He told ITV News: "I asked them if you find it very difficult to contact the police, could you please pass [on details of] your relatives and friends in the container, their identities.

"They gave me the names and all the pictures and all the marks on the body."

Yeah its still connected somewhat. U would think it would be so much easier to say yes we investigated there was nothing dodgy to lead us to believe this would happen. Not no comment...move on nothing to see here!
Chances are they checked when they pulled them over. Walked round the trucks and trailers looking for any defects. They would’ve checked their paperwork and taken a print off the digicard machine to check driver hours maybe even dipped their fuel tanks. Number of checks taken.

Because they are bound by GPDR and it wouldnt be normal practice for outside agencies to comment on ongoing/related enquiries.

I personally think their "no comment" is pretty standard and not much to be read into it. They were just unlucky that in todays world of camera phones someone filmed it and shared it on SM. JMO

Right but still seems odd that it wasn’t investigated.

I would have thought if the lorry didn't stop to be searched , that VOSA would have the powers to investigate the owner further. Not stopping indicates you have something to hide . To simply let lorry go seems highly unlikely , what would be the point in such checkpoints if it was at the drivers discrection whether to stop or not

V likely of their own accord. V likely they believed the traffickers who no doubt assured them it was tried, tested and safe
Hi, new here but fascinated and appalled by this tragedy at the same time. The evidence suggests these people got into the truck without force and they paid a large sum of money to do this! What they were offered the other end however was likely never going to happen eg large salary and a better life but they were targeted and lied to!

Hi Egfo and welcome to WS. Appalling sums it up perfectly :(

It has been reported that this ‘group’ were being investigated for over 12 months. During that time custom checks in ports and stops by VOSA would of happened. Other types of intelligence would of been being gathered company accounts, bank accounts, phone records, social media monitoring, employees etc.

Important part of investigation is confirming when and which employee’s were involved in the movements of trucks and trailers during those fateful days leading upto the trailer in Essex. I would also throw yard stick at what contact EH had with possible conspirators following dropping the trailer in at Zebrugge. Another fact is ‘they’ clearly knew EH had dropped that trailer, yet he managed to squeeze on the Cherbourg to Dublin crossing with ease! Unbelievable gaff! There are other possible employees who actually were tagged on MR social media of being with him in foreign port area’s yet have still not been picked up!

Now the Huges brothers are out in the wind why have they not thrown the net out? Dragged others in? They have conspired too I’d of thought...knowingly or otherwise? They drive top spec trucks, drive flash cars, designer clothes and are young in their 20’s. Something very whiffy is going on

The Cherbourg to Dublin trip doesn’t surprise me. I travelled Belfast to Cairnryan last week and was taken aback by absolutely no security checks at all. No posters of the Hughes brothers up. Wasn’t asked for any form of Id for me, OH or our kids and to top this off, the boat was full of passengers and staff in full Halloween get up - so literally anyone could have been getting on or off that boat in a mask, wig, make-up. There were dozens of Scania trucks on board and a lounge for the drivers. I HOPE there is at least some sort of security checks for them!

TV producer, David Modell, tells @BenFryer @sonwatson he was shocked at how easy it was to smuggle people into the country for a new @Channel4 programme to air tonight. #Smuggled

Mr Modell has rejected criticism from the @ukhomeoffice about airing the programme in the wake of the 39 deaths in #Grays, saying they are showing what shouldn’t happen when it comes to border security.

4 November 2019:

The deaths of 39 Vietnamese people in the back of a lorry in Essex should act as a "wake-up call for the government" over its migration policy, MPs say.

A report from the Foreign Affairs Select Committee says the UK's policy of closing borders drives migrants into smugglers' hands.

Committee chair and Tory MP Tom Tugendhat said the UK should "lead by example" on the issue.

The government said tackling human trafficking is a "major priority".

JMO obviously but I had assumed authorities had ALLOWED EH to board the ferry so they could arrest him once it docked. They had already identified the tractor unit (wasn't it caught on camera ten times at Zeebrugge?) and I should imagine it's much easier to nab someone getting off a ferry in their own country rather than chasing them across the continent.

Totally agree with you Stella, it's quite terrifying to think that no real checks are carried out on those travelling by ferry. We have all the security at airports and then nothing if you travel by sea. Crazy

The committee report said that the human cost of so-called “irregular” migration made international partnerships, including with the EU, essential. Tom Tugendhat, the committee chairman, said: “Today hundreds of families across the world are losing loved ones who felt driven to take the fatal gamble to entrust their lives to smugglers.

“This case should serve as a wake-up call to the Foreign Office and to government. The UK has been relatively isolated from the different migrant crises in recent years but it’s wrong to assume that we are protected from their impact. The UK has a proud history of helping those fleeing conflict and persecution and co-operating with others to protect human rights. We should lead by example.”

They wouldn’t need to chase EH across the continent. Swings and roundabouts. Pick him up in Cherbourg or Dublin? Both require same amount of effort and paperwork. Suppose it was a safer arrest in Ireland as he had a reason to arrest him anyway. The boats do offer HGV driver lounges away from normal travelling passengers on longer sailings that is normal.

"We tell them it's very dangerous."

Vietnamese priest Father Simon Thang Duc Nguyen says he discourages families from risking their lives to be smuggled into the UK.

It comes after 39 bodies were found in a lorry in Grays.

The Reverend Simon Nguyen, who led the service, said the 39 died "seeking freedom, dignity and happiness".

At Mass on at the same church on Sunday Bishop Nicholas Hudson also asked for prayers for traffickers.
