Update:

Friday 25 October 18:07

Statement from Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills:

“This is a fast-moving investigation involving significant police resources dedicated to finding out the truth about what happened to the 39 people found dead in the lorry on Wednesday.

“I’d like to start by addressing the amount of speculation in the media and on social media surrounding our investigation.

“We owe it to those who have died to get this investigation right and speculation is not helpful. It may in fact hinder our investigation and its progress.

“The force will not be commenting on any speculation about the nationalities of those who have tragically lost their lives.

“I strongly urge journalists and people on social media not to speculate about the identities of those involved or the circumstances surrounding this investigation.

“We gave an initial steer on Thursday on nationality however this is now a developing picture. As such I will not be drawn on any further detail until formal identification processes approved by Her Majesty’s Coroner have taken place.

“I can confirm we have officers working around the clock and we have now arrested a fourth person.

“A 48 year-old man from Northern Ireland was arrested at Stansted Airport earlier today on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and on suspicion of manslaughter.

“It follows the arrests of a 38 year-old man and a 38 year-old woman from Warrington during warrants executed in Cheshire overnight. They are currently in custody also on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and on suspicion of manslaughter.

“A 25 year-old man arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of murder remains in custody.

“We are working closely with the National Crime Agency, the Home Office, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Border Force and Immigration Enforcement.

“We have begun the process of transporting the victims from the Port of Tilbury to the mortuary at Broomfield Hospital. Formal identification processes will take place as well as the examinations to establish the causes of their deaths.

“This process is likely to be a lengthy one, but it is crucial, and we’re working with Her Majesty’s Coroner to ensure the dignity of the victims and the respect for their loved ones is at the forefront of our investigation.

“I’m acutely aware of the international interest in this case and the appetite for information.

“We will provide more updates as and when we can.

“The scene at the Waterglade Industrial Estate in Eastern Avenue has now been closed. I would like to reiterate my thanks to every person and business who has been impacted by the work we have been carrying out there since Wednesday morning.

“Finally I would like to speak directly to anyone who thinks their loved ones may have been in the trailer. I know you may be worried about speaking to the police. I would like to reassure you that we just want to be able to give the victims’ families answers about what has happened. I can’t begin to comprehend what some of you must be going through right now. You have my assurance that Essex Police will be working tirelessly to understand the whole picture to this absolute tragedy.

“I would also like to make an appeal to anyone living illegally in this country, who could help our investigation. Please come forward and speak to us without fear. I can assure you that your information will be received in strictest confidence and no criminal action will be taken against you.

“If you do not feel able to speak to police directly, please contact Crimestoppers 100% anonymously on 0800 555 111.“

Murder investigation launched after 39 people found dead in lorry container | Essex Police
A refrigerated truck with Asian illegal immigrants, being transported and all deceased, (over three dozen), in this case:
I would strongly investigate illegal organ harvesting...
Refrigeration would be keep bodies at optimal temperature for this; if refrigeration was turned on...
One of the major reasons for human trafficking is illegal organ harvesting;
Huge profit for this activity...

This is a good point by l don't think it's the case here. They suffocated. There were signs of rigor mortis in some of them. The refrigeration wasn't turned on.

Lorry deaths: GPS data shows container visited trafficking hotspot

The container in which 39 migrants died stopped down a dirt track in Essex known locally as a notorious people trafficking hotspot.

Data from GPS tracking of the refrigerated container seen by The Times shows that it had made a nearly identical trip the week before the victims were found inside it in the early hours of Wednesday last week. It is not known who was driving the truck on the first journey.

The new evidence adds weight to the notion that the victims — who Essex police now believe were all from Vietnam — were brought into the UK as part of an experienced, sophisticated operation.

Leased on October 15 in Monaghan, Ireland, on its outbound journey it made short stops at a B&Q in Gillingham, Kent, and a distribution centre for Morrisons, the supermarket. The unit returned from Zeebrugge and was driven about 20 minutes from Purfleet to Orsett in Essex, making a five-minute stop down the private track at 6.50am on October 18.

Detectives have seized CCTV footage from Orsett golf club beside the track, which leads to a pig farm.

The data also appears to show that on its return the container stopped at D&J Exports, a transport yard.

