wow, I don't think this (arresting for murder, then "releasing") would or could legally happen in the US. Weird and curious indeed.

Lots to speculate but that will do no good.

So the police are now working on the assumption that she's just run away?

It seems odd that they arrested two people on suspicion of murder without any body or weapon and then let them both go again.

I find it odd that it doesn't state whether either of them have been released on bail, or entirely without charge, or somewhere in between?

I would imagine that something suggesting serious bodily harm was found in one of the houses/flats they searched, and the police felt that the evidence implied murder but that they've been unable to confirm that yet.

RD was released on bail, saw that earlier.

Imagine NE is the same.

Forensics need time to process stuff.

Police wont want to waste their questioning hours now - can always be recalled later.

ETA both have been released under investigation, therefore NE must be on bail conditions also.

<modsnip> ... anybody can pretend to be who they want and say whatever they like on social media, and that's how rumours start. If we stick to what has been reported in the papers and / or police nobody can come along and blame us for anything incorrect. It can be v frustrating but if a rumour is factual is usually isn't long before a verified report follows. We do quite a bit of sitting on hands and working behind the scenes just waiting to be able to say it out loud!!

Gaia's social media is fine to mention, and the mods here usually allow "find Gaia" type pages (unless they get stupidly out off hand a la Corrie). Likewise most news channels and official reporters use FB/Twitter so we can quote those. You can give a general indication / pointer e.g "there are some interesting comments on the Dorset Echo article" and provide a link.

Hope I have explained it well enough. Like I say, rules can be maddening, but when you see some of the shocking and unfounded stuff on FB you start become pretty glad of our ruley little world here!!

Being "released under investigation" is different to being bailed. It only came in this year apparently.

It's explained at the following link.

http://www.wellsburcombe.co.uk/released-investigation-explained/

Here's a quick snippet which explains briefly.

"Q: I have been released under investigation, what does this mean?

A: Your release from police custody under investigation means that you are not on police bail. There is no requirement to attend again at a police station. However, the police investigation is ongoing and at some point a decision will be made. You might be required to attend again for interview, you might be charged or summonsed to attend court, or no further action will be taken. You will have been given a notice when released from the police station which sets out some further guidance on what it means to be released under investigation. This information will include –

 • “inappropriate contact with anyone linked to your case, either directly or indirectly, through a third party or social media, may constitute a criminal offence”
 • The notice will mention serious criminal offences of Witness Intimidation and tell you that you could face “up to 5 years in prison” or perverting the course of justice, in which case you could face up to “life imprisonment”.
It is not always clear what you can and cannot do."

Edit: You'd have thought if they had sufficient evidence that they would have been bailed rather than released under investigation.

Oh that's very interesting Chimpface - thank you.

I definately saw that RD had been released under investigation but also on bail, so I wonder if the reporters got it wrong. I mean, perish the thought they would print something incorrectly !! but it does seem odd that she would be bailed and he would not, being as he seems to be the one who had the far more extensive questioning.

Oh no, I don't like the look of that van.

Interesting, I wonder where it's going. This is such a strange case so far.. Gaia running to the house she was last seen at, no other reported sightings or CCTV that we're aware of, two people arrested on suspicion of murder and then consequentially released.

I'm going to remove my previous two postings about the IG as Tortoise and Cagney have said - it's best to focus on the missing person and any named suspects, it's always difficult to know what is within the rules as MSM often takes quotes from Facebook and things.

Edit - I can't seem to delete / edit my previous posts, anyone have any idea?

No problem :)

You're probably right re: bail/released under investigation. I'd imagine it's been reported differently in different rags. But hey, let's not let facts get in the way of a good story!

We only have a brief window in which to edit our posts. I'm not sure how long it is, an hour or less?

The mods will take care of anything they feel shouldn't be here. What I've seen them do before is to edit a few posts and then sometimes they make a mod post to recap rules for newbies (and sometimes oldies too!) and it's a good idea to look out for those posts from the mods and read them carefully. If we keep breaking rules after that point we often get threads closed for review and they might hand out warnings or suspensions...from what I've seen they seem to be gentle and friendly for newbies who they know are excited and not used to the rules, but it's best to keep within the rules when you know what they are, and to PM a mod if you're unsure about anything.

Is Manor Gardens where NE and/or RD live?

 • #136
Sorry that was lazy. Yes it is

 • #137
What was posted 4 hours ago though, was he not released afterwards?

 • #138
So if he has been released could this be a ploy to watch him and hope he leads them to Gaia?

I've seen it done before.

 • #139
Possibly if they thought she was alive, if not they'd hold him for the maximum time whilst trying to find evidence

I wonder if they found evidence she was there, clothing and maybe even blood, given her distressed state something may have happened. Couple that with the odd TV appearance and the neighbour reporting shouting and that might be reasonable cause to arrest them both.

Is it possible said evidence could have been there but there was actually no crime and they helped her disappear or she simply left...

This is certainly an interesting one

Interview with RD's ex-husband.

MISSING teenager Gaia Pope disappeared after turning up at the home of her friend’s grandmother in a “distressed and agitated state”, it was claimed tonight.

The student, who suffers from epilepsy and PTSD, then started to take off her clothes in front of Rosemary Dinch, 71, telling her: “I’m too hot.”

Reporting Rosemary’s account of the incident, ex-husband Greg Elsey, 69, said: “Gaia went in and stripped off the top half of her clothes down to her bra.

“Rosemary was really concerned and managed to persuade her to put her clothes back on, but she left without her coat.

“She said she needed to go and find one of her old school friends.”

Neighbours said they heard Rosemary and Gaia having an “altercation” on the day she went missing — Tuesday November 7.
