Just thoughts.
Every description of Andrew Gosden is too perfect. Gifted kid, reading at 3, 100% school attendance, gifted program at school, no trouble at home, never upset, likes to turn water into wine on his weekends.
If you asked my parents about me they would say I was a good son, no major issues, loved his family, did his best at school he could.
If you asked me about my parents I would say they were never around, never came to any of my sports days, never really cared if I studied or not, completely missed me being socially challenged, seemed to think they could just spend money on my needs and that qualified as good parenting.
So point being while the Gosden's might see Andrew one way, Andrew may have seen them another. All this high achieving may be because they gave him no other avenues other than to be a kid who liked to stay home etc.
EDIT :
I mean, a whole genre of movies have been created on teens with parents who don't understand their issues. I doubt the Gosden's know their 14yo inside out.
