UK UK - Alice Byrne, 28, last seen around 2am after beach party, Portobello, Edinburgh, 1 Jan 2022

This may seem silly, but 2 am after a beach party, where might a girl step aside to use the facilities if she could not hold on till arriving wherever she may have been heading ? speculation, imo,

Both her home & the party flat are a couple of minutes away from the beach.

My ''hope'' if that is what the case has been reduced to - is that she stepped behind something, felt sick, lay down, passed out and succumbed to hypothermia.

Assuming that if she entered the water a body would resurface by now?
Then what??

  • #183
It is indeed usually the case that if anyone enters the water & doesn't make it out again they usually show up by now along the coast or on the other side in Fife. But the Firth of Forth is tidal and eventually meets the North Sea.

If a body is missed when it resurfaces after a couple of days it could unfortunately be lost forever when it sank down again.

Saying that, the water is heavily used (many boats) and watched for marine mammals.

The latest known sighting of her was between 08:00 and 10:00 leaving a friend’s flat on Marlborough St, not 2am as previously reported.

Yes, and the distance from the doors of the houses (as opposed to the blocks of tenement flats) to the street is close enough that any Ring cameras would potentially pick up a clear image of those passing by. I would be stunned if nobody had cameras.

The area of the beach at the foot of the street is also likely to have been the busier part of the promenade. Busier by 8am standards anyway. The area between Bellfield Street and Figgate Lane is where most people tend to gather with the busiest area being the foot of Bath St.

There is a lane that runs off Marlborough Street as well which goes to Regent St.

Dropped pin
Google Maps

""Yes, and the distance from the doors of the houses to the street is close enough that any Ring cameras would potentially pick up a clear image of those passing by.""

Agree. And any potential street cameras at the beach entrance or the other way (if she didn't head to beach) and headed to the intersection of Marlborough St and Portobello High Street.

I attached two more photos:

1- The intersection at top of Marlborough Street. As you can see, the density of stores, if she walked that way (maybe deciding to go home) and potential cameras. Even at the intersection, there is a store called ACORN and there is a camera. (See Second Photo)

So I will guess this town is filled with them...

Yes I know they also need to have been working, even still...

If my son or daughter were missing, unexpectedly without rhyme or reason I would also be throwing in ‘vulnerable’ to make the situation more vital to find them. Just my opinion!

I feel MSM has went a bit cold on this and I live in a Edinburgh, no new info so nothing to report. It’s sad.

Good research! So for my money, it's starting to look as though there would certainly be CCTV images of Alice if she had walked any distance along that road in either direction, and I find it hard to believe that the police wouldn't have released one or more of those as a memory jogger, as well as being able to confirm for sure what direction she went in.

What that makes me think, then, is that the sighting of her on Marlborough Street was from a witness, and furthermore a witness who didn't know which way she went - in other words, a witness who either saw her only fleetingly (say, from a vehicle) or who only saw her leave from inside the flat.

If she was not caught on any CCTV at all then imo it's high time the police started asking to search premises along Marlborough Street.

Do we know who sighted her at this time? Was it someone independent of the friends at the flat? Do we only have the word of said friend that she left? I don’t recall reading there was an cctv or anything. Moo

You are correct.

And seemingly no CCTV to see her arrive either. Therefore appears to be only the word of one or more persons at the house.

True, and if she had a bus pass they would have found a record of it being used.

The Lothian buses CCTV is brilliant and has been used in loads of criminal cases. If she was on one they would have spotted her. No doubt about that.

If she made arrangements to go somewhere by car she would’ve had to do it using someone else’s phone, or go with someone who was at that same party. Alternatively, she could have taken a lift from a stranger outside but that seems unlikely, although not impossible.

If she had no money or phone, I highly doubt she would have had any bus pass on her. And she of course wouldn't have needed one, as she lived within a few minutes walk and was seemingly not planning on going further afield than a half mile or so radius.

I really hope some information comes out soon that could help find her. This is crazy.

That's the problem for me. No information from police.

There are camera's on at least 6 more houses from google earth down that street entire street.

What apartment?
Why isn't anymore speaking up on social media? Aside from her FB and a few instagram friends.
Did she leave with someone?
What state was she in?

Someone isn't talking - that's my gut and opinion obviously.
Maybe there were drugs at the party and no one wants to get in trouble??

And another question I have is does she have a boyfriend or significant other?

I feel like no news isn't good news in this situation

Her fb profile says she has a bf, yes.

Ok. Thanks for answering that. Going to assume he's been interviewed and cleared.

I have been in this forum for about 6 months - not sure I will ever get used to someone walking out in the morning and literally vanishing into thin air...

This is The Edinburgh Evening News broadcast that I found only on FB.
Sorry if this is reposted. They interviewed some locals.

This is the only broadcast I found...

Can you help find Alice Byrne?

The police here wouldn’t make a big deal if there were drugs at the party. Some people I knew had a wild cocaine party and there was a sexual assault in the bedroom. When the police arrived they told everyone they didn’t care if everyone was taking drugs they were only there to investigate the assault. The police know what to prioritise.

The family said they are happy with the police investigation. It’s not relevant to name her friends at present. I’m sure they’re distressed enough.

Exactly, Alice did not simply disappear, something has happened.
