At the root of the dispute

T: Who was at the root of this dispute?
S: Joe and Nick
T: How do they relate to anything?
S: They were business associations of John Sinfield’s. They wanted some paperwork initially, an A4 lever arch file. It didn’t register how serious it was until Nick came on that day.

12:32
'He wanted a problem solved'

T: When Nick did come on that day you must have been surprised?
S: Yeah I was. I was astounded, shocked. I can’t think of the right word
T: Because he wasn’t taking you away and demanding money.
S: No, he said he wanted a problem solved. When I asked what, I got some expletives so I just shut up.
T: Did they go upstairs and turn the place upside down [for this paperwork]?
S: No

Descriptions of Nick and Joe

T: These people are people well known to you aren’t they?
S: Yes
T: Joe Cippullo has an Italian, he has short grey hair, about 5 foot 6 in height.
S: Yes
T: Nick is much taller
T: Can you think of any reason why somebody listening to these description should have these men in mind?
S: No
T: They’re known to your family aren’t they?
S: Yes. These men haven’t crossed my mind for months. Nick, last Christmas and Joe, long before that. I haven’t seen Joe for six years, maybe more.
T: These are people from your time in Bassingbourn?
S: Yes
T: And when you made up this tale are they part of the images you made up?
S: No not at all

Ah, Nick last Christmas... just around the time he came up with the Nick & Joe story

[h=3]'They may be trying to frame me'[/h]T: It took you a long while in custody to come up with a story that would touch all the points you had to cover.
Stewart doesn’t answer
T: You had to deal with the fact that her body was in your house in your cesspit and Boris, and the pillow slip, and the dog’s toy, and the bin bags.
S: Yes
T: Did these men ever make a demand against you?
S: They requested money once, yes
T: You must have pondered on this for a long while, why would they bring all this back to your cesspit?
S: It doesn’t make much sense to me.
T: Why wasn’t Boris’ body just dumped in a ditch somewhere? Why wasn’t Helen just dropped off the side of a boat?
S: I don’t know. They may be trying to frame me.

So quite possibly the mentions of a nick and jo or joe in the diaries was totally coincidental..... I cannot believe IS used people he knew as inspiration for his lie. What an almighty idiot that man is.

IS is so devious he probably made those entries to cover his alibi.

'This is all a figment of your imagination'

T: These kidnappers have shown themselves to you, haven’t they?
S: Yes
T: You can give a reasonable description of them?
S: Yes
T: But these men had no need to show themselves to you at all did they. This is all a figment of your information?
S: I really wish it was
T: You need these men to be in person because you need them in person to put Helen Bailey down the cesspit?
S: I don’t understand

12:35
[h=3]'Why did they show themsevles in person?'[/h]T: These two men could have made all this communication by phone, all of these demands that you find the phone, that you go to Broadstairs, that you behave yourself?
S: Yes, that would have been possible

'You can freely make up anything you like'

T: You’re well aware of the fact that you yourself have not been seen in company with the men, Nick and Joe?
S: No
T: You can freely make up anything you like about what they did
S: I haven’t done that
T: And then you advertise what happened in December?
S: Yes
T: By which time all the CCTV that might have been available would have been gone?
S: No

12:36
'I was almost saying what I thought wanted to be said'

T: Why did you want the police out as soon as possible?
S: So that Helen could come back
T: The difficulty with your lies is you haven’t thought about how they interact with other events
S: I was struggling to remember what actually happened at that time. In the police interviews I was almost saying what I thought wanted to be said. I wanted the police gone.

12:36
'You could have told the truth'

T: You’re fleshing out the lie and the possibilities to police. Saying Helen loved Northumberland, that a ‘place special to us was Brighton’.
S: I couldn’t just say nothing could I?
T: You could have told the truth.

I do wonder if that slip up was the name of another friend that Nick and Joe hung around with. Maybe it was that that reinforced to them that he was describing them.

This is the most bizarre trial I've ever followed.

it is my second trial, the first one was Harris, I had no Idea it was like this in real life, only seen boring ones on tv before. I do hope Helen, John and Boris are laughing their heads off in heaven.

Ah in this version he does at least ask what problem they wanted sorted. In his last version he was just like "Ah a problem you say? Cool, take my partner"

Ah, the level arch file is back. A4, not foolscap, let's be clear!

IS is deep in this hole, isn't he?

If they are they haven't used the words "Helen Bailey" so I would imagine not. I haven't specifically looked for them though.

I've been looking on all the Sky journo accounts that I know of and they all seem to be elsewhere...bet they wish they were in court today though

I wondered ages ago on here if the ink/writing was JS's or not. God that guy is living in some sort of other dimension.

I don't think Dolly is online right now - she'll be so mad to have missed the Nick/Joe stage call!

He's just signed his own death warrant! He's crumbling under sustained pressure. He was way more self assured on Friday's Cross.

[h=3]'I wasn't going to tell the truth'[/h]T: Police ask you ‘is there anything that makes you suspect there could be a third party involved in Helen’s disappearance?’ That’s hitting the nail on the head isn’t it?
S: Well I wasn’t going to tell the truth at this point, was I? My point at this time was to deny and not tell anyone about Joe and Nick. To act normally.
T: Someone mentioned kidnapping didn’t they?
S: Police did, yes

I'm wracking my brain on the judge's legal matter... probably a point of law. It's quite significant if he adjourns the court and sends the jury out. It must be something that no-one except the legal teams can be privy to but I imagine IS will still be there to hear the discussion. I'm hoping he's going to say "look this idiot is banged to rights, how about telling him to change his plea to guillty and let us all go home."

I think it's more likely something that was new yesterday and so has to be struck from the record and not considered evidence, maybe hopefully the claim that Helen took his sleeping pills herself.

[h=3]'I only had one choice'[/h]T: You had plenty of time to say it by the time this interview came around. Plenty of time to say [to police] ‘look, I didn’t know how to deal with it. I’m not a policeman. Actually she was kidnapped?’
S: Perhaps I should have said that
T: Plenty of time to get on the phone to your family, her family, and say ‘look I’ve been an idiot here’
S: In my mind I only had one choice.

S: No, by this time I was having to lie.
T: You’re still running with the lie aren’t you?
S: You know I was lying at this point, I’m not denying that in any shape or form

Phone only link to kidnappers

T: No frantic pleas to the kidnappers, tell me how much you want, what can I do? How can I help?
S: At that time I thought she would be back on Friday
T: If this is true this is the only line of contact you had with Nick and Joe, this phone.
S: Yes
T: But you did nothing
S: No

This exchange confuses me. I thought it was established IS had possession of Helen's phone? Did Helen supposedly have it with her when she was 'kidnapped' then?
