Last sighting of Lindsay alive
Lindsay Birbeck continued walking down Burnley Road and the last sighting of her alive was at 4:06 pm from a CCTV camera on Burnley Road.

Mr McLachlan told the jury: “The prosecution case is that Lindsay Birbeck was killed somewhere within the area of The Coppice. However, we are unable to say exactly where she was killed.”

Lindsay's jacket sighted
Sometime after 4:15 pm, Judith and Martin Bibby went to The Coppice to walk their dog.

Judith Bibby noticed what looked like a red anorak hanging on the fence on the path side.

Lindsay Birbeck’s Rab jacket was purple on the outside with what appeared to be red bits on it with a red lining.

Messages to Lindsay not answered
At 4:30 pm, Lindsay Birbeck’s friend Sharon Griffiths sent her a WhatsApp message. It got through but it was never opened.

Mr McLachlan said: “It is the Prosecution case that Lindsay Birbeck had been killed by this stage.”

Just before 6 pm Sarah Birbeck and her boyfriend arrived at Lindsay Birbeck’s home on Burnley Road. Sarah Birbeck tried the door without success.

She phoned her mum without success.

Defendant's movements after Lindsay's disappearance
At 6:19 pm, the defendant was observed on CCTV crossing over Burnley Road from the Whitakers Arms side (The Coppice side).

He walked past a house on Burnley Road, Accrington with his hands in his pocket, hood up, zip slightly down and ‘appeared to be bare chested’.

Mr McLachland said the cord from his tracksuit bottoms appeared to be undone and he ‘appeared to have wet knees’.

He told the jury: “It is the Prosecution case that Lindsay Birbeck was dead by this stage and that the defendant had killed her”.

The defendant continued on the route from Burnley Road in the direction of his home.

Defendant reappeared with black rucksack
At 6:49 pm, the defendant was seen on CCTV emerging from brambles at the rear of Isothane on Newhouse Road.

At 6:55 pm, he was observed on Whitewell Road but this time with a black rucksack on his back.

Mr McLachlan said he was heading back in the direction of ‘where Lindsay’s body must have been’.

He told the jury: “He must have had something in his rucksack to assist him in some way in relation to Lindsay Birbeck’s body.”

50 minutes later
At 7:48 pm the defendant emerged from the direction of the grassed area on Burnley Road. He still had the rucksack with him.

He crossed Burnley Road and entered Accrington Cemetery. He then exited the cemetery side gate onto Whitewell Road and walked in the direction of his home.

He then came back again from that direction 37 minutes later.

Now pulling a blue wheelie bin
At 8:28 pm, he was observed walking up Whitewell Road towards Burnley Road.

Mr McLachlan told the jury he still had the rucksack but was now pulling a blue wheelie bin.

He said: “That wheelie bin would be used at a later stage to move Lindsay Birbeck..”

Wheelie bin used to 'conceal' Lindsay's body
At 11:18 pm, the defendant re-emerged from the same area behind Burnley Road

He walked down Burnley Road towards Accrington and entered the cemetery. He was carrying a rucksack.

Shortly afterwards he was observed on Whitewell Road walking away from Burnley Road. He no longer had the blue wheelie bin.

Mr McLachlan said: “It is the prosecution case that Lindsay Birbeck was dead and that the blue wheelie bin was being used to conceal her body.”

The jury is now being given a 20 minute break.

The trial will resume at 12pm when Mr McLachlan will resume his prosecution opening.
