Absolutely awful - that poor couple.

How would he have found out that they'd withdrawn cash from the bank?

My thoughts too - wonder if he was involved in the improvement work that the couple were planning? Or someone who was mentioned it to him. It said in the article that the Walkers had forgotten where some of the money had been hidden, so maybe this had been mentioned/witnessed by a workman.

“On October 22, 2021 Ken had visited their bank and he had withdrawn £30,000 in cash. Whilst Ken was by nature a very private person, Freda shared the news of the withdrawal with [SB] (niece) and several others.

[...]

“He secreted bundles of £5,000 around his room but it seems Ken had forgotten precisely where he had put all these bundles. It isn’t entirely clear how the defendant learned of the existence of the £30,000.

[...]

"Culea was uninjured when the police arrested him, whilst the Walkers had each plainly been the victims of a brutal, sustained and completely merciless attacks. The most likely explanation for what occurred is that Culea, who whilst he left with some cash, plainly had failed to locate the vast bulk of the £30,000, became increasingly frustrated with, and doubtless incredulous and disbelieving of Freda not knowing where the cash was hidden.

"And with Ken, particularly when in fear, not being able to recall, and so, believing he was being lied to, he sought to extract the money’s location with violence. Culea almost certainly imagined that Ken would reveal the location of the cash, the more he tortured Freda."

"On Friday, October 14, on day four of the trial, Cylea's defence statement was read to the jury.

In it he admitted to punching the victims and tying them both up having sneaked their address and hiding in a bathroom before being discovered by the two elderly pensioners. He said when that happened, Mrs Walker began screaming which caused the defendant to "push out" at her before going on to hit them both.

The defendant said he then tied their hands and feet while he searched the semi-detached property for money before leaving. But he denied putting a bag over her head saying he could not explain how that happened."

I'd been wondering how he knew about the money. Looks like he just happened to be in the bank at the same time. From link above -

And he added a significant explanation for how Culea knew about the fact the Walker’s had so much cash in their home.

In court Culea claimed he had overheard a conversation in a Polish or Romanian shop about a ‘wealthy couple’ in Langwith Junction.

But Mr Murray-Carr said: ‘The information relayed to me was that Ken had withdrawn some money from the Lloyds Bank in Shirebrook and this had been witnessed by the man who was in the dock.

'Later that day Ken went into a betting shop in Shirebrook and there was a confrontation between them where that man demanded money.

'My suspicion is that he followed Ken home and that is how he knew where he lived.'
