UK UK - Kate Bushell, 14, Exeter, Devon, 15 Nov 1997

Triple killer David Burgess was released on licence in May 1996 after spending almost 30 years in prison for a double child murder in Beenham. Following several incidents of drunkenness & violence he was recalled to prison but failed to report in. He was living rough in South West England til February 1998 when he was caught after an armed robbery.
Could this be more of his wrongdoing?

"In November 1997 Kate Bushell, 14, was murdered while walking her dog in Exwick on the outskirts of Exeter, Devon."

"He stressed that no firm evidence links Burgess to the three murders but that he may be "of interest" to those forces. Thames Valley will also speak to the National Police Improvement Agency, which works with all UK forces."

Burgess killed a 17 year old girl, and then two 9 year olds, in the late 60s.

He wasn't convicted of his first murder until a DNA review many years later.

He was released from his original murder sentence in 1996, and became a suspect in the Melanie Hall case.

similar but it seems police hav either ruled it out or just not made a link.
No DNA match for Lyn Bryant, and he was back in custody when Lyn was murdered... but IIRC was still on the run when Kate was killed a year earlier.

A prisoner on the run fits in quite well with the man seen camping rough near where Kate lived.

i think she probebly may have gone into the feild to answer the call of nature and that would explian why her trouses were down and how she dident see her killer come up behind her
It's possible, but I'm not sure she would have walked so far away from the dog.

KB was dog sitting for a neighbour, and wouldn't have known how the dog would have reacted to being left alone.

More likely IMO that she was forced there, and for me the trousers suggest a sexual element to the murder.

the police said there was no sign of sex assault and she was taken by suprise so that suggests the killer couldn't of pulled her trousers down she must of done it herself and the only reason i can think of for herdoing that is she was about to have a pee

can you quote the bit about being taken by surprise pls?

i cant quite it because its in the Crimewatch videos i posted
ive noticed that about some quotes from wiki. ill check those vids at some pojnt. u know if they are all devoted to her case? or got a mix like normal cw?

The police certainly have strong suspicions, but I'm not sure if it's ever been confirmed as definitely linked to the Bryant murder.

I don't think there's DNA in the Bushell case, so in terms of 'links' it seems like the mass DNA testing was for comparison with the profile from the Bryant case.
Actually, re reading my notes, I think the early mass DNA testing was just in comparison to samples on items found near Kate.
The crime scene was fairly near to a lovers lane type spot. There had also possibly been people camping out in the area.

The police haven't ruled out a sexually motivated attack. Kate was definitely taken by surprise, but that doesn't mean she wasn't also taken to a nearby secondary location. The trousers could have been removed for staging, or the killer's own reasons, after the murder.

Here is a walkthrough of her route into the field. made by devon police.

at roughly 4.50 witnesses saw her on the lane with a the blue car man in the layby with his back to them, they were driving towards her, at 4.55 witnesses saw this same car unattended and at 5.30 it is believed gemma the dog she walking was seen by itself.

Here is an interesting part, between 5 and 7 a man was seen running in a field adjacent to the crime scene and away from the crime scene this fits with the description of the perpetrator being local. he was not in running gear but was running with speed. There is the potential he saw the body and didn't want to be connected to it.

can you quote the yt video pls, cant follow the link but checked thevalid one out.

5 key bits of info.
1. police are convinced someone knows who did this or suspects them.
2. believe the suspect had local knowledge.
3. the orange fibres seen on the style and on KB's body.
4. the running man seen running into exwick estate
5. the blue car man.

So the orange fibres, local knowledge and likely experience in the military or in slaughtering animals most likely sheep. exeter and surrounding areas has a long history of sheep farming

Table 1 shows the changes in the national, regional and county distribution offarm types. It will be seen that Devon remains a strong livestock area, with almost three quarters of the holdings being Cattle and Sheep, or dairying.

what says the orange fibres didn't belong to someone who worked in the abbatoirs/farms and got the orange clothing from there? if its just generic workwear its likely cheap so likely to be stocked. also makes sense as a saftey precaution. busy farm, tractors going round so safety gear is needed.

also makes more sense for this individual to have worked in livestock rather than in the military and ofc lots of abbatoirs local to that area. the police think that due to the wound inflicted on KB which makes sense, the way the coroner described it it was almost a practiced action. much more likely a farm than the military.

Thank you for your continued interest concerning the Kate Bushell murder enquiry.
A number of issues have been raised around the orange fibre evidence highlighted by the investigation team.
The orange fibre line of enquiry was always a priority for the investigation team in 1997 and a huge amount of work was conducted, which included a number of actions around the railways and whether workers wore this type of high visibility workwear.
It was ascertained that workwear used on the railways was not the same as that shown during the current media campaign. Likewise, extensive work was done around CCTV local to the area including the railways.
The information regarding the fibres has always been in the public domain but it was the decision of the Senior Investigating Officer Paul Burgan to release it in its current format in order to generate interest from the public who could hopefully recall persons wearing such garments in 1997.
Thank you for your continued support.
