Just to clarify that a train guard and security guard are not the same thing. The guard would not be armed nor formally trained to defend; they are there to check tickets, answer passenger questions and liaise with the driver.

Dedswell Drive has some lovely large properties with big gardens. Easy to hide and access to fields. I guess the helicopters are out.

At that time of the day (off peak) this train would have been very quiet as this is the stopping service from Guildford that takes over 1 hour to get to Waterloo, as opposed to the fast service which takes only 38 minutes. It leaves Guildford with only a few passengers on it, so I doubt there were even any witnesses or anyone to help. This train does have a guard however it has at least 8-10 coaches so the guard most likely won't have been in the coach where the incident happened. The guard was lucky not to be the victim, if reports of this being a "frenzied random attack" are true. My thoughts and prayers go to the family of the victim and the train crew who had to deal with the aftermath of this terrible incident.

Welcome, Countess!! Do you know the village at all? Anywhere obvious he could head to? Looking at a map it seems about 5 miles as the crow flies to Guildford centre, does that sound about right?

Article on the Mirror website says "Witnesses said that punches were thrown in the "vicious fight" before the victim was stabbed in the neck and died at the scene."

I wonder if they got into a disagreement over something, it kicked off and unfortunately for this poor guy the nutter that he was fighting with had a knife on him.

The only way back to London or Guildford is via another South Western Railway service so he may have boarded another train somewhere further along the line.

According to The Sun Online, a witness says she saw a suspicious man in a field in Clandon, she was out walking her dog and he accosted her, he told her "i am in a lot of trouble" then accidentally dropped his hat and ran away... Police forensics now have the hat and are examining it. Apparently there was blood on the hat....

Thankfully this woman was not hurt. This man may or may not be the perpetrator but this must have been frightening.

Not sure if it means they were known to each other. Certainly there was some sort of argument beforehand so perhaps it means it's not mental health related.

Or not directly, in the sense of being a psychotic break. But mental health issues could conceivably have exacerbated perpetrator's aggression in what might not otherwise have escalated so badly, or caused paranoid delusions which led to the confrontation. We don't know enough yet.
