Home Office pathologist Dr Naomi Carter introduced
Dr Naomi Carter, who is one of 35 Home Office forensic pathologists in the England and Wales, has now stepped into the witness box and has been introduced to the jury.
She has worked for the Home Office since 1995.
The jury have been told she carried out a post-mortem examination on Lindsay Birbeck’s body.
Clearly dead for some time'
Dr Naomi Carter attended Accrington Cemetery and formally pronounced Lindsay Birbeck dead at 8.25pm on August 25 last year.
She told the jury Lindsay was found the day before but had ‘clearly been dead for some time’.
Cause of death
Dr Carter said the post-mortem examination was carried out at Royal Blackburn Hospital.
She told the jury the cause of death was ‘neck injuries’.
Lindsay found in 'shallow depression' 1.5ft deep
Dr Carter said Lindsay was found naked in a ‘shallow depression’ about 1.5ft deep and that had been enlarged by police officers excavating around the body.
There was also a plastic sheet at the scene.
She said: “It was obvious she been dead for some time.”
The jury were told there had had also been some decomposition.

Possible bruising
Dr Carter said there may have been possible bruising on Lindsay’s arms and two parts of her back but this is not definitive.

Dr Carter said her post-mortem examination showed Lindsay Birbeck had been ‘dead since August 12 or shortly thereafter’.
Remarkable difficult' to find evidence of injuries
The jury have been told that it was ‘remarkable difficult’ to determine injuries on Lindsay Birbeck’s body.
‘No stab wounds, sharp force injuries or head injuries’
Dr Carter said despite the difficulties she was able to confirm there were ‘no stab wounds, sharp force injuries or head injuries’ on Lindsay’s body.
