Detectives investigating the disappearance of a 58-year-old woman from the outskirts of Norwich have launched a murder investigation.

Diane Douglas, from Colton, west of Norwich, was reported missing on Thursday 21 October 2021 by family members who had lost contact with her for several years. The family alerted police after renewed attempts to contact her failed.

Officers have been making a number of enquiries since then in efforts to trace her, however detectives from the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team have now declared the case a ‘no body’ murder investigation.

A 56-year-old man has been arrested this evening (Saturday 30 October 2021) in Wales on suspicion of her murder and is being brought back to Norfolk for questioning. Both parties were known to each other.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Matthew Connick, said: “Although we hope to find Diane alive, we do believe it is highly likely that she has come to harm as she has not been seen for a significant period of time, we have therefore launched a murder investigation”

“A man has been arrested this evening and will be questioned in due course on suspicion of her murder. We have a team of officers searching her last known address in Colton and we expect this search to continue for a number of days. We would urge anyone who may have seen, known or has any information concerning Diane's disappearance to contact us.”

Anyone with information should contact Norfolk Police on 101 quoting Operation Entity.

Man arrested on suspicion of murder after woman vanished from house

Villagers said the farmhouse which overlooks a field with a herd of redpoll cattle had been rented out for around ten years.

It is not known how long Ms Douglas had lived at the address, or when she was last seen.

A dog walker on a nearby footpath said: 'The farmhouse used to be the home of a retired RAF officer, but has been rented since he moved out.

'It is really very remote and cut off from the rest of the village. There are high hedges so you cannot really see whether someone is at home or not.'

The force has not released details of when she was last seen - or if it is even known.

On Monday, Stuart Williamson, also from Colton, was charged with murder after being arrested in Wales on Saturday night.

The 56-year-old, of Barford Road, is accused of killing Ms Douglas between 1 and 31 December 2018.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Norwich Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

A police cordon remains in place at a property in Barford Road, where searches will continue to take place.

Officers searching a property on the outskirts of Norwich as part of a ‘no-body’ murder investigation can confirm human remains have been found.

The property in Barford Road, in Colton, was cordoned off on Saturday (30 October 2021) and since then searches have been taking place at the property and grounds.

Yesterday (Tuesday 2 November 2021) excavation work carried out in the garden led to human remains being found, which have been recovered today. While formal identification will take place in due course, officers believe the remains to be those of Diane Douglas. A Home Office post mortem examination will take place in due course.

Diane was reported missing on Thursday 21 October 2021 by family members. Detectives from the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team declared the case a ‘no body’ murder investigation after enquiries revealed Diane had not been seen for a significant period.

Stuart Williamson, 56, and of Barford Road, Colton, is accused of murdering Diane between 1 and 31 December in 2018, when she would have been aged either 55 or 56.

Williamson was arrested on Saturday in Abergavenny, Wales, and was brought back to Norfolk for questioning before being charged with murder on Monday night. He was remanded in custody and appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court yesterday (Tuesday 2 November 2021) and Norwich Crown Court today (Wednesday 3 November 2021).

He was remanded in custody and the next court hearing will take place on Wednesday 22 December, with the plea and trial preparation hearing due to take place on 14 January 2022.

A provisional trial date has been set for April next year

How odd is this? Stuart is accused of this murder almost 3 years ago. Poor Diane to not to have anyone report her missing sooner. Such a sad case, RIP Diane.

@StillDiggin i know this was a month or so ago. But I just came on here to say I know the family fairly well. They were led to believe they were contacting Diane as she was replying to messages and also sending birthday/Xmas cards. But it clearly wasn’t her. It’s so so tragic. They contacted police after deciding to go to the house and see her in person. To be told that she was ‘at work and didn’t want to see them.
It all didn’t add up. Hence everything unfolding.

A 56-year-old man accused of murder who was due to stand trial later this year has died, police can confirm.

Stuart Williamson, of Barford Road, Colton, was found dead in his prison cell at HMP Norwich on Wednesday 29 December 2021 around 5pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Williamson was on remand in prison awaiting trial after being charged with the murder of Diane Douglas.

Detectives from the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team launched a murder investigation in October last year after relatives reported Diane missing.

Williamson was arrested in Wales on 30 October and brought to Norfolk for questioning where he was later charged with murdering Diane between 1 and 31 December in 2018 when she would have been aged 55 or 56.

Following a search at Williamson’s home address the body of Diane Douglas was recovered on 3 November 2021. A Home Office post-mortem examination established the provisional cause of death as unascertained (decomposed) pending further examination.

A hearing will be heard at Norwich Crown Court in due course and a file will be prepared on behalf of the Coroner.
