This is one jury I wouldn't want to serve on.

I totally agree - I have no idea what the right outcome here is - the family need help, I worry about Abigail's child, but don't think they are evil - Social Services should have been involved

Jordan's 25-year-old sister Abigail Burling was found not guilty of manslaughter, as well as an alternative charge of causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable person.

I think the jury reached the same conclusion that I had; I could see the other sides to it in the discussions on this thread though. Nobody's won here; I hope they don't end up with really long sentences as a result, as I don't think it was necessarily malicious, just very neglectful. They'd have been better off admitting to a lesser charge and using mental difficulties for mitigation instead of bringing it to court and exposing all the inconsistencies in the whole story (I hesitate to say "lies", although not all that was told could possibly be the truth... but I can see it's very possible for Dawn at least to be like myself when it comes to answering accurately under pressure).

No winners in this, no matter the result it was a very sad story, and although I think this probably is the right result, they come across as so troubled that I doubt much good will come of it except perhaps getting the whole family much higher on social services' radar to hopefully prevent any repeat in the future.

Wow. I was just thinking about this and was leaning towards a mistrial.

I guess the jury weren't as conflicted as some of us were.

I agree with Kasmeer that I don't think long sentences would achieve much.

I really hope the full sentencing remarks are published.

It looks like the judge has a lot if flexibility when it comes to sentencing:

If you have been accused of manslaughter, the consequences under UK law are severe, ranging from:

  1. A prison sentence – typically ranging between 2-10 years
  2. A suspended term of imprisonment (the sentence can be suspended for up to two years and the offender is given the chance to comply with up to 12 requirements set by the court)
  3. Community service
The sentence will depend on the specific circumstances of the offence.
