UK - Gunshots fired outside houses of parliament in London. 22 Mar 2017

not in the US of A

Well we're in little old England now, where pretty much the only civilians with guns are farmers or gangsters. Gun crime is really not a big issue here, at least not for your average citizen, so our police don't all carry guns because as a rule they don't need to. I personally have never seen or held a gun and I don't know anyone who has one or could even get one.

We have only ever had 3 mass shootings - in 1987, 1996 & 2010 - and our gun laws are extremely tight. A friend works as a rapid response (armed police) officer in a city and it's rare he has to use his gun. He has shot people to take them down but never had to kill anyone. He is not on public patrol (unless at an event requiring security) and is only called out in extreme situations when he drives like a bat out of hell to get the baddies.

Fair answer. The second part of my question though is why are there so few attacks if there are so many sleeper cells operating in the west in the past 15-20 yrs?

How many terrorists have been stopped before they could carryout their plot to murder in mass in the US?

Didn't the FBI Director state they have over 1,000 open investigations in all 50 states?

I hope the reason is we have good intelligence in our agencies. They have been able to stop many before they happened although some of Islamic terrorists here have been able to murder in mass and do mass injuries to others.

This might help you understand better, gun deaths (highlighted in dark green) are pretty rare here compared to the US.That said, I agree that police officers stationed around our national "targets" should carry guns.

You must have been responding to the wrong person. I never said anything about gun deaths.

The vast majority of attacks are stopped, US (and UK*) intelligence is pretty sharp. Unfortunately, with the advent of the "nick a lorry and find a crowd" trend amongst terrorists, I fear attacks of that nature will increase, they don't need bombs to cause terror. It's extremely worrying and I think there'll be a bigger one soon.

* I don't know about US figures but a quick google tells me the UK stops a handful each year. The most recent article I could find says 13 since 2013. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-39176110

The civilian who called him "Asian" was trying very hard to be grounded and intelligible for the tv guy, but she (as a visual witness) was clearly shook up. Plus, read what Skibs has to say about the British definition of "Asian".

I did read it and found it very interesting.

I was just commenting that to me, the man didn't look any type of Asian. And if he had been the guy MSM was originally reporting, that man isn't Asian at all. He was born in London and his family is Jamaican.

We do have armed Police and generally those who patrol or guard our major airports, tourist attractions (Parliament, Buckingham Palace etc) and largest cities are armed. General Police are not armed or armed with tasers but we have units of specialist armed response teams all over the country. It works very well broadly.
Wanted to add, I am not sure the murdered police officer was unarmed and would be surprised if they weren't but maybe they just couldn't react in time.

I thought I read a witness account that said the deceased police officer had fallen down and was then stabbed. But maybe they meant he fell AFTER he was stabbed. Not sure. It was in one of the very first links of the thread earlier today.

Journalist Quentin Letts of the Daily Mail newspaper told LBC radio that he had witnessed the stabbing of the policeman and the shooting of the assailant from his office in the parliament building.

"He (the assailant) ran in through the open gates ... He set about one of the policemen with what looked like a stick," Letts said.

"The policeman fell over on the ground and it was quite horrible to watch and then having done that, he disengaged and ran toward the House of Commons entrance used by MPs and got about 20 yards or so when two plain-clothed guys with guns shot him."

I fear we will see more of this type of terrorist attacks.

I would not be surprised this terrorist is an injustice collector, more specifically vicarious injustice collector.

9/11 Terrorists, Tsarnaev Brothers, Kouachi Brothers, Seifeddine Rezgui, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, Omar Mateen, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, Abdulkadir Masharipov, and now this.

Hey, I've been wondering where you've been. I expected you on this thread.

How is this case associated with Brussels?

As an aside, I went on a school trip with 90 kids (ages 7-9) last week, we visited a mosque and learned a bit about Islam and the culture, food, prayers and clothing. The kids got to try on traditional Muslim dress and learn some basic greetings. There is only one Muslim child out of the 90 and he was the only one that had ever been in a mosque before, the rest of them learned a bit about a different faith and asked lots of interesting questions.

I'm glad they went last week before this happened, I think it's important for the next generations to be culturally educated. This attack will be probably be discussed at school tomorrow and I hope our trip means that they will not identify Islam as equalling terrorism.

Man.............you ARE one heck of a trooper!!

Maybe cause a lot of us here keep up with global news but I am surprised at how this is being covered - its like its a rare event.

Heck there were three events last week in France- I am on RT, and there narrative is filled with like shock at a terror attack - its very strange IMO

Hi my dear!

I have never understood all this they have not "claimed responsibility" yet. They do this everytime. Like folks who endorse this kind of thing are upstanding law abiding folks.

Its almost as if they expect ISIS ISIL whatever to say we had nothing to do with this - that to me is just stupid - they claim everything - that is their deal.

Why on earth would they say anything other than this is our attack??

Does anyone know why he crashed??

Apparently some of them are critically injured per RT in background.

One of them apparently was thrown over into the water below -- was rescued and is in hospital

Ahhhh I did not realize he got into Parliment area.
