Serial killer Shipman cremated in secret

Feb 25 2004

Serial killer Harold Shipman has been cremated at a service which was attended by his wife Primrose and just a handful of other mourners.

Primrose, 54, was advised not to bury her husband in case the grave was attacked, according to The Sun newspaper.

The 57-year-old, who hanged himself in Wakefield prison last month, is believed to have killed at least 215 people while working as a GP in Hyde, Greater Manchester.

He was jailed for life as Britain's worst serial killer.

It was not known whether Shipman's children Sarah, 36, Christopher, 32, David, 24, or Sam, 21, were at their father's funeral, which was held last Tuesday, according to The Sun.

The Prison Service did not send a representative and a spokesman said it had no input into the funeral arrangements.

"It's really not something the Prison Service would have any control over.

"He died and we released his body to the coroner," he said.

"This is a matter for the family."

Harold Fredrick Shipman[1] (14 January 1946 – 13 January 2004) was an English doctor and one of the most prolific serial killers in recorded history with 218 murders being positively ascribed to him, although the actual number is probably much higher.

Shipman's conviction in February 2000 for killing 15 of his patients forced him to forfeit his lucrative pension.

Then he discovered his wife would get a bumper lump sum and maximum widow's pension if he died before the age of 60.

So on January 13, 2004, a day short of his 58th birthday, he duly obliged.

Less than six months later, Primrose got a £100,000 payout and an index-linked pension of £1,207 a month, at taxpayers' expense, ensuring financial security for life.

"He was exercising the ultimate power of controlling life and death and repeated it so often that he must have found the drama of taking life to his taste," prosecutor Richard Henriques QC said during the murder trial.

The majority of his victims were found fully clothed and sitting in a chair, seemingly passing of natural causes. And while he mainly targeted elderly women, his youngest victim may have been only four-years-old.

Convicted of murdering over a dozen of his own patients, Shipman was sentenced to a life term in prison in 2000, however four years later came his suicide at age 57.

It’s believed the true number of his victims is much higher - over 250.

The bearded monster took the coward's way out by hanging himself in his spartan 12ft by 6ft cell on D-wing on January 14, 2004.

That inmate CJ 8199 – the once respected family doctor who according to prosecutors enjoyed 'the ultimate power over life and death' – could dictate the timing and circumstances of his passing was scandalous in itself. But it then emerged that by killing himself before his 60th birthday, Shipman ensured his loyal wife Primrose was entitled to a bumper pension that could eventually be worth more than £500,000 (AU$973,000), including an immediate £100,000 (AU$195,000) lump sum
