"U.S. officials told NBC News the gunman was identified as Ivan Lopez, 34. It wouldn't confirm reports that Lopez was in uniform or that he had taken his own life.

Four of the eight wounded were "extremely grave" condition, according to U.S. military officials.

The Associated Press reported that as many as 14 people were injured, quoting a senior U.S. defense official.

President Barack Obama spoke after the shooting, saying, "We're heartbroken something like this might have happened again."

"FORT HOOD (April 2, 2014) Four people including a gunman are dead and 14 others are injured after a shooting late Wednesday afternoon at Fort Hood, according to several sources.

CBS News identified the gunman as Ivan Lopez.

Fort Hood has confirmed the shooting, but has issued little other information.

"Fort Hood's Directorate of Emergency Services has an initial report that a shooter is dead but this is unconfirmed," the post said in an updated statement at around 6:30 p.m.

The Associated Press quoted a U.S. law enforcement official as saying the suspected gunman is believed to be dead.

At around 6:50 p.m. Scott & White reported it had received three patients.

The hospital &#8220;has activated its internal incident management system and is receiving patients. Hospital staff is preparing to receive and treat victims of this emergency,&#8221; Scott & White said in a brief statement earlier."

"Law enforcement sources said four people were dead, including the gunman, who died of a self-inflicted wound. Officials said several people were wounded, although the exact number was not immediately clear. At one point there were reports that as many as 14 people had been wounded.

Sources told CBS News identified the shoot as 34-year-old soldier Ivan Lopez. A source said the violence apparently stemmed from some sort of soldier dispute. "
