Just a thought, Gaffa Tape was used a lot in the motor trade. Quick, easy temporary repairs.
fwiw
  • ''Supporting the lighting team: Apply gaffer tape to direct, bend and shape lights.
  • Fixing last-minute problems: Secure microphones to the artist, temporarily repair props, seal equipment, write removable notes on surfaces.
  • Securing the camera: Fix a camera to a specific surface, label accessories or cover up the camera logo in case you don’t want to promote a certain brand. Gaffer camera wing to absorb excessive impact in the event of drops and bumps.
  • Marking spots, such as: Where an artist should stand. Where you need to put your tripod if you want to use the exact same perspective again. Where props should be set.''

2nd April 2005
''TERROR TIMELINE:
ATTACK 1. January 25 1991: Two 23-year-old lovers are in their car at Beech Clump car park when a masked man with a handgun pulls open the passenger door and demands cash. He then ties them up using a seatbelt and plastic garden ties and puts plastic bags over their heads before launching a serious sexual assault on the woman. When done, the victims say he removed the bags before calmly walking away into the night.

ATTACK 2. November 3 1992: A couple are in Spindle Trees car park when a torch suddenly shines through the window, the door is pulled open and a masked man with gun demands money. The male victim is tied up and forced into his car boot. His girlfriend is stripped from waist down and has masking tape wrapped round her head in a "mummy" fashion. She is carried to the attacker's car and driven her to a house and raped. Hours later she is dumped in a layby.

ATTACK 3. November 29 1994: A couple are in Forest View car park when man knocks on the window waving gun and demands money. They give it to him through crack in window, but when he tells them to open their door. The boyfriend starts to get out and the attacker flees.

ATTACK 4. April 22 1996: Two teenagers, a girl aged 16 and a boy aged 18, are in Hawthorns car park when man in balaclava flings open the car door, puts gun in their faces and demands cash. The pair are tied up and the girl's handbag is put over the man's head. The girl is again bound round the head with masking tape, marched to a nearby car, and driven out past Sparsholt where the man then sexually assaults her before dumping her by the road.

ATTACK 5. May 28 1998: A couple in are Spindle Trees car park when a man tries the door handle of their car. Before he can demand any cash the couple start up the car and drive off, leaving the attacker standing alone.''

that's a long time between attacks - like 2 +/- years between each

Following! I was just watching a YT video about Laura Richards who worked at New Scotland Yard as a crime analyst. I think she might have even discussed these cases. She mentioned that these types of offenders (rapists) are often married already and have a history of abusive behavior towards their partners.

About the tape: Gaffer Tape vs. Duct Tape: What’s the Difference?

Gaffers tape is very different from duct tape. I am not sure if Gaffa tape is the same as duct tape or gaffers tape?

Regarding the silver masking tape and its (other) uses.. fwiw

''Suggested applications

  • Transportation, aerospace, automotive, commercial vehicle, RV, bus, truck, ship yards, military, metal working, furniture, electronics, solar, trailer manufacturing and woodworking
  • Sealing, holding, bundling, reinforcing, identifying, tabbing, wrapping, splicing and protecting
  • Securing conduit ends
  • Temporary repair
  • Protecting against light sandblast overspray''

IIRC it’s known as Gaffa tape generally, certainly back then I’m sure that’s what it was called.
Its uses are very widespread, so unlikely to help pinpoint his trade unfortunately.

Just some thoughts IMO :

The attacker carried her to his ‘Land Rover-type car, where she was assaulted and then driven around country lanes for around 45 minutes before stopping his vehicle at an empty building.
---- IMO, he seemingly knows the area well and has a 'base'. I wonder if this building was ever found.

When his attack was over, the victims say that their attacker removed the plastic bags from their heads and calmly strolled off into the night.
----- IMO, I don't think he would be very young and I doubt this was his first time attacking someone.

No obvious accent was ever identified.
----- It's unfortunate his accent was not recorded, even if it was to say he was from the same area of something.

It seemed they arrested a couple of people and then released them without further action.

Could the reason this teen was subjected to the ''worst assault'' of them all because she was with a married man?
The car circling around then returning is reminiscent of the Zodiac Killer as suggested earlier by another poster. speculation.
rbbm
''The worst assault came in November 1992 when a young girl was raped twice while her boyfriend was tied up in the back of their car.
That attack followed a pattern which has been repeated in most of the other cases''
''At 10.30pm the couple's car door was abruptly opened by a man wearing a black ski mask and holding a gun. The couple, a 20-year-old woman and her married boyfriend, were forced to kneel on the back seat of their car while their hands were tied up.

