UK - Chloe and Josh Bashford, killed in Newhaven, June 2023 *arrest/charged*

I am told that the trial is due to begin on Feb 17th 2025...(was told this by the clerk in Lewes). I attended the court on the date I was expecting only to find it had been adjourned (again)...I will attend and report back (if people want me to)
Appreciated!! Yes, that would be great. It is still not clear to me how this man knew the victims and what went into his crazy mind to commit this crime.

Thanks for the update. So odd how this case is being pushed back and back, while others come to court at a moment's notice. Feel very sorry for the families of Chloe and Josh.

A family say they have been "destroyed" by multiple delays of the trial of a man who is accused of murdering their son and his wife in their family home.
Josh Bashford, 33, and his 30-year-old wife, Chloe, died in Newhaven in June 2023, and a man was charged by police soon after.
A trial has been postponed five times - delays which Josh's mother, Sharon Bashford, said were "cruel", and had left the family feeling there has not been any justice for her son.
The Ministry of Justice said in a statement: "We know that justice delayed is justice denied, and it is clear there are many cases taking far too long to go to trial."

Was in court today prosecution gave their view and evidence about what had happened...there are reporting restrictions in place as young kids are involved so will wait till that is resolved (we were told by tomorrow morning)...so am surprised that the BBC have reported it....much of the evidence was from mobile phone timings, from evidence taken from witnesses that saw victims/defendent before the event, from what the police found...it was quite gruesome...I won't go again now until the summing up...main body of the trial will be evidence from doctors/psychiatrists as to whether defendant was mad or not. Prosecution say he was fine...defence say nah. Trial is taking place in Brighton Madgies which is doubling up as a crown court, so defendant is underneath the public gallery.

Meant to say that the jury is 14 in number...so I guess they anticipate a long trial...judge told jurers not to discuss the case even between themselves (because they were 14) and not to look stuff up in the internet. I think the press were also underneath the Public Gallery as when the judge was talking about reporting restrictions she was kinda looking at and speaking to the area underneath us all. Tomorrow the prosection will round up, though he indicated that he hasn't much left to do. Most of the rest of the trial will be to determine if the defendant is sane. Have read in the press reports that they say he has been sectioned multiple times but I heard he had been sectioned once. Defendant claimed to be getting funds to give to victim through burglaries and he had arranged to meet up with both victims and drive to Croydon to purchase a 7 seater Zafir car. His claim was that he "Flipped" after Chloe B (victim) went on about money so he hit her with a hammer...then went to the kitchen and stabbed her with a kitchen knife 8 times...minutes after Josh B (victim) entered the house...ran upstairs looking for his wife followed by defendant who then stabbed Josh B some 4 times...he then strangled him with some rope. Think the restrictions are to do with naming the children hence the media reports on the BBC/Brighton Argus etc....one point I thought was utterly bizarre was that when they talked about the reporting restrictions (right at the start) the court could find no records of any discussion regarding this matter from previous hearings (at Lewes)...the trial has been adjourned...and adjourned...but you'd think they would...y'know...keep a record of what's going on!!!...it is...a double murder!!!...other observations - the prosecution had/has produced an A3 landscape booklet full of time-lines/photos/plans of the scene and he basically went through this booklet...the jury shared one between two. After the defendant killed the couple (this is a given - so not disputed) he removed the door handles of the bedrooms where each victim lay (he said this was to ensure the children would not see the bodies if the should come home) he also changed his bloodied clothing and removed the doorbell camera (and disgarded it in the garden..). He moved the couple's car and parked it in a residential street. He took Chloe's phone and chucked it in a bush after picking up two of the kids from Nursery and meeting the other two in Costa Coffee before going to McDonald's. Then dropped the kids off at his ex wife's (and Chloe's mother) smoked ciggies and drank beer on Brighton Seafront...then turned himself into Edward Street Police station...telling the enquiry woman..."I have murdered two people and you need to arrest me"

Crikey! That a lot. To go to lengths to hide evidence and then carry on your day, to only go and hand yourself in. Wild. MOO

The court was told that Brooklyn Bashford, the eldest child who is now 18, thought of Martin as a grandfather.
He told police Martin had bought them gifts such as old televisions, furniture and toys but he knew he had a “bad temper”.
Both Martin’s children with Elaine Sturges, Samantha Elphick and Simon Glenn, described their father as having a “really bad temper”.

The court was told that Martin had lent Chloe £600 for a car and she was paying him back at £100 a month.
Martin, who had a gambling habit, had turned to burglary again to raise money and was giving large amounts of cash to Chloe and Josh to help them.
He told a doctor that Chloe “overspent all of the time”. He said that they had four children to support, adding: “ She did everything for the kids but never enough money.”
He said: “We were arguing about the flipping money, and I just went berserk!”
The court was told that Martin claimed they had argued and had “a bit of a screaming match”.
He said to Chloe, “I want my f***ing money”.
She said, “Well, don’t bother with us any more.”
