No way IMO.

I don't think it will be long before he is charged with her abduction/murder, personally. I think they have more evidence than we can know about.
I think it is a very strong possibility.

The slower down GIF looks to me like he goes to put her in the car but the door isn’t open wide enough to lift her in so he rests her while he opens the door more then puts her in as u see that same shadow shape of what looks like legs come into view twice, it doesn’t look like he’s throwing a bag to me, more like repositioning while trying to fit her in the front seat, but she’s clearly not hopping in there she seems to slump :(
'Rests' her that's the word. That's exactly what I sense is going on. And then she's just plonked onto the seat. She bounces as her weight settles, then tilts a little towards the driver's seat... in a semi-conscious sort of way.

When trying to second guess what may happen when this guy is questioned, we need to remember that as far as solicitors are concerned its all one big game.

Yes IF he says "no comment" to everything now this would count against him IF he ever found himself wishing to answer the same questions in a trial
But this overlooks the biggest likelyhood in this type of case.

Far and away the most common scenario would be for the accused to give no evidence at trial

Next are the large percentage of "bang to rights" defendants who maintain a not guilty stance right up until their first court appearance where they suddenly profess their guilt thus avoiding a trial at all

In his situation most solicitors would see him as having little to gain from saying much, particularly when full evidential disclosure from the police probably has not yet happened

Sometimes the suspect just gives a statement to the police which his solicitor has helped him write. After that, he says nothing.

  • #525
You don't bounce when you calmly get into a car and sit down.
She clearly bounces.
That makes me convinced she was more or less thrown onto the seat.
I bounce when I’m drunk!

This is different from the US- you do not have to put forth any defense or explanation and this cannot be held against you later if you decide to tell the story in court. Only what you do say can be used against you, therefore, if you're guilty the best thing to do is shut-up.

The fact the video skips out around a minute and a half of time from 00.05 speaks volumes to me, it only resumes with the zoomed in images what happened in that missing minute or so?

Hi new here but been reading from the start..

Pure speculation on my part but someone earlier mentioned it looked like the guy on the bicycle was wearing a balaclava. Can anyone see that? I've tried slowing it down and to me it looks like he is in fact wearing something dark on his face but I don't know if it's a beard, a hat, a veil or if it's just the dark playing tricks on me.

With someone claiming that on the same night a girl was chased down the street by a guy in a balaclava and then a fake taxi tried to get her in their car I just thought it was worth mentioning...Has that been verified as actually having taken place or just a rumour? Plus there were reports from a club owner of a fake taxi trying to pick up people too, right?

Speculation..what if PR/person seen in CCTV and the bicycle person were working together..? Had seen Libby from the main street in distress so pulled around into the cul de sac to park to stake her out as a potential person to abduct?

The four lights flashing to me looks like a signal to the guy on the bicycle further down the street to come up and approach her whilst PR/CCTV guy sat sideways in his car so he could still see down the street to the corner. Then the Bicycle guy possibly doing the talking/persuasion with Libby as he might be English or have a better grasp of the English language? Then bringing her around the corner to PR/CCTV guy.

I don't know, just all speculation of course but those two and then four flashing lights seem quite coincidental to me when the bike guy then rides past just a little bit later..then PR/CCTV guy goes off camera in the same direction, presumably to help get the person into the other side of the car.

There hasn't been any mention of a bag, but she was wearing a leather jacket. If she had taken it off for any reason he could have thrown that in after her?
It was Baltic that day, no way would she have shed her jacket, unless done so as she got in the car.

But he's not touting for anything, he's sitting have a smoke, how is he going to get any fares when no one can see him/know he's a taxi? He doesn't appear to be looking up for possible customers, do illegal taxi drivers randomly approach people on the street on spec, is there even much foot traffic in that area at that time of night?

I'm playing devils advocate a bit, to me it's more likely that he's waiting for someone for a pre-arranged lift.

JMO

Well the street is slightly angled towards Cott road, I think - or at least it's more visible approaching from that direction than from Beverley Road. So anyone walking from the pubs there would definitely see him, and he them. He'd just have to stand up and shout "need a taxi?"

