No idea, and yes it now seems to be that way
He definitely can, and probably has already.
Yes, something tells me he is voluntarily missing. They've done the river search just as a precaution but I think it's mostly leaning towards that. Sonning as an out of the blue night-time destination with suitcase, doesn't seem to me to be coincidence, and money in the family probably means connections and things like spare boats.

Police searching for Mr Stern found a body in the river in nearby Charvil on Friday.
Although formal identification has not yet taken place, detectives believe it to be that of missing Mr Stern.

It's so mysterious to me how he could have fallen in the river, while pulling a suitcase around, and why he even had a suitcase with him. I wonder if the inquest will produce any answers.

I think now it's back to the initial thoughts, way before the certainty with the boathouse idea.

I don't notice a rucksack when Alexander is seen leaving the pub on the CCTV camera.. yes, the suitcase, but no noticeable signs of the rucksack.
Yet a few days later it's found on Sonning Bridge I assume.. was it planted there? Why wasn't this information released? It's a new lead certainly?
I'm hesitant to point towards the rucksack being planted, because that wouldn't account to the fact that that it was swollen and flooded.

What we do know:
- Alexander is last seen at the Bull Inn in Sonning on the evening of 11 January at around 19:30.
Now, there's 'eyewitnesses', so more than one, claiming to have seen him carrying a rucksack when he leaves the pub.
However, there is no time stamp given on the time 'Alexander' is seen on camera wheeling a suitcase suspected to be going towards Sonning Bridge.
"Mr Stern, who according to reports is the son of stationery businessman and Ferrari collector Ronald Stern, was last seen at the pub at about 19:30 GMT."

He was seen at about 19:30 GMT at the pub. He's seen by a few others carrying a rucksack when he leaves the pub again at around 7:30pm.
Do the times add up? The last time he was seen was at around 7:30pm in the pub. Seems to me, he left in the 7:30pm time frame.
The eyewitnesses who claim to have seen 'Alexander' carrying a rucksack towards Sonning bridge, I believe is incorrect. I do not think that person was Alexander.
Regardless, this has completely nothing to do with the CCTV that captured 'him' leaving with the suitcase as there is no time stamp given. If that information is released, then that makes it easier to come to a conclusion. With that said, it could be the other way round, maybe the person the eyewitnesses claim to be Alexander carrying the rucksack could very well be him, but then again, the person wheeling the suitcase as shown on the camera may not be him.

If that's the case, then there are a two scenarios in line to that:
1- He is killed when he first goes with the rucksack, in this case the eyewitnesses who claimed to have seen him would be correct. If this is the case, then the person seen on the cctv camera wheeling the suitcase cannot be Alexander. Someone impersonating him to cover up tracks?
2- Alexander himself goes back and forth. First time round he goes with the rucksack, then comes back and take the suitcase. If this is the case, then the cctv camera and the eyewitnesses statements are both correct. This is now a question of why however, why not go at once with both items? Was he killed after taking the suitcase to whoever it may of been? The rucksacks contents dumped/taken by the possible perpetrator/s and then left on the Bridge to make it appear that it wasn't a mugging gone wrong?
Other scenarios:
3- Entirely off grid - suicide? Doesn't equate to the suitcase and rucksack however, but best to keep an open mind.
4- Meeting someone on the boathouse to exchange 'items'? First time round with the rucksack perhaps? Goes wrong, said items are not in the rucksack? Fight happens? He's killed then and there?
5- Renting/owes a boathouse? Unexpected visitor/ expected visitor? Struggle then he's thrown overboard? Must be more than one person though. Or perhaps was expecting visitors?
6- He was initially running away from someone. Suitcase and rucksack would come in line and make sense in regards to this. Stops off at the pub for a quick drink, the time he's seen in the pub, and the time he's seen en route to Sonning bridge would make this a plausible theory.
7- He was planning to lay low. Staying over at a hotel or a boathouse, the suitcase would make this plausible again. Laying low because he's dumped the rucksack on the bridge for whoever he had a need to go missing from. He then goes back to the pub this time with the suitcase after dumping the rucksack and goes on his way.
An altercation happens on his way to hotel or boathouse? He's not done what was said in regards to the rucksack being placed on the bridge? Don't want to reinstate points again, but this comes in line with point (4)

I think I've just seen what you might be seeing on the cctv.
I guess you're seeing him standing still, back to camera, suitcase being dragged in his left hand, left knee bent more than his right, approaching Thames Street square on?
What I'm seeing is him walking on the pavement of Thames Street in the same direction as the car behind him, suitcase being dragged by his right hand, and his right knee more bent, left arm swinging forwards.
I think it's an optical illusion. Which of us is right?
I think you're correct b/c I see the white of his face as he walks in the same direction of the car.
ETA: but as I read further I see that it doesn't matter much now that he's been found dead
