UK UK - John McNeil, last sighting on Stanley Crescent, Perth around 9.10pm, 27 Dec 2024

Officers searching for missing man John McNeil have stopped and spoken to drivers and pedestrians in Perth a week on from when he was last seen.

Numerous people were spoken to in the area of Stanley Crescent, Crieff Road and Viewfield Place between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Friday, 3 January, 2025.

This last confirmed sighting of John is on Stanley Crescent, Perth around 9.10pm on Friday, 27 December, 2024.

He is described as white, around 5ft 10 inches in height with an average build and short, grey hair.

When last seen, he was wearing a work style navy jacket, navy trousers, light blue shirt, navy tie and black shoes. He may also be wearing a dark-coloured hat and carrying a rucksack.

Inspector Duncan said: “In a bid to jog memories, we had officers out in the last known place John was, around the same time a week on.

“While continue our enquiries and assess any information gained, I would again urge anyone who may have seen John since Friday, 27 December, to please get in touch.”

A watercourse, known as The Lade, runs through the area in which John was last seen. It appears to be artificially channeled, but I don't know how deep or how powerful it is (nor whether these factors vary according to recent rainfall). Worryingly, though, it appears to pass right under the city centre via a culvert. You would normally expect a culvert like this to be grated to prevent the ingress of large items, such as branches and tree trunks, but I don't know if grates are present in this case. I would hope the police have searched the culvert for John's body, but I have seen no mention of it.

I live 11 miles away , I will be going to Perth on Saturday (hopefully he will be found by then ) I shall pace the Lade area and take pictures to try and give a feel of the place.

There is sad news coming through about John. Police Scotland Tayside have issued the following statement:

Around 11.25 am on Tuesday, 7 January, 2025 police were made aware of a body found near to the River Tay to the south of Perth.

Formal identification is still to take place however the family of missing man John McNeil, 52, has been informed.

The death is being treated as unexplained but is not believed to be suspicious and enquiries are ongoing. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
