How will the sentence be calculated for rape and manslaughter? I thought rape could in some circumstances be given life?

It can but I bet the minimum tariff wont be very high.

Thank you as always @jamjim - all your work is much appreciated

Oh he will absolutely. He will be smirking all the way back to his prison cell.

I find it so disappointing that the Judge is offering this option now, rather than waiting to see if the Jury can reach a guilty of murder verdict ( which I believe they could have done ). I think having the lighter option available might make them waver and give him the lower charge.
I find it so sad, and I don't think this is justice for Libby. As Mrazda said, he is the reason she is dead and not setting up home with her boyfriend and enjoying her first job, post university. He is the reason her family will never see her marry or have children or travel round the world or achieve something wonderful in her work life.
I do hope we deport him back to Poland as soon as his sentence is finished. And, equally, I feel very sorry for the Polish people who will be faced with this vile predator in their lives.

Yes me too. Would have been better for them to deliberate the murder charge for a while first as they have now got a compromise (well that is how I see it) they have sat there for weeks and weeks I would have liked to see them consider the charges in front of them first before another option was on the table.

10 years for manslaughter - but I see @Skigh saying the Judge can still impose a life sentence - good!

Am patiently awaiting the verdict with you all....

I dont think he would have been charged with anything at all if that had been the case.

Even if they knew she was last seen getting in his car and going to the park and 2 arrived but only 1 left and the screams? I suppose he wouldn’t have had to admit to sex. But he’d still have been the last person to be seen with her before she vanished forever. Who knows!

Rape – Sentencing

I would have thought he will get a hefty sentence

Question - would this sentence be "added" to his 8 1/2 years or just "include" the 8 1/2 years he is convicted of?

edited to add - I let a Mod know we are now on VERDICT WATCH!!

Yeh i suppose so. And I wasn't considering the cases where there has been a guilty of murder verdict with no body.

But then again if people are struggling on here with the verdict with a body. They would struggle even more with no DNA and him saying he just left her there.

Fingers crossed the jury know way way more and can come to the right decision.

It seems odd that they came back after lunch and her not explaining manslaughter had then "occurred to her"

I think one of the jurors asked the question.

Not sure at all

Thank you once again for the updates @jamjim.

This case didn’t bring me to Websleuths (that was the very sad Alesha Macphail case) but Libby and her family have been in my thoughts ever since she went missing. I hope the jury come to the right decision and that PR won’t ever be able to assault or kill another woman again.

Same here. The case that brought me here has not gone to trial yet (Mollie Tibbetts) so Libby’s is the first one I followed from the first thread and the trial. It is so nerve wracking.

Thank you for joining us and caring about someone in our country. Most of us here will never forget Libby. You’ve done well to keep up with the time difference!

No - unfortunately - it will all run concurrently.

So, the only figure that is going to count is the highest one, which will be for the manslaughter charge.
He might get 16 - 18 years, which will commute to 9.

The word occurred could be the way the journalist phrased her remark rather than her actual words.

I cannot see her sitting there and saying ' by the way ,it has just occurred to me you could consider manslaughter'.

I agree a kick in the teeth for her family. And she won't get justice.

And he will kill again. I'm not sure whether here or Poland
