Father accused of murdering daughter said he lay on the floor after finding her seriously injured

Sequence of events according to BB. I couldn't decide which bit to quote, but here he admits an ambulance wasn't called for at least 2 hours.

Defence lawyer Icah Peart QC said: "Were you thinking that you might be blamed for what happened to Ellie?"

Butler replied: "I was just shocked. Not then."

Mr Peart asked: "What did you do?"

The defendant said: "Crying. It just took me a while to get up off the floor. I don't remember everything about Ellie. I tried desperately hard to repress that memory so it's not easy for me but at one point I contacted Jennie."

Graphic designer Gray rushed home in a taxi, arriving about an hour later. In all, it was two hours after he contacted her that the couple called 999 for an ambulance, the court has heard.

First few tweets from today. No idea whether it's still defence or cross-ex.

He likes to use children's characters to describe things.
Childish mind?
In fact I would probably agree.
His mental age is defo younger than him. I'd put him down as a petulant teenager.
With the 'if I don't want to I won't you can't force me'
Or if anyone is familiar with 'Kevin & Perry go large"
Doesn't like boundaries or compliance.
Confrontational.
How can you 'nap' during the day with 2 kids under 7?
They could be up to all sorts. Gosh.

Ben Butler claims his daughter's cremation against his wishes was part of a 'cover up' to hide a problem with Ellie's skull

I'm sure someone (maybe Tortoise) posted there was ample time and access to Ellie's body, but I can't find the post.

There was ample time becuz mail had been passed thru both defence and prosecution re the cremation. Prosecution waited and waited for Defence to reply. But they never did. So the cremation was put on hold and more tissue samples and any samples that might be needed. We're taken in that time. By the time all photos samples etc had been collected. Still nothing from Butlers QC. So Ellie was released to GP for cremation.

Ben Butler says 'whatever happens, it's the rope for me' as he explains how he no longer wants to live whatever the result of the trial

Much more at link.

The court heard that Butler then rang a friend, Ian Hudson, whom he had phoned in 2007 when Ellie had fallen ill with what was originally thought to be shaken baby syndrome. Butler was jailed for assaulting her, but his conviction was overturned in 2010.

Butler said he did not tell his friend what had happened. Instead they had a brief conversation about a bank account.

Butler said he put a towel stained with some of Gray’s blood and some other items including a diary of hers in the bin because he sensed he would be blamed by police because of the previous overturned conviction for assaulting Ellie

Earlier, he described the prosecution team as the “chuckle brothers” and said they had concocted the charges of murder and child cruelty. He said fractures found on Ellie’s head had been caused while she was in foster care at her grandfather’s or when she was in the care of the local authority.

He said he picked up a bag of rubbish and a towel that had Gray’s blood on it, and took them out to bins near to their family home in Sutton.

“I said I need to get some air, I felt I couldn’t breathe”, he said.

“I walked the dog and I chucked the rubbish away.

“I wanted to get some fresh air and try not to face, eventually, calling an ambulance and going through it.”

Butler said he was “in a daze” adding: “I walked the dog and I picked the dog s**t up, I didn’t want to go back and didn’t want to face what was going to happen.”

Things to do before calling an ambulance for your seriously injured daughter.

  • Lie down on the floor.
  • Call your partner
  • Call a friend about a bank account
  • Empty your bins
  • Get some air
  • Take your dog for a walk

ETA: Gggggrrrrrrrrrr

I have never heard such a load of BS in my life.

I don't know if there's a legal minimum time a jury has to spend deliberating, an hour or two perhaps, but when it comes to that time I predict they will be back with their verdict. Unless there is a rogue juror of course.

Having heard his account I don't think the prosecution even needs to finish cross examination.

Prosecution started cross-exam after the afternoon tea break. They are going to pick up tomorrow morning with the 999 call recording.

It really is too sad to hear how Ellie was left to die on the floor, all alone, with her bedroom door closed.
