Well-treated patients can lead 'full life'

Dr Pinto is now being cross examined by the prosecution. Prosecutor Stuart Trimmer: “Myasthenia gravis tends to affect the facial region, the neck? Dr Pinto: “Yes that’s right” Trimmer: If someone needs to breath can this affect their airways? Dr Pinto: “Yes” Trimmer: “But general life tasks, ordinary things?” Dr Pinto: “If Myasthenia gravis is well treated patients can lead an active and full life.” Trimmer: “Is there any evidence Stewart was not well treated?” Dr Pinto: “No”

Thank goodness for that.

Court takes early break

Trimmer: “So this is not the deterioration of the muscles but a condition that affects the control of the muscles?” Dr Pinto: “Yes, but if you rest you can regenerate some of that strength” Trimmer: “Myasthenia gravis has nothing to do with emotion?” Dr Pinto: “That is correct” Trimmer: “It doesn’t affect the brain and emotionally how you may react to things? “It doesn’t affect how you’re telling the truth or not?” Dr Pinto: “That is correct” Dr Pinto confirms that Stewart had severe Myasthenia gravis over the first decade of treatment, then long term treatment thereafter for the condition. There will now be a break until 2pm, when the next witness will be called.

remember all the discussion we had about his condition, his sick pay, possible benefits and his inability to work - a few threads back?

Stewart would not have been expected to refrain from activity
Trimmer: “So someone in his position correctly treated you wouldn’t expect them to refrain from gardening, or walking or?” Dr Pinto: “No” Trimmer: “But there is no suggestion that he was ever told ‘you can’t do this and you can’t do that’?” Dr Pinto: “That is correct” Trimmer: “He was able to conduct a full and healthy lifestyle?” Dr Pinto: “That is correct”

So why has he been skiving off on illness benefits for the best part of his adult life?

Hopefully the majority verdict would deal with that. If it's 1% of the population (or 3% in total) more than 2 out of 12 jurors would be misfortunate indeed.

Unfortunately there is higher percentage of what I like to call "gullible idiots" who might just believe him

Helen Bailey murder trial resumes with new witness

The case has been called back on, jurors are coming into the court room. The next witness is Dr Ashwin Pinto, a consultant neurologist.

Expert in Stewart's auto-immune condition gives evidence

Dr Pinto said he has expertise in Myasthenia gravis, the illness of the defendant. He said that Myasthenia gravis, an auto-immune disease, deteriorates with exercise. He tells jurors: “Myasthenia gravis causes droopiness of eyelids and double vision. “It can cause significant weakness of the muscles that control facial expression, muscles that control speech and swallowing, and also affects neck, shoulder and arm muscles in particular. “Myasthenia gravis also affects the diaphragm, which controls breathing, so patients can get difficulty with breathing and increasing breathlessness.”

Didn't Aristotle Onassis have this?

I find it very hard to believe anyone would be gullible enough to fall for his evidence though, it's really been way beyond even barely believable hasn't it? And the special appearance yesterday morning just put the tin lid on it IMO.

She did say the TLC was wearing thin, so sounds like he overdid it.

Well at least if he gets off, he'll lose his blue badge after what's been revealed today!

LOL I was told not to work. I think it is standard for a Neurologist to say this as they want to keep their patients in a good strong state to avoid crises. However, he could have worked in a non-stressful, desk job, possibly part-time. I did. IS apparently likes the idea of not working.

Dr Ashwin Pinto claims Ian Stewart was able to conduct a "full and healthy lifestyle" despite his Myasthenia gravis:

Undoubtedly but I can't imagine he did it at the outset of the romance. I assume at that early stage he was mr macho, can-do, knight in shining armour etc.

Just looking for the evidence from the DIY mate on how sickness affected his inability to do the DIY.

here's some of his evidence from last week

“During the work on the house I would find myself tired and unable to do anything quicker than my dad. “I realised something was wrong then (1994/95). “Oliver was born the same year, in May 1995. Diane was taking medication for epilepsy. “We moved into the house, it wasn’t finished but it was liveable. “I started to notice more and more things going wrong with my health. What really bought it to a head is that I was trying to hammer a nail in, and on the third bang my arm just wouldn’t move. “That’s what drove me to go to hospital. I was diagnosed almost instantly with Myasthenia gravis. “It is an auto-immune disease where the body is attacking itself. They gave me steroids. “A week later I was taken into intensive care because of the breathing problems. “The doctor’s don’t know what causes Myasthenia gravis - there is no known cure for it.”

“I was operated upon. That was my worst time ever in hospital. “Eventually I was discharged. “I was off work due to the tiredness and weakness. “With this [my illness] you just feel totally done in. “My muscles in my face sometimes don’t work, I have no idea when I’m smiling or not. “I have a more passive expression than most.”

Stewart said he later had a cancer scare, and was convinced to have another operation. “I went back into Papworth Hospital and had the same operation. Very annoyingly all it was was scar tissue. “It wasn’t cancer, thankfully. “Myasthenia gravis is quite rare, every time I end up in Addenbrooke’s Hospital they use me as a demonstration. Stewart said one of his lungs only has 60 per cent capacity, adding “compared to my other breathing problems that’s not good.”

Stewart was unable to return to work after severe attack

Stewart also said effectively he only has one vocal chord as a result of complications with his operations. “I’ve been in intensive care five or six times. Generally, I was down there because they’re so concerned. “I went back to work and we went on holiday. I had a severe attack and ended up in intensive care in France. “I was flown back to Addenbrooke’s and was in intensive care there for a while. “Following my discharge from there I never went back to work again on advice from the doctors. “It’s not known what brings my Myasthenia gravis on.”

“I’ve had a blue (disabled) badge when driving for 18/19 years. “Sadly Diane died on June 25, 2010. “I was left in charge of the two boys. They were 18 and 15 at that time. “I was given a book on how to cope and deal with grief from a bridesmaid at Diane’s wedding. “In the book was also a website name for a forum for widows and widowers to share their feelings. “It was a very open forum and it was very good. “I went to an event in London, 30 of us shared experiences of grieving face to face.”

one would have expected Mr Flint to have re-drawn our attention to his hugely reduced lung function, IF it were true, what he had said on the stand , last week

Oh my... would it be going too far to rush out and get a little tiny dachsy in memory of Boris?

My youngest wants one; he is outraged about Boris.

On another theme, I hate the way that (for commercial reasons, we know) when you get on the Cambridge News site you have to avoid some sliding car or similar advert to click quickly enough to avoid that audio of the ghastly lying IS voice reporting Helen missing, or a court reporter you've heard already (or know what they will say).
