Base Press Conference:

4pm a soldier fired shots at individuals within the 1st medical brigade area...
Lockdown has now been lifted.
Within 15 minutes first responders engaged the shooter and the shooter is dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound.
At this time there is no indication that this incident is related to terrorism, though not ruling anything.
Many LE agencies involved in the investigation which is ongoing.

Confirmed that there are 3 victims who were killed and the shooter was killed.
16 injured being treated at 2 hospitals.

Focus is on the families of the victims to make sure they have the support they need.
Anyone with information please contact LE.

Events in the past have taught us many things, we know the community is resilient.
We know the soldiers who have served so bravely are strong and will get through this.
Thanks to those who have supported us and thanks to the hospital for their excellent medical care.

Do not know a motive.
This soldier had behavior health and mental health issues...
Not releasing his name because next of kin has not been notified.

Served in Iraq in combat.
Currently in the process of being diagnosed with PTSD.

Believed he walked into a unit building, opened fire, got in a vehicle, fired more, then walked into another building and fired again.
Then was engaged by 1st responders.

  • #268
He was using a 45 caliber semi automatic that was purchased recently in the local area.
Not aware of an argument at W2U, there are some initial reports there of an argument in another area.
Arrived in February from another installation, checking the background with that installation.
Any criminal, psychiatric history, experience in combat... all are being checked.

Injuries were some superficial from glasses or escaping, most are gunshot wounds.
Soldier was not in the process of being transitioned out of the military.
His body was found in the parking lot where he was engaged by military police.
Military police officer approached him, about 20 feet. Soldier reached into jacket and pulled out 45 caliber.
Female officer pulled out her weapon and engaged him, he put gun to his head and killed himself.

No indication of terrorism but not ruling it out.
We are checking all of the normal avenues.
Not ruling in or out anything.

Nothing we didn't already know, but I appreciate them keeping us informed. Going to watch Israel Keyes on ID. Nite friends. :loveyou:

Will not say rank or name until family is appropriately notified.
Undergoing treatment for anxiety, depression and variety of other psychological conditions.

The media, however, has already identified him, correct?

Unfortunately... his poor family.

  • #276
Undergoing a diagnosis process to determine if he had PTSD. Not diagnosed with it.
Reports that he self reported a traumatic brain injury but not sure if he was diagnosed.
Was on medication, was not wounded in action, no purple heart according to our records.

Will not say what installation he came from previously but they are contacting him.
That installation is here in Texas (I believe that is what he meant by it's here in Texas.)

All the wounded and killed were military.

If you have a weapon and you are on base it's supposed to be registered on base.
This weapon was not registered on base.

Local FBI is available to them.

We'll have to re-examine all the programs for returning soldiers to see if there are any gaps in them.

Concern about it becoming a target because this has happened multiple times there?
Did you think "oh not again" when it happened?

No, my concern was victims and shooters... establishing what we were dealing with.
Now my concern is with the families or those injured and killed.

You are not allowed to carry concealed weapons on base.
No, he does not believe you should be able to do so.
We have law enforcement, don't believe soldiers should carry weapons on base.

10-15 minutes maximum for the response to this incident, they reacted quickly and swiftly.

Will not debate with the reporter on carrying weapons on a military base.

Shooter was a male, officer that engaged him was a female. :woohoo:
The response was swift and appropriate from a law enforcement and medical perspective.

Last question:

Indication of premeditation?
I do not know, that will be part of the investigation.

Last question:

I will be reviewing all of the procedures...
Appreciate your support, will hold a regular press conference daily until we get all the information out to you.

No time on daily press conference, but will start tomorrow.

Just ask for thoughts and prayers for the fallen and the wounded.

Agree. They are victims also.

:(

Can you imagine finding out your husband did this, from the MEDIA?
It would be awful enough to know he did that, but to have the world know before you?
Totally unfair. :twocents:
