UK - Bradford. 3 children (1, 5 & 9) and a woman killed in house fire. *Man arrested on suspicion of murder* (21 Aug '24)

  • #61
I remember reading in an article that he poured petrol over himself and set himself on fire. Whether that turned out to be true or not I don't know.

Well...Ummm...
I'm speechless.
So,
Murder-Suicide?

Or...
He could have splashed himself unwittingly with petrol while committing a crime and caught fire.

'Two men charged with murdering a mother and her three young children in a savage and deliberate house fire have pleaded not guilty.

Mohammed Shabir, 44, and Calum Sunderland, 25,
also denied the attempted murder of a fourth member of the family
while entering their pleads at Bradford Crown Court ahead of their trial next year.

The men only spoke during the 25-minute hearing to enter 'not guilty' pleas over a video link from Forest Bank prison, in Salford, Greater Manchester.

Their case is now set to go to trial on
March 4 next year."

"Today at Bradford Crown Court,
Birtle pleaded not guilty to three charges,
while his legal representation explained he may be 'unfit' to stand trial
due to his psychiatric state.

He denied the intentional strangulation of Miss Gawith,
assault occasioning actual bodily harm on her
and the theft of her mobile phone.

All offences are said to have occurred at their home
a month before the fatal blaze.

Birtle was supported in court by three family members,
who sat in the public gallery for the ten minute hearing.

He had hoped the prosecution would be dropped as a result of his loss,
but he was told the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) intends to proceed.

Birtle has also requested that his ankle tag is removed and his bail conditions amended,
because the funerals for his children will be held next week."

Just read back a few pages on this one since this update and it's still not clear who is who!😯 Possibly...AG was visiting and she was the intended target by her (ex) partner but she managed to get out? Her sister and her 3 children sadly perished and the ex who set himself on fire has recently regained consciousness? 2 other men currently held on charges and there's another court case in a few days!?
What a tangled web!

Good!! I hope it's excruciatingly painful every minute, I hope he is scarred badly and his guilt is consuming his every waking hour!

This article says the judge may delay the trial of 2 until this 3rd man (and I think the actual fire starter!?) is fit to stand trial. Makes sense to me! Do we know in what capacity the other 2 were involved please?

Sharaz Ali, 39, who was seriously injured in the same fire and subsequently spent time in a coma, has been charged with four counts of murder.

Mr Ali appeared via video link from a hospital bed before Bradford Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Also from the BBC article I posted above:
Mohammed Shabir, 44, and Calum Sunderland, 25, both of Keighley, had also previously been charged with murder and were due to go on trial at Bradford Crown Court this week.

The court had been in discussions as to whether Mr Ali would be medically fit to stand trial alongside Mr Shabir and Mr Sunderland.

If they want to try Ali alongside Shabir and Sunderland then that will surely mean a substantial delay. They can't charge him now and give his defence 1 day to prepare for trial.

Three men charged with the murders of a mother and her children who died in a house fire will stand trial together, a court has ruled.

Bryonie Gawith, 29; Denisty Birtle, nine; Oscar Birtle, five; and 22-month-old Aubree Birtle died after the blaze at their home in Westbury Road, Bradford, in the early hours of 21 August last year.

West Yorkshire Police have charged Sharaz Ali, 39, Mohammed Shabir, 44, and Calum Sunderland, 25, with their murders and with the attempted murder of Ms Gawith's sister Antonia.

Mr Shabir and Mr Sunderland, both of Keighley, pleaded not guilty but Mr Ali's participation in a trial due to start this month was uncertain because of serious injuries he sustained in the fire.
On Monday, Bradford Crown Court was told that all three men would be tried together on 17 November due to Mr Ali's "marked recovery".

Sharaz Ali, 39, of no fixed address, is charged with murdering the family, as well as attempting to murder Ms Gawith’s sister Antonia Gawith.

On Monday, he pleaded not guilty at Bradford Crown Court to all five charges, as well as a charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Antonia Gawith.

...

Their trial is expected to go ahead on November 17, the court heard.

Snipped from the link..

Earlier hearings have been told that Ali had been in a coma since the fire and was not expected to be well enough to stand trial, even if he did wake up.

His prognosis was later revised and, following a “marked improvement” in his condition at the beginning of this year, Ali was charged with the offences in March after doctors found him fit to stand trial.

He appeared at his first court hearings via video link from his hospital bed, before being moved to prison.

The three defendants appeared together remotely from prison at Monday’s hearing, when prosecutor David Brooke KC said Ali “does appear to be fit”.

IIRC this man was the b/f (or ex) of sister Antonia who was lucky to escape the fire and she was the intended target by this man primarily?
Karma has already been dealing a nice dose, his first court appearance being from his hospital bed! I hope his bed sores have bed sores!!
Another little karma dose, he'll have wished a million times over that he too died in that tragedy, but God must not have wanted him either..
I hope every single second of his miserable life, he is forever wracked in pain
