A TEEN mum accused of the manslaughter of her 20-month-old daughter, left her alone in their flat for six days.

Verphy Kudi, 18, was charged after her daughter Asiah died at her flat in Brighton, East Sussex, in December last year.

Prosecuting, Jeremy King said CCTV had shown Kudi leaving her flat in Islingword Road, Brighton on 5th December 2019 (her 18th birthday) and not returning until 11th December.

He said Asiah died while she was away.

The baby was rushed to Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton, but was tragically pronounced dead on arrival.

A postmortem and subsequent further forensic tests found baby Asiah died from neglect.

Words fail me. I can't even begin to imagine the hell this poor baby lived through in those 6 days.

Matching dresses for Asiah and her mom at one point then she leaves her to suffer and die?

Just from things I have heard or witnessed crack addicts leave their children unattended for days. Of course not saying this is the case, but why? Be 18 when you have a sitter or stay the h##l home.

Maybe something happened to the baby before or on the day her mother left her alone,and that’s part of why she did not return for 6 days?could explain why nobody heard the baby distressed?so sad whatever the situation was.

It's not been confirmed it was a mother and baby unit, but it was a flat (apartment), which still begs the question how none of the residents living in neighboring flats never heard the baby in distress.

I saw a video released from her sister recently and must have got the baby unit thing from there? She also mentioned her sister being troubled and that she had a good support network of family and friends.i just can’t imagine not 1 person being concerned by the noise a distressed child would make in that situation.

A post-mortem examination and forensic tests found that Asiah starved, was dehydrated and developed flu. Her cause of death was given as neglect.

Today, Kudi appeared at Lewes Crown Court to enter a guilty plea to manslaughter as her father watched on. Speaking after the hearing, Muba Kudi, 59, said: 'My heart is so broken. My daughter was missing. She had been missing since the age of 14.'"

Not sure why this is a manslaughter charge and not murder tbh MOO.

This is such a devastating story and I think the sentence is too light. Especially devastating as it sounds like there would have been family who would happily have taken the baby.

Many years ago, I was a housing officer for the same supported accommodation she lived in. It was called Gocher Court then and run by a different service provider, but still offered a similar service for young mums and babies. At the time there were no permanent on site staff and we had constant problems with late night parties and non-residents being admitted into the accommodation. It's a very small property really and the noise carried a lot. The couple of girls who were there with their babies and not into partying would frequently complain about the noise.

I wonder if the poor little girl wasn't crying much at all.

It is murder. She knew the baby would die with 6 days of no food and water. She could have given that baby to any of her neighbours and she would have been looked after. It is so unnecessary and a horrifically prolonged death. 9 years is an insult for a long drawn out 6 day murder.

At the time of her death, Asiah did not have a dedicated social worker or any involvement from external agencies, although a social worker was assigned to Kudi. A safeguarding review by the Brighton and Hove Safeguarding Children Partnership, published in 2022, concluded that Asiah's death could not have been foreseen as staff at the YCMA Downslink believed Kudi was a competent and loving parent
