Or how many more died and were never located......

Well yes! Falls into oceans or deserts or whatever are not likely to be recorded.

I'm still not sure how ground staff don't see these people on the runway... unless, of course, in some cases the ground staff are facilitating it for $$$.

Man who fell from plane 'could be Nairobi airport employee'

"The fingerprints of a man whose frozen body fell into a garden in London from the landing gear of a Kenya Airways plane are being analysed after being sent by British police to Nairobi, where investigators suspect he may have been an airport employee."

“We need to be grateful that no one on the ground was killed or hurt, but I think that the real focus now needs to be on why this man was so desperate that he felt that he had to do this,” she said, adding that police had told her the body was frozen to the touch."

I hope he will be identified. Sad story.

Good grief. My OH told me about this story being in the news a couple of days back before I noticed it was on here. I can't imagine how shaken up I'd be if this happened in my area, never mind my own garden! :o The fact the clean up crew had to return the next day just makes me feel physically sick :( Poor man, whoever he is. As has already been mentioned, it makes you wonder how desparate these stowaways must be to even attempt this. :(

"The body of a stowaway who fell into the garden of a suburban London house from a jet as it passed overhead, narrowly missed the homeowner.

Police and airline officials say the man fell from the landing gear of the plane as it approached London's Heathrow Airport after a nine-hour flight from Nairobi, Kenya.

The Metropolitan Police force confirmed the body of an unidentified man was found in a south London garden on Sunday, and it's believed he fell from a plane.

He has not yet been identified and his age is also not known as this stage, authorities said."

Body found in London garden fell from Heathrow-bound flight from Nairobi | Daily Mail Online

"One told MailOnline: 'I was pottering around in the kitchen yesterday afternoon when there was an almighty bang.

'At first I thought it was some scaffolding falling down and thought nothing more about it.

'My husband decided to see what was going on and went upstairs to take a look.

'He didn't tell me what had happened at first. He was obviously quite shocked and went out into the street where my neighbour was standing on the phone to the police.

'He was really shaken up. He'd been in the garden when it happened and the body must have landed so close to where he was.

'My husband came back in and I asked him what was going on and he said ''haven't you seen the man? - the man who fell from the sky?''

'I wondered what he was talking about and went up to see for myself and there in the middle of the lawn was a body of a man.' "

Oh, dear. How horrible!

(O/T, I recall a similar case here years ago in another thread, iirc; can’t remember any details.)

Stowaway may have hitched ride on 2 flights before body landed in London garden
"The plane originally started off from the city in South Africa and flew the 3,000 miles to the Kenyan capital, arriving at 7am, local time, on Sunday.

The same aircraft then left Kenya bound for London two hours later, a journey more than 4,000 miles long.

If the man had originally started his journey from Johannesburg it means he would have been on the plane for more than 15 hours before falling to his death.

Charles Owino, of Kenya Police, said: “We need to establish where the lapse was.

"We are looking into the possibility of that happening in South Africa as a line of inquiry.

"There have been cases in the past of stowaways on flights from South Africa to Kenya.”

"The Sun revealed earlier this week the cops investigating the incident have sent the man’s fingerprints to Nairobi for analysis.

All CCTV footage covering the plane taken up to 24 hours before its departure is also being reviewed and the Kenyan Airports Authority is interrogating all staff who came into contact with the aircraft."

Investigators at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi were last night understood to have found CCTV footage of the suspected migrant.

But they were struggling to confirm his identity because no passport or documents were found on the rock-solid corpse which nearly killed the sunbather in Clapham."

Bid to identify man who died in fall from plane

"Scotland Yard has released an e-fit image of the man.

The force said it believed the man was Kenyan but was "keeping an open mind".

"Officers also released images of a bag which was found in the landing gear compartment when the plane landed.

The bag contained a small amount of Kenyan currency and had a strap with "MCA" written on it, the Metropolitan Police said."

Police release e-fit of man who fell from Kenya Airways plane
"The strap of the bag had the distinctive lettering “MCA” written on it, while there was a logo stating: “Wildkat Softball” on the top that the man had been wearing. Bottles of water and a soft drink were also found in the landing gear.

Anyone who can assist with the investigation has been asked to call the Metropolitan police quoting the reference CAD 5395/30 June.

The flight on which the man is believed to have stowed away was a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Heathrow. One early line of inquiry had focused on the possibility that he worked at Nairobi airport."

Identified as 29 years old Paul Manyasi. RIP

Stowaway who died in 3,500ft fall from plane into Clapham garden identified as Kenyan airport cleaner

$

The stowaway who died after falling 3,500ft from an aeroplane into a garden in south London was a Kenyan airport cleaner, it has emerged.

Paul Manyasi is thought to have been nestled in the landing gear of a Kenya Airways flight when he fell from the aircraft.

The 29-year-old, who reportedly worked for cleaning company Colent at Jomo Kenyatta International, landed just feet away from a sunbather in the garden of a home in Clapham on June 30.
---
Speaking to Sky News, his girlfriend of two years described Mr Manyasi as a “jovial person”.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, told the broadcaster: “I was with him in the morning.

"The last time I saw him, we were at work, he suddenly disappeared, nobody knows where he went.
---
In July, Scotland Yard said a bag, water and some food were discovered in the landing gear compartment of the plane. Mr Manyasi’s father confirmed they belonged to his son.

One neighbour had said it was a “miracle” no one else was killed when he plunged from the plane at around 3.30pm, nine hours after the flight set out from Nairobi.

RIP Paul Manyasi.

He looks so young in that photo.

Was he alive when he fell? Or did he fall because he had died already?

I'm very happy he was identified. Rest in Peace Mr. Manyasi. So sorry for his family and girlfriend.

He was frozen so he was certainly already dead. Likely for hours. Then when they dropped the landing gear he fell out at that time...

Air France confirmed that "the lifeless body of a stowaway" was discovered at Charles de Gaulle Airport early in the morning.

The body was found in the well of the landing gear of the aircraft that flew in from Ivory Coast, it said.

An investigation is under way."

"The National Gendarmerie confirmed to the BBC that the body discovered at 06:40 local time (05:40 GMT) was of "African origin".

On Sunday 30 June 2019, the body of a stowaway man fell from a passenger plane on its way to Heathrow airport, and landed in a garden in Clapham, south-west London. The plane had left Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International airport eight hours earlier, and there were a rucksack in one of the plane's wheel wells indicating that the man was from Kenya. Police have tried to find out his identity, but failed, and he was buried in Lambeth cemetery on 26 February 2020, and on the coffin was a metal plaque, reading: "Unknown (Male), died 30th June 2019, Aged 30."
Out of thin air: the mystery of the man who fell from the sky

The article is a long read, not just about the stowaway above, and the try to find out who he was, but about other similar cases, and there are information about what happens to people who survive cold-water drowning, or hiding in plane wheel wells. It's worth reading the article.

Reminds me of that guy they found in Orlando in the mid-90s (apparently 2282UMFL).

People who stow away in plane wheel wells usually don't survive international flights. The planes fly at 30,000 to35,000 feet, where there is little air pressure or Oxygen, and the temperatures are well below zero F.
