Trial resuming with police witness
Good afternoon and welcome back to court 1 at Preston Crown Court.

Prosecutor David McLachlan QC has finished outlining the prosecution case to the jury.

Detective Sergeant David Bowler has now entered the witness box as the first prosecution witness.

He told the jury that he supervised a team of detectives examining CCTV around Accrington.

I'm hoping they have other DNA evidence to present.
I have no idea what his learning difficulties are but he seems to know about forensics. He used gloves and cut off the soles of Linsay's shoes before throwing them away. Moo.

Jury shown map of key locations
The jury is now being shown a map of the Accrington area with the key locations involved in the case.

These include:

  • the defendant’s home address
  • Lindsay Birbeck’s home on Burnley Road in Accrington
  • the Whitakers Arms pub on Burnley Road
  • the sighting of a red jacket in The Coppice
  • Accrington Cemetery on Burnley Road
  • the location within the cemetery where Lindsay Birbeck’s body was found
  • Whitewell Road next to the cemetery
  • locations where CCTV was obtained
  • the routes taken by Lindsay Birbeck and the defendant

Jury shown CCTV of Lindsay at The Mall in Blackburn
The jury are now being shown a CCTV ‘compilation’ which is 2 minutes 28 seconds long.

The first clip shows Lindsay Birbeck and her daughter arriving at The Mall in Blackburn on August 12.

Det Sgt David Bowler said there was around one hour of footage of Lindsay and her daughter at The Mall but this has been cut down for the jury to show the key parts.

I dont understand the cut off soles?
Maybe he was afraid of footprints, particles or ugh, he left a deposit on the soles of her shoes. It is strange though. Moo.

CCTV of Lindsay and Sarah at Asda in Accrington
The jury are now being shown a second CCTV compilation of Lindsay Birbeck and her daughter Sarah at the Asda store in Accrington.

They attended the store at around 1.30pm on August 12 after shopping at The Mall.

But then disposed of them in the same bag, doesnt make sense does it.
I wondered if it was to remove them easier from her body but then thought how hard would it be, surely just undoing/untying would be easier? I wonder if we will be offered possible scenarios by the prosecution at some point.

Learning disability or not. This is a chilling response from a 16yr old boy. Adolescent brains don't process risk the same as an adult brain so it's interesting that a 16yr old boy would think about reducing the evidence in this way, younger killers tend to be less methodical imo.

Text message from Sarah to Linsday
Det Sgt Bowler has told the jury that Sarah sent Lindsay a text message at around 10.30am on August 12 asking if they were going shopping for a college uniform.

Lindsay agreed to pick Sara up at around 11.30am.

LINDSAY BIRBECK'S TEXT MESSAGES

Lindsay Birbeck sent a text message to her friend Sharon Griffiths at 3.09pm on August 12.

The jury were told that Lindsay also received a text message from her new partner Rob Chaplow. She sent him a message at 3.41pm.