A neighbour who lives near the golf club, which backs onto the yard near Tilbury Docks, had reported alleged people-smuggling to police three weeks ago. “Three weeks ago, on October 11, I saw 15 to 20 migrants jump out of a lorry and get into four Mercedes cars,” the neighbour said.

“We went to get the number plate on the lorry but it was covered. I rang up the police and reported it immediately but they haven’t been in touch.

“There was also a man who was built like a rugby player who was in a Mercedes SUV. I saw the same man about a week later — he had a man up by his throat and was shouting at him in a foreign language.

“The only word in English he was saying was ‘import’.”

The Times went to several locations on the GPS readout which the police had not yet visited.

The container was leased by Ronan Hughes, 40, on October 15. It travelled to Lurgan, Co Armagh, before going south to Dublin and crossing the Irish sea to Holyhead in north Wales.

Mr Hughes and his brother Christopher are wanted. He is understood to have spoken to officers by phone twice.

The container stopped at the rear of a traveller site in Thamesmead, southeast London, beside a scrap yard called Concorde Metals, for 35 minutes before leaving at 8.51am on Saturday, October 16. It then stopped at a Morrisons distribution centre in Swale, Kent, for 24 minutes, leaving at 12.40pm.

Before leaving Dover at about 6.30pm, the container stopped at a B&Q hardware store for 24 minutes.

It stopped twice in northern France on the Belgian border before spending an hour down a dead-end street near a water treatment plant in Komen-Waasten, Belgium. In both its Belgian journeys it stopped in Lissewege, near Zeebrugge, before the return leg.

The stop near Orsett golf club now forms a key part of the investigation. Richard Herring, general manager at the golf club, said: “We have had some trouble in this area years ago but nothing like this — hopefully our CCTV can help the investigation.”

Peter Hyams, the owner of D&J Exports, said: “We have no record of it being here. We’ve checked our CCTV but can’t see anything. We’d be happy to hand it to police but they’ve not visited us.”

Is there any wonder why the Hughes brothers are reluctant to hand themselves in? They have likely already had same threats! Above Hughes in the chain are the heavy people. They will not want the attention....at all costs. Ireland have turned a blind eye to this for years! Occasional raid just to tidy things up. However despite the raid earlier this year and large quantity of cash being found etc they still didn’t arrest a soul! Think that speaks volumes imo!

Info on a ‘GIM’:

A Garda Information Message, known as a GIM form, is an official garda document in which officers give formal notice that they are aware of a possible threat on a target's life or safety.

Am i understanding correctly that the Garda have informed a person of interest in the investigation that their own life is in danger?

Are we allowed to speculate which of the named POIs it may be?

  • #311
The trailer company gave information right off the bat. Their name was seen by thousands on that trailer. Bad press. They immediately gave statement that they didn’t know and gave all info over to the police.

There is chinese whispers that the family name of those who own trailer company has strong links to smuggling into Ireland for many years.
It’s not Chinese whispers, is there plain as day online for all to see. Research it...

Probably the same person the press reported a week ago as being in protective custody for their own safety.

The one who has not been named? Makes sense.

I thought it was EH who was in protective custody?
I would have speculated it was EH. If they still cant track the brothers down, Im not sure how they could have been served.

  • #315
I think the GIM is referring to EH also

Any ideas why there is a threat to life? Could it be they are talking to the police? I can't think of anything else.

It is not unusual that these get issued tbf. Some well known Irish underworld figures have had few along with British underworld etc who have had British equivalent. TR had a good fair few warnings before his social media ban. They usually become aware through intelligence update or can be through phone taps, covert listening devices

Meanwhile, in unconnected but related news.. Is it actually cheaper to sleaze into the US, than it is the UK?! imo.

This case has brought Irish Law Enforcement right into the spotlight, bringing unwelcomed attention. No lessons have been learnt. The Irish CAB will shake down minor players but leave the big men well alone. They get raided as numerous newspaper articles prove, yet nothing is seized. They keep homes, cars, hotels, equestrian centres, racehorses...
The case of woman journalist brutally killed at road junction by men on a motorbike and the man who ordered her killing didn’t not loose his home and wealth despite not earning a bean for more than 10 years!
