The hearing is due to get underway at 10.30, but it may be delayed because of the number of members of the press and public hoping to attend the hearing. There are only 15 press seats and 21 seats in the public gallery, most of which are reserved for family members.

I am now in thankfully, but attendance has been limited to one journalist per media organisation (it’s quite common for organisations to send multiple staff members); and there are many members of the public and a group of students who will not be able to attend today.

Court is now assembled so the sentencing should get underway shortly. I’ll be updating this feed when I can throughout this morning’s hearing, which is scheduled to last half a day.

11.19am: Boys were strangled

It has just been confirmed that both boys were strangled & then had bin bags placed over their heads. Referring to the pathology report, Mr Justice Goss said both boys died as a result of asphyxiation, & it can not be known for sure whether the strangling or the bag was the cause

In police interview, Machin said he killed Blake and Barrass killed Tristan. Then after killing them both, they each placed plastic bags over their heads to make ‘doubly sure’ they were dead. Machin said after strangling Blake to death he went downstairs & ‘had an energy drink’.

Machin arrived at the property a short time later. It was after this time that the murders of the two boys were called out, estimated at taking place between 6am and 7am. In interview Barrass described attempting to drown another of the children in the bath, but they survived.

This is awful, just thinking how close the surviving kids came to meeting the same fate. I honestly don't know how people can do this to their own children and I don't know how they thought they could explain away the disappearance of them if they hadn't been caught in the act.

At various points during this morning’s hearing Barrass has been sobbing with a tissue held to her face, but she is now silent. Machin has appeared at court with pink, bloodshot eyes, like he has been crying. He’s remained silent, with a pained expression on his face at points.
