Kenneth Jones: Family of missing Glenrothes teenager renew appeal 20 years on from his disappearance | Fife Today

“The night before he was all smiles, and happy playing video games with his uncle. There was no suggestion he was in any way troubled, that makes it all the more difficult to fathom.

And she points to the fact that Kenneth, aged 18 at the time, left home on that early morning of November 3, 1998, lightly dressed and in gym shoes despite the freezing temperatures, which suggests this wasn’t a planned disappearance by him.”

''In a strange coincidence, another young man – 23-year-old Allan Bryant – went missing in Glenrothes, exactly 15 years after Kenneth disappeared.
Allan was last seen leaving a nightclub in the town – no trace of him has been found since.
The date is the only known link between the cases.''

''October 30 2024 – Police confirm new investigation

Police confirmed they were reinvestigating the case.
DI Chris Mill said: “Police Scotland undertake regular reviews of unsolved missing person cases and there have always been unanswered questions around Kenneth’s disappearance, with family reporting that it is out of character for Kenneth not to remain in contact.''

His family don't live there any more. They live a few streets away now. Wow didn't expect this news. I live not too far from Glenrothes. Thinking of his loved ones.

Detectives investigating the unsolved disappearance of Glenrothes teenager Kenneth Jones are searching the garden at the family’s former home.

Officers from Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team (MIT) descended on the house on Ancrum Court in the Macedonia area of the Fife town on Thursday shortly after 9am.

Plain-clothed and uniformed officers are currently at the house with much of the police activity focused on the rear of the property.

Courier reporter Neil Henderson is at the scene. He said police were visible in the back garden of the property where Kenneth Jones lived before going missing.

Experts from Keele University’s school of geography, geology and environment have been assisting police in the search of the garden.

Ground scanning equipment as well as a metal detector were seen being taken into the property.

Kenneth Jones was 18 when he went missing from his home in Glenrothes at around 7.30am on November 3, 1998.

Despite a huge probe and public appeals – including a computer-generated image showing how he may have aged – Kenneth has never been found and his whereabouts remain a mystery.

The Courier revealed in October 2024 that detectives were re-examining the original case files into his disappearance.

In early 2025, a fresh investigation into Kenneth’s disappearance was then handed over to MIT detectives to establish whether or not Kenneth is still alive and what happened to him.

1,150 inquries since Glenrothes teenager’s 1998 disappearance

The MIT is part of Police Scotland’s Specialist Crime Division.

It is responsible for investigating all murders as well as large-scale and complex criminal investigations.

Police revealed in December that 1,150 inquiries have been made or identified by officers in its investigation into Kenneth’s disappearance.

Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Pleasance said: “Officers from Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Teams are leading the re-investigation with the assistance of numerous resources, including divisional officers and expert witnesses.

“Our searches at Ancrum Court form part of our investigation as we work to find any new information that could assist our inquiries.

“We remain committed to establishing the full circumstances of what happened to Kenneth and we are keeping an open mind.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have any information, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward.

“It’s essential we find out what happened to Kenneth to bring his family some much needed closure.”

The Courier has put together a timeline of key events detailing Kenneth Jones’ disappearance and the subsequent police investigation
