Well apparently those on City Council are not taking this horrific shooting seriously enough. This man is partially, if not totally responsible for the failure of the police to act timely and appropriately under his authority. It is a slap in the face of those who lost loved ones, that this man was sworn in as city council member. It is outrageous.
He was elected by the people. The city can’t arbitrarily decide not to swear him in.

I believe I know the system that the quoted post described. You can ‘unlock’ the door from the outside and go in, leaving the door locked. (Hold it open so the crowd of students can enter, and then slam it closed, and locked.)

OR, you can unlock it from the outside and ‘lock it unlocked,’ so to speak. Then anyone can enter and leave at will. (As a substitute teacher with a trace of right/left/clockwise/counterclockwise confusion, I’d always test the door when I locked up at the end of the day.)
I‘m not sure what kind of door they had, but I do know what a standard outside school door looks like. A key in the door from the outside can open it, but that doesn’t unlock it. To unlock it the crossbar is pushed in and the key is turned to lock the crossbar IN. When the cross bar is OUT the door locks when closed.
As this was the entrance closest to the parking lot this may have been how teachers on that wing came in each day. That morning was an award’s ceremony, so it was reported that a rock was placed to keep the door open so a teacher could get things out of or put back into her car.
She heard the crash and was calling 911. It was reported that she saw him climb over the fence was yelled at by a guy from the funeral home ’He has a gun!” She then kicked the rock and pulled the door closed. You can feel the difference in a door unlocked and locked based on the crossbar. It should have locked when closed If the crossbar was pulled out.

Grandma's horror

Look at the graphic of the school & classroom location. It's different from the one showing he entered near the staff parking lot. It looks like the older part of the school along Old Carrizo Rd. to me.

I wonder why?

Probably because kids these days, especially teenagers, have become so desensitized to violence in general. Whether its on the news, in those God awful video games they play, or even in their own homes (or homes of friends). Look, even his co-workers at Wendy's had nicknamed him "school shooter" - as a joke mind you - see how they even joke about it.

Someone shows me a video of a kid holding a bag of dead, bloodied cats - well I'm doing something. But, again, teenagers, even if they want to do something, think about it, and become afraid that if they do - well that sicko may just come after them.

My question to this video is "who is this FRIEND he was with"? I sure hope the authorities are talking to him extensively. He's just lucky I ain't his family.....................................

JMHO

Fear of reporting him, and the fear LE wouldn't do anything anyways. true!

He was elected by the people. The city can’t arbitrarily decide not to swear him in.
The people can show up in force and demand to negate that vote and elect someone else! It is absurd that there is no action that can be taken. My guess is this man needs to pack up and move, he has no future in Texas, much less Uvalde! Everyone knows his face and name and what he did. It was not a judgement call, it was inaction for 77 min. He needs to turn in his badge and gun forever!

Thanks for the info- appreciated- but I hope after he is interviewed by the DOJ and if they find him partly culpable for the abysmal failure of the police officers, that he will no longer be on the City Council, nor should he have any position on the police force.

Agreed fully; it's like a fire raging in a building where you have minutes, if not seconds to rescue the people inside.
Except this was worse, an act of purposeful murder.

There was no reason to wait more than an hour to go in and rescue the wounded.
Children whose lives might have been saved died, because they bled out.
There is no excuse.

Oh well...
A pinch (or maybe a kilo!) of salt is needed when reading all of these reports.

On the other hand,
It seems, SR didn't have much time to write this message to the German girl, as he ran from the house immediately after shooting his grandma
If teachers

If teachers or the lunch lady feel comfortable being armed, but many do not.
I'd prefer guns weren't sold to 18-year-olds with sealed juvie records, but if the law cannot be changed or the age raised to at least 21 then schools will have to become locked down tight with armed security guards. But that includes all shopping malls, grocery stores, everywhere.
Literally, no place is safe.
Those 19 officers were not watching children get shot and in a life or death situation. They were hiding behind a door. I am confident that the women who put their bodies between children and an armed shooter, and died doing that, can brandish a gun if needed!

