A man has been arrested after reports that Conservative MP Sir David Amess was stabbed at a constituency surgery.

Essex Police said they were called to reports of a stabbing in Leigh-on-Sea at 12.05pm and recovered a knife from the scene.

They said they are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

A local authority source told The Telegraph that Mr Amess was still inside the church receiving treatment.

"I can tell you there's a big cordon, and there's armed police about. He's still in there. But I hear it's very serious"

A spokesperson for Essex Police has confirmed a knife has been recovered.

Reports are coming through that David Amess, the MP for Southend West, has been stabbed while holding a surgery in his constituency. Essex Police say that a man has been arrested. This news will shock parliament and the country: it is a reminder of the risks that MPs run every time they hold a constituency surgery. In 2010, Stephen Timms was attacked with a kitchen knife at his; and five years ago, Jo Cox was shot dead on the way to a constituency surgery in her seat of Batley and Spen.

An understandable comment. Serious stab wounds invariably require surgery asap.

Friday is the day for MP's to be in their constituencies and to hold surgeries with their constituents. I feel that MP's are extremely vulnerable in this environment and that security must be a whole lot tighter.

MP's at their constituency surgery are soft targets for those that want significant publicity.

A man has been arrested on suspicion murder after a man was stabbed in #LeighonSea.

We were called to Eastwood Road North shortly after 12.05pm.

Sadly, a man later died.

A man was arrested at the scene.

He was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene.

A 25 year-old man was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered.

He is currently in custody.

We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

Yes he was my local MP. He was always out and about visiting places and getting involved.
Awful news that he has died.