It's probably not the ideal place for footfall at that day/time, no, but again, but it's a trade off when you're running the risk of being pulled over and fined by the police, having your insurance nullified, being prosecuted for driving without insurance, having points on your licence, etc. You'd want to be somewhere accessible to anyone you flag down, but not overly conspicuous to the police. That street is a dead end at the Beverley Road end too, so if any police car from Beverley Rd spotted him in the act and wanted to tail him, they'd have to cut him off further around the corner on Cottingham Road. I assume if he was perturbed by a police patrol he'd just jump back in and casually drive off. Bit hard to do on the main road where the police would just give chase.

Agreed

But what is good about the law reform is it stops the kind of silliness we see in the US

So for example it would be hard for him to testify at trial that she jumped out of the cab and ran off into the fields without paying if he adopts silence in questioning

More likely he already gave the police a dumb story in any event

Someone a few pages back said that their friends daughter lives on the street that the CCTV was from. And that the police searched their entire house a few days ago, including the freezer under the bed and in cupboards.

If the police thought Libby had got in the car, why would they be searching houses next to where the car was seen?
Exactly my question?

I just wish in these situations young lasses would feel confident enough to go into a close by business or bar and be looked after until the police can arrive

Not that police are a taxi service but it was known in my hometown that if you were truly stuck the police would rather help you out than see you rolling round the city in a state in the dead of night

Especially for young ladies

It’s a pity Maybe she did not know the neighbors that well in the area with her being at university surly someone is not gonna turn away a young girl in the cold

Re watching the released CCTV footage I thought something was odd but couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

Then I realised, the lights flash 4 times but then the man appears from Libby’s direction and opens the door and roles a cigarette. Does this mean he could have already been talking to her ? Could he have parked there to pop across the road to Sainsbury’s due to the fact there is no on road parking outside? He lived in the area so it’s quite possible that he did this before? He could have spotted her on the way back to his car and gone and rolled a cigarette and thought then about going to approach her ? just a theory

I’m usually as tough as old boots but this video made me feel sick. I think he saw her passed out. Was sitting having a cigarette while either he or accomplice (on bike?) scoped out area for any other cars/ passers by. I think that is Libby and she is unconscious and thrown into the back seat. God when I think back to some of the situations I put myself in under the influence of alcohol in my twenties, illegal taxis, getting out at wrong addresses. It makes me glad to be alive. Excellent police work on cctv front. Will be interesting to see if cyclist comes forward.

Been following since the 1st thread , but this is only 2nd contribution (ever !) So hello everyone . Well done to all others here , it's interesting reading thoughts of others. This case strikes home with me in particular as I have a 21 yr old daughter at uni in Glasgow.
The police seem to have several pieces of the jigsaw already and are drip feeding bits ( like this CCTV of man in car , blus gates ) when they need to. I think it looks like someone getting into passenger seat , not lifted , but getting in voluntarily . The car drives off ,but is that not towards dead end ??? If so , either car stops nearby or comes back down past this same CCTV minutes later?
new to this sleuthing hope I'm not sounding silly .

No the dead end is to the left of the camera. It goes onto the main road (Beverley Road), but is blocked off by the pavement and bollards. The direction his car is pointing in goes round the corner and out onto Cottingham Road.

  • #538
Exactly. They so have!

Do you think this is footage of Libby entering the car?

I think it looks very much like a girl with long straight hair getting into the car/being put into the car.

  • #539
I really think he was touting for fares as an illegal cabbie. It makes sense to me that he was lurking at that corner for folk leaving the nearby Haworth arms at closing time. It even makes sense that he went to his car to role a ciggie between waves of people exiting the pub. It is hard to roll standing up, especially if windy and cold.

That was me that posted about that.
I do think it looks like something is over the cyclist's face and thought maybe they were working together based on the reports of a previous incident on Newland avenue.

Clubs did put out a warning after about the fake taxi and someone posted a picture of a man running down a street wearing a Balaclava. I was going to put a link to the stuff but I think it's against forum rules because it was on social media.

Also it's hard to know what's fact and what's rumour on social media.