@ValerioCNN

@CNN Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief, Pedro Arredondo, tells CNN exclusively he’s in touch daily w TX Dept of Public Safety. When asked about reports he wasn’t cooperating, he told @aaroncooperNYC
“I am in contact with DPS everyday”

@OmarJimenez
Arredondo did not go into any further details with CNN’s Aaron Cooper about what “contact” means, but this is in direct contrast to what Texas DPS has said, that he has not responded to their requests for a follow up interview in days.
He is in contact because he has officers guarding his home, the community is livid and he is not safe in Uvalde.

His inaction is so appalling it brings me to tears thinking of those children (and teachers), some of whom may have been able to be saved had those officers gone in sooner. And it gets worse, when the border police officers arrived they were told to wait- which they did for a bit , until finally they just finally stormed in the room and took out the shooter--

It is kind of like a woman who goes to the police because her boyfriend abuses her and the police tell her there is nothing we can do until he actually does something to you!!! that is my very favorite. How many women have died because of that advice from the police? Does the seem thing apply in cases like this- a family member goes to the police and says my son is exhibiting this or that unusual or scary behavior- what would the police tell her? we can't do anything unless he does something (like kill 10 people?)-- I don't know, just asking.

A little boy reported that an officer yelled for the kids inside the room to yell out for help. A child near him who had been playing dead yelled back at the officer, and the shooter shot the child dead. Exactly what did officers expect? The kids are taught to lay still and be quiet, how dare they put them in danger by assuming all of them were dead, yelling to them, and waiting 77 min! I am so livid I cannot contain myself!
How many officers does it take? District police, City police, US Border Patrol, Tx DPS, and the Sheriffs were there? I’d like to make the officer who opened the door and shot the guy our Attorney General, it seems the rest were cowards.

Did he offer any condolences to the victim's families> Did he attend any funerals? Or is he only thinking about his own career and well-being yet again?

If I remember correctly, Buffalo shooter also brutally killed a cat and his mother knew (even gave him a box to bury rhe poor animal).

Everything starts at home.
Sad !
Again with the red flags that were missed or ignored.
SR showed fairly early on that he was disturbed.
Actions could have been taken to get him help -- while he was still a minor, if I'm correct ?

I can't look at the video of SR and his pal, with the slaughtered cats. :(
We have a rescue cat who initially had aggression issues, but after a few months of patience trusts us completely.
My heart would break if someone were to harm him !

Just who is this friend of SR's, anyway ?
Hopefully they're not of like mind; but it's concerning that they didn't go to the authorities.
My opinion.

Oh, I wasn’t suggesting concealed carry on campus be banned. I just don’t see arming teachers as being a key measure to increase school safety. I would like to see other security measures, such as one entrance, exterior fire doors that open outward only, no exterior handle, metal detectors, trained security officers.

But I am hearing that those measures are not proven to improve safety in schools. They will also cost billions in tax dollars, most of which would get passed on to the local communities. And it will get lost in red tape, mismanagement, and take years to be implemented.

No matter what we do, someone loses. Or we do what we have done each time there’s a school shooting. Nothing.

I predict the losers will once again be our children.
My guess is something better change by August, who in their right mind would go into teaching at any grade level if schools cannot be made safe.
I support arming teachers who are trained, there are already many districts in Texas with teachers who are armed. Those are not the ones where shooters go. They go to soft targets. The guard at Parkland stayed outside. The guard at Uvalde was not on campus.
If a teacher wants to arm themselves, I would not stand in their way- they are on the front lines and nothing in that classroom can protect them from a gunman armed with two AR15s and over 300 rounds ready to go.

Teachers or school staff who volunteer to conceal carry at school can take the same kind of tests that LE does. They can take firearm training courses like LE does.

Since these school shootings are rare most teachers would spend their entire career teaching without ever having to touch their concealed carry weapon while at school.

I also agreed with you that having an armed LE officer on campus was a good idea.

I still think that keeping these miscreants outside of schools in the first place makes much more sense then having armed school staff. JMO.
It actually isn’t a new proopsal there have been armed teachers in schools in Texas for many years. Some districts are very rural and are not even close to a police department, they train and arm teachers. What could happen now, is an expansion of the School Marshal system, or in Florida they are School Guardians. Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County has a video explaining how it works.
