Three arrested in missing person investigation as detectives appeal for information

Detectives, investigating the whereabouts of missing person Kayleigh Weston, have arrested three people in connection with her disappearance.

A 30-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent, a 46-year-old man from Birmingham and a 36-year-old woman from Stoke-on-Trent have all been detained on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. They remain in police custody at this time.

Investigators are still concerned for Kayleigh’s safety and well-being, with the 33-year-old last seen in Longton town centre on Thursday 22 April.

Kayleigh is described as white, around 5ft 4ins tall, of thin build, with long brown hair which is sometimes worn up in a bun.

She has tattoos on her arms and her neck. The tattoo on her neck is of an elephant with the letter ‘E’ alongside.

She was last seen wearing the distinctive Superdry coat pictured, grey jeans and trainers, and there have previously been reported sightings of Kayleigh in the Fenton area of Stoke-on-Trent.

She may be sleeping rough.

Anyone who has seen Kayleigh or has information that could assist with the investigation is asked to call 101 or send us a private message, quoting incident number 286 of 23 April.

I think it’s fair to say Kayleigh has had her problems. Someone who has been banned for keeping pets because of starving them. However she does not deserve this. Let’s hope the arrests lead to some justice for Kayleigh.

Police found the body of a mum who had been missing for nearly a month in a wooded area after her distinctive coat provided a vital clue.

Officers made a breakthrough after door-to-door-inquiries led them to the last person who is thought to have seen Kayleigh Weston alive. An inquest heard Steven Dale then took officers to Dorcas Drive, Blurton, by a bramble-strewn wasteland where they had parted company. Police began combing the secluded spot and, two days later on May 20 last year, a search and rescue team came across a partly decomposed body huddled next to a fence.

It transpired Steven had earlier sold Kayleigh's Superdry coat for £10 to buy drugs.

A forensic pathologist would later conclude Kayleigh’s death was due to severe ketoacidosis, caused by hypothermia, which in turn was caused by drug intoxication. She had displayed a typical feature of hypothermia – mistakenly believing she was hot and had taken off her T-shirt.

Kayleigh’s father Malcolm Weston said he’d been so worried sick he had repeatedly called police for help. “It was like she had just vanished off the face of the earth,” he added. He and his wife Lorraine had last seen their daughter on April 15 when they went shopping together. She had been smiling and joking. But then Kayleigh didn’t turn up for a pre-arranged meeting with her son two days later.

The official missing person inquiry began on April 23, with Kayleigh initially classed as at medium risk and later scaled up to high risk. Kayleigh, of Grosvenor Road, Newcastle, had been wearing a distinctive Superdry pink and purple coat. Her family say she was so attached to the jacket that she was rarely without it.

Detective Constable Tracey Gascoigne told the inquest that checks revealed she had last used her mobile phone on April 22 and hadn’t withdrawn any money since April 23.

Police scanned CCTV, which showed her in Longton town centre on the morning of April 24. She was also picked up on camera in Heron Street and Dorcas Drive. As they went door-to-door, they spoke to a resident who recognised the coat in her photograph.

“She said her partner had bought her that coat for a birthday present,” added DC Gascoigne. It turned out to be the very same item of clothing, which Steven Dale had taken off Kayleigh and sold several days later for £10 so he could buy monkey dust.

Police interviewed Steven on May 16 and he said he’d only met Kayleigh a few weeks earlier. He thought her name was Rachel.

They had spent April 24 together and had taken monkey dust. But then she had started to become unwell and was ‘physically shaking and dehydrating’ as they were walking near Dorcas Drive.

Steven told police he went to buy her a cold drink and then tried to seek help by knocking on doors, asking for someone to call 999. He then went to his sister’s house nearby and her partner followed Steven in the direction of Dorcas Drive. DC Gascoigne said: “He saw an ambulance driving along the A50 and presumed it was for her, so he left.”

It emerged at the inquest that no ambulance had been called for Kayleigh. It would be weeks before she was finally discovered.

Detective Sergeant Ben Thomas, who went to the scene after the body was found, said her partially-clothed state had raised particular concerns. She also had two fractured ribs, which may have been caused by falling on an object.

But he told the hearing: “There was no evidence of trauma or assault.”

Toxicology tests revealed the presence of monkey dust and phenocyclidine, along with a small amount of cannabis.

North Staffordshire assistant coroner Mark Henley concluded it was a drug-related death.

Speaking after the inquest, Kayleigh’s mum Lorraine, from Cheddleton, said: “She was loved by everybody. She loved her son and her son loved her.

“She was happy go lucky and just loved life.”
