GUILTY UK - Madison Wright, 30, abandoned vehicle in Basildon, found deceased, Pitsea Essex, 22 July 2022 *Arrest*

  • #61
An Essex man yelled at the courtroom as he was found guilty of murdering his partner and hiding her body in a country park. Gary Bennett was convicted unanimously by a jury in less than a day at Basildon Crown Court.

Her Honour Judge Samantha Leigh has described it as “one of the most overwhelming” cases of murder that “I have ever seen in some time, even for someone who has been involved in the criminal justice system for as long as I have” following the jury returning their verdicts in the case of Madison Wright.

[...]

However, today (March 28) the jury returned a unanimous verdict of guilty after only three hours and 38 minutes of deliberations. Following the verdict, Bennett shouted "how f.u.c.k.i.n.g dare you" to the court before being led away to the cells, and doors could be heard slamming.

The court heard that Bennett, who is set to be sentenced tomorrow at 10am at the same court, may be in handcuffs for his sentencing hearing. Judge Leigh told the court "he is going to face what he has done".

Previously in her closing speech, prosecuting barrister Tracy Ayling KC said there is “no other candidate” for the killing of Ms Wright and that the evidence from the scene of her discovery suggests Bennett dragged her body from the car to where her body was found.

She said: “To quote Casablanca, it seems of all the fence panels in all of Wat Tyler Country Park, Mr Bennett’s DNA had to be on this one. There is no other candidate for the killing of Madison Wright."

Thank you so much, MsMiniSleuth, for posting about the trial. Bennett got what he deserved, IMO, and LE and the prosecution got justice for Madison. His bad temper finally showed in court when he was found guilty.

KEY EVENT
Madison's mum 'never got to say goodbye' to her daughter

Tracy Ayling KC, prosecuting, has read out a victim impact statement on behalf of Madison Wright’s family written by her mother, Louise Bailey. Ms Bailey shared how initial interactions with the police and family were “frustrating” for her, but she now “understands they had a process to go through”.

Ms Bailey said due to the level of decomposition on her body, they “never got to say goodbye” to their daughter. She said: “Her body had deteriorated so much for us to see her. We just had to accept that it was her. I wonder if she had been found sooner [whether] this would have been different. We didn’t get a chance to say goodbye.”

'There’s always that feeling that something is missing'

Ms Bailey says her daughter was “really excited” by the prospect of moving into a new flat as it was “meant to be a new start for her”. She said: “We had to clear out the flat which was supposed to be her new home. I couldn’t just get rid of it [the possessions], she had bought it, it was hers.

“It was a very unhappy, very sad year for the whole family. We had Halloween, Christmas, Mother’s Day and birthday which we would have rather ignored as it was a reminder that something was missing. Whenever we are together there’s always that feeling that something is missing.

“We have this irrational thought in the back of our minds that she might just walk in.” Ms Bailey said Madison’s siblings are “absolutely devastated” that they “couldn’t protect her”.

10:49
'What he has done is a life sentence for us'

Ms Bailey continued: “It’s difficult to understand why someone would take the life of her. Madison should have lived to an old age. Madison could easily have lived until she was 100-years-old.

“We have so many questions about where, why and how. Did she know what was happening, was she scared, did she fight back - these are questions that we will never know the answer to.”

She added: “That one moment of pure evil has resulted in a lifetime of loss for us. No matter how many years the defendant receives in prison, what he has done is a life sentence for us. Her life has been stolen from not just her, but us.”

Defendant shakes his head in the dock

Bennett can be seen shaking his head in the dock when the judge summed up her opinion on how Madison was killed.

As the prosecution summed up her sentencing guidelines, Judge Samantha Leigh said she believed there was “an intention to kill”. She said: “The plan was if she wasn’t going to stay with him he was going to kill her”.

Bennett shook his head slightly following this comment.

10:54
Bennett 'immediately regretted' angry outburst

Mitigating, Christine Agnew KC has apologised on behalf of Bennett for his angry outburst in court yesterday. Ms Agnew said he “immediately regretted” the outburst. She said: “He asks to apologise to the judge and the members of the jury. He acted in an outrageous way and it was completely inappropriate.”

Ms Agnew said that Bennett “loved” Madison, saying: “That relationship had tragic consequences for her. It was toxic, controlling and unpleasant for her, but there is not any incident where he wished her any harm.”

Ms Agnew said there was “no evidence” of physical harm on Madison before her death. The judge is now sentencing Bennett.

'You couldn’t contain your rage and you killed her'

The judge has said Bennett is a “do as I say, do as I want” person. She said: “Previous convictions of domestic violence and clear evidence that when the jury verdict was returned you shouted at the jury ‘how dare you, there’s no evidence’ is the true character of a man who previously sat in the dock crying.”

Judge Leigh said she was satisfied the allegations Madison had made about controlling behaviour by Bennett “were true”. She said: “When there was that text exchange in the morning and when she was at work and the reality dawned on you...when you drove to her address that morning you realised that she wasn’t going to do what you wanted and was going to leave you.

“You couldn’t contain your rage and you killed her. You used her fingerprint to access her phone and bank account.” The judge said she was satisfied that Bennett had strangled Madison.

KEY EVENT
Judge delivers sentence

Judge Leigh has said there are “serious aggravating factors” in Bennett’s sentence due to him hiding her body inside the boot of her car and then hiding it under shrubbery, plus him stealing her money all will count against him.

She has sentenced him to a minimum of 21 years in prison before parole as part of a life sentence. He showed no emotion as he was taken to the cells.

11:10
'What you did was unspeakable'

As she sentenced him, Judge Leigh said the case was “haunting”. She said: “There are cases that come before the court that are the most serious kind. But every so often there are facts that shock and haunt the most experienced court, and this is one of them.

“What you did was unspeakable, you snuffed out the life of a woman you claimed was your world, all for her to have the courage to say she was leaving you.”

The judge also praised the work of the Essex Police team who investigated Madison’s death saying they built a “fantastically solid” case against Bennett. She added she was “very grateful” for how well put together the evidence was.

District Commander for Basildon releases statement

Chief Inspector Dan Mchugh, District Commander for Basildon, said:

Madison’s disappearance and tragic death has had a devastating impact on the local community in Basildon. Madison’s family and the police have received an enormous amount of support from the public and I’d like to personally thank those people for the compassion they showed.

I appreciate that whilst this trial has concluded, the details that have been revealed around the domestic abuse that Madison was victim of, may be distressing to some. Any form of violence against women and girls will not be accepted and I’m urging anyone who has been affected or need to get help to get in contact with us.

While looking for any updates on Gary Bennett's jailing, I ran across this, which I hadn't read before !! What a despicable excuse of a man and for what he did to Madison  !!

"He used fingerprint recognition from Ms Wright's body to transfer £950 from her online banking to his own account.

He sold a necklace, which her mother gave to her at the age of 16, and a bracelet, for £310 at a pawnbroker's on 23 July.

Jurors heard he was addicted to class A drugs and "owed lots of money"."
