswoman Terriann Carlson.

On Monday, a team with EquuSearch, using a boat equipped with a side-screen sonar device, recorded images of what they believe could be a body.
“There were a couple of images there that we have a tremendous amount of interest in,” said Miller.

The spot is less than a mile from the Buggs’ home.

Update per local news. The boyfriend is no longer a POI he is a suspect. It has come to light he may also be connected to a 21 yr. old womans (her last name is Brooks) disappearance on the same property (Orchard, TX) in 1998. Since the announcement tips have been coming in regarding her and the 2 cases are now being worked parallel.

Chief Craig Brady with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's office said, "Information has come to light to cast some suspicion upon the stepfather of the child that's missing. There's definitely not enough at this point to charge anyone with anything."

Still, Carrington was arrested Monday on an unrelated outstanding warrant for family violence. Teketria's mother doesn't want to think about Carrington being labeled the prime suspect in her daughter's disappearance.

Laronald Foy said, "I have no thought about that right now. I would not want to even think, even put my brain to that."

But family members say they've been upset with Carrington for days, because he hasn't been helping, they say, in the search for Teketria.

"You know, everybody else is out there, and I'm asking, 'Where is he?' And someone says, like, he's in the house, he's asleep," recalled Teketria's grandmother Norma Moss. "Like, in the house and asleep and all this activity is going on around him? Why is he not out here?"

Carrington is in custody at the Fort Bend County jail, held on that family violence warrant.

Detectives think Steven Carrington is a suspect not just in the disappearance of Buggs, but also now in the disappearance of 21-year-old Corey Brooks, who vanished in 1998. Carrington and Brooks were reportedly acquaintences.
Brooks' body has never been found. Brooks' mother says he vanished on the very same property in Orchard where Buggs went missing last weekend.

Since Buggs disappeared, investigators say several tips have come in on the Brooks' disappearance. Ft. Bend Chief Deputy Craig Brady now says they're working parallel investigations -- each a missing persons case. Brady says Steven Carrington is a suspect in each.

Family prays for 'Teeky Bug's' return

At the Orchard Volunteer Fire Department, which serves as the command center for volunteers and officials still searching for missing 12-year-old Teketria Buggs, family and friends of the young girl wait patiently for any sign of news that "Teeky Bug," as they call her, is alive and well.

Laronald Foy, Buggs' mother, said there have been no new developments or leads in the search since her daughter disappeared early Saturday morning.

However, Chief Deputy Craig Brady of the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, said Buggs' stepfather, Steven Carrington, 31, has become a suspect in her disappearance.

"(Carrington) has been questioned extensively, but he has said very little," Brady said. "We have reason to believe he has knowledge of the disappearance, even if he was not directly involved in it. But we don't have enough evidence to charge him with anything."

The Texas EquuSearch Mounted Search and Rescue Team in fact did not pull out of the search Wednesday as was previously reported.

"We're doing everything in our power to bring her home," Phillips said. "We haven't found anything yet, but we're hitting every nook and cranny and ruling out places where she's not, so that's good.

"Right now, we have two boats and two jet skis in the (Brazos) River, the horses are still out canvassing the fields, and we've got teams on four-wheelers riding around looking for her."

Foy said she was at her mother's house in Houston at the time of the disappearance because her grandmother had passed away. She believes that as responsible as Buggs is, she would not have left the house without telling someone.

"I know my daughter, and I know that if someone took her, she would have left with someone she trusts with her whole heart," Foy said. "For her to leave the house without even asking her grandmother if she could go, I know it had to be someone she trusts."

Buggs was last seen asleep on the sofa bed next to her 10-year-old sister in her home Friday night. According to Foy, the family's dog did not bark the night Buggs disappeared, which leads her to believe it was not a stranger that might have come into the house.

In addition, Foy said her daughter left behind her purse and cell phone, things she treasures and never leaves the house without.
