And the comments about Lewes being a crime hotspot are way off. Most are very low level crime.

Not sure if this photo has been shared from the lewes present site- but it was taken the evening of the 20th and shows the footpath to Tesco’s (and the clock tower in the background). Apologies if already posted, but I have seen other photos but not this one.

I'm very glad this photo is posted. I saw it in thread #1 and got a totally different perspective on the flooding during the night he went missing. Still not sure/convinced he was near the river, let alone has fallen into the river...but I see that it's potentially far more dangerous then I first thought. I guess the path is also slippery too, because IIRR (if I recall right) it was raining "cats and dogs".

There is no proper footpath the other side of the river. Surely CCTV would have picked him up if he had gone from market street to the causeway?

So, my other thought is Waitrose. As mentioned earlier- could he of gone there for cigarettes or whatever he left the pub for? I know this is not directly next to the river, but it is close. Also the car park behind waitrose. He may have looked for a quiet place for the loo. The water level at the back of that car park would have been very high. But again, how would he have got there without being picked up on CCTV? East street? He had already walked past this road as he walked up towards and past the flea market. That's the strange thing, no more CCTV sightings??

There are posts on the Lewes page from the 20th December (before anyone knew about AK) asking about the flooding, as they had a flood warning issued and needed to get to Tesco’s. The rain didn’t start until 10.00pm that night, the pathways were all clear and the flood gates, pathways hadn’t been closed (they have a flood gate on that pathway). That’s not to say he didn’t fall in the water as I have no idea- but the situation and the flooding in Lewes from scrolling back on the site was no where near as bad as I think we are all now imagining. Yes there were train lines further up river flooded, but in the actual town within walking distance things seemed pretty normal if not slightly higher water levels than usual. With regards the initial searches of the water ways- this is always going to be a major concern and search area. Once the later CCTV footage had been released, the water way searches dwindled off quite quickly. Just my own view at this point in time.

Waitrose was open, why not use their toilets rather than walking into the rear car park for a public wee?

New CCTV shows missing fireman outside pub before disappearance

Information on another pub Anthony and his friends went to. This was a few hours before his disappearance.

"In a CCTV clip posted by the landlady of nearby pub The Lansdown Arms, Viv English, Mr Knott is seen entering her pub with three other men at 4.02pm.

Little over a minute later, the firefighter leaves the pub to make a phone call before returning to the venue."

"The area we have searched includes Pells Pool and Pellbrook Cut, as well as bins, street furniture, alleyways and dark areas.

“In addition to the local area, we have also extended our search of the River Ouse north towards Hamsey"

Good point. Just trying to think of a way / reason AK went towards the river.

Also, I take on board ruthbullock's comment about the river not seriously flooding until later that night.

Either way, still the most plausible explanation.

How do you get onto the pathway next to the River Ouse? Or, how would Anthony have got onto the pathway?
On maps it seems like you have to go around Tesco. Can you enter Tesco as seen in the distance from the pathway next to the river?

Also posting a screenshot from maps before the flooding. The bushes which would now be in the middle of the river may have caused difficulty getting out. :(

Aldi and Tesco petrol station are also nearby and I think they would have been open. Tesco petrol station looks a lot easier to get to than the superstore.

Although water is the obvious reason for his disappearance..and with even minimum flooding in the dark it could easily happen..I just struggle with why he would be near it

Waitrose doesn't have toilets.
Here's a picture of the west bank of the river.
It's a bit misleading as it's overlaid with an artists impression of the Phoenix Industrial Estate after development, but at the present time, where those redbrick houses are is a largely empty, disused industrial estate with many access points to the river, the banks of which have been fortified by walls at that point.

He wouldn't have been able to see the filling station from the junction of Market Street and West Street (A2029) unless he walked down to Phoenix Causeway, at which point he'd have seen Waitrose anyway.
It's ok looking at it on GoogleEarth and maps to work out the best way to get somewhere but you need top put the little yellow man at that point to see what he'd have seen.

Sorry, can't get access? And I really doubt it's new.

If we all disagree on how bad the flooding was....I'm on the other side of the ocean...so I can not know what happened with the river(s) on that unfaithful night....could we please come to some moderate, in between picture?

We know he was seen walking up past the flea market at 7.41 and we know he doesn't have local knowledge. Where had he previously been? The Royal Oak and Lansdowne. He may have therefore continued walking a route that he did know, which is up to the War Memorial and then down St Nicolas Street or more likely Station Street (albeit no CCTV footage has been published from here). That would take him down towards the station, but if he is looking for cigarettes etc rather than a train, could he have walked back down Friars Walk and found his way to the River Ouse in this part of the town?

From Market Street (last sighting) to West Street (A2029) and down the hill onto Phoenix Causeway where there's a bridge.
Cross the bridge and almost immediately after there's a small footpath (before the bus stop if you're looking on maps) which is surrounded by bushes and leads on to Tesco carpark and the river path.
If you miss that, you need to continue walking to the roundabout and take a left.
Yes, there is an access from the river path right next to Tesco.
