5 November 2019:

Channel 4 has defended its decision to air new reality series Smuggled just 11 days after 39 people were found dead in a lorry in Essex.

The experimental show, which sees eight British citizens attempt to enter the UK by evading border checks, launched on Monday 4 November after being postponed for one week.

Despite the broadcast delay, the Home Office has said Channel 4 was “insensitive and irresponsible” to show the series so soon after the victims were discovered in a refrigerated lorry trailer on an industrial estate on 23 October.

However, Channel 4 has said the series is “a matter of urgent public interest”.

More:

A spokeswoman for the Home Office told the BBC: “Broadcasting this programme so soon after the tragic incident at Grays is both insensitive and irresponsible.”

She added: “Organised crime gangs have no respect for human life so it is reckless to provide a platform for the illegal activity that they facilitate.

“Doing so can encourage them to exploit our border for profit, risking the lives of vulnerable, desperate people as they do so.”

I had to double-check the dates in this case, I cant believe it has been only 11 days, feels an awful lot longer.

Does the Magnitsky Act apply in Ireland? How much are these lorries worth?

Depends if they are owned or on HP or leased? Worth over £17k at least! Depends on the mileage, spec, reg & engine size.
If they are owned, who owns them? How were monies exchanged? Who signed purchase, HP or lease documents

Any news about the drivers? Were they also arrested or detained? If these trucks were seized that brings the count to 5 with only 2 drivers in custody? The Hughes brothers are still in the wind. Surely more drivers need detaining. These trucks don’t drive themselves and Hughes brothers were not always driving allegedly. R Hughes distinctive blue bullnose Scania where is that? This is very sloppy from Irish police and CAB. They will know where they are and taking them is easy....what is the delay

Trying to find out exactly how many lorry's they actually have in total, can't find details of operators licence as that would give us a good clue on how many trucks and trailers they can operate, think I'm missing the exact name and address the two companies are using at present!!!!