The gunman used masking tape to blindfold them and bundled the 21-year- old man into the boot of his car.

The terrified woman was bundled into a Land-Rover-type vehicle, taken to an empty building and raped twice. She was then tied up again and dumped in a layby.''

""What is common is that just before an attack, a vehicle comes into the car park, sweeps around and drives out again.''

That would insinuate he knew his victims..

My question is how did the attacker know the man was married? It’s possible (but maybe unlikely) that he knew these two and had been watching.
Seeing the man’s car he then goes into action. Alternatively, maybe one or both of them have the fact that they were committing adultery.
It does seem that this triggered a more intense attack.

He was a very, very patient and controlled offender. Any resistance whatsoever and he fled.

However it seems like he may have attempted two attacks on the same day in 1992. The first attempt wasn't reported until around 2001 (this was the sighting of the 1978 Land Rover). The second attack was the one where he took the victim to the house which has never been identified. I may be wrong about this though.

It's also quite possible that there were additional unreported attacks or attempts.
It was a spot where 'couples' often met in secret for affairs, and such couples might not want to go to the police.

The building hasn't ever been identified.

Nobody ever really saw his face. I suspect he was 25-40 years old in 1991. He certainly seems to have had the patience/confidence of an 'older' offender.

The victims were all locals and none of them seemed to notice the accent of an 'outsider'. Some of the police had doubts about the ex-cop arrested in 2000, as this man had a distinct northern accent. The suspect put forward in the recent podcast was from Kent, which isn't to my knowledge an area with a distinct accent (like Liverpool, Glasgow, Gloucester etc).

I doubt very much if he knew any of the victims, although I guess it's not an impossibility.

Regarding the mystery building from 1992...

In 1996, he told his victim he was taking her to a house, but ended up assaulting her outdoors.

She wasn't a compliant victim, so he may have 'cut his losses' and decided not to take her there. Alternatively, he may no longer have had access to the property.

He was an offender who probably had a script in his mind. If the script wasn't followed, then he seems to have lost interest somewhat.

When he took the victim to the building, he made her wear a dress (which he either brought with him, or took from the property). He seems to have tried to make the rapes seem 'consensual' in that he didn't use excess violence, or verbal threats.

All in all, he was a very peculiar character. It is possible that he made the victim put on the dress for forensic reasons. Perhaps he was trying to avoid leaving hair or fibre evidence on her skin, rather than satisfying a particular fetish for woollen dresses...

yes I had noticed that but I wondered if he only did the second attack because the first one was a failure

The profilers from the documentary thought that FMR treated his attacks a bit like military missions. They thought the rapist might have been too 'soft' to have been in the army though.

He was certainly interested in the military and military tactics. The plastic ties he used to restrain victims are used in army restraint training. He also wore a combat jacket and carried a naval officer's type bag. Probably the type who liked visiting army surplus shops IMO.

  • #35
The police mentioned how rare it was for rapists to use plastic ties.

The murderer and serial rapist from Yorkshire, John Taylor (arrested in 2001) shared quite a few similarities with FMR. Taylor used plastic ties, put plastic bags over victims' heads, and had large freezer units at his home.

I don't think Taylor was FMR though. Taylor was a sexual sadist and was much more violent, and much less evidence savvy, than FMR.

Operation Kayak was set up in 1995 and there have been at least three arrests.

One in 1996, then the pervert ex-cop from the documentary in 2000, and then the 'prime suspect' after the appeal in 2002.
what doc and which cop?

a very similar MO to the zodiac killer - creeping up in carparks

maybe looking for a true crime fan?
Exactly what I was thinking, regarding mo of Zodiac. Barring the lack of killing in this case and lack of banter in Zodiac's.

I had an ex who did security work, but he was a slightly weird fantasist who spent money on stupid stuff, walkie talkies and anything similar to police or army gear. I found out he would swagger around at work acting like he was the police and loved pulling power trips over unknowing people.
This person may have been like that. Could he also have been in the T.A I wonder. Or a former cadet.

It's The Real Cracker documentary (on the first page of this thread).

The ex cop became a suspect because he ticked a lot of boxes with regards to the profile.
