Manchester synagogue attack latest: suspect shot after four people injured in vehicle and stabbing attack, police say

The reported stabbings come as members of the Jewish community observe Yom Kippur.

Yom Kippur is considered the holiest day in the Jewish calendar and is a time when synagogues are usually particularly busy.

Dave Rich, of the Community Security Trust (CST) - a charity that monitors antisemitism in the UK, said the day is similar to Christmas Day for Christians, but is a day of solemnity and fasting rather than celebration.

From the link:

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said one victim appeared to be a security guard who had been attacked with a knife.

He said: “It would seem that some of the security used by our colleagues in the Jewish community has really played a role here in preventing it being a worse situation.”

My home city.

Very upsetting on a day that’s meant for celebration in the Jewish community.

2 confirmed dead + 2 others fighting for their lives.

I praise Greater Manchester Police for their quick response - arrived within minutes and shot the suspect.

It's tragic that we're living in times where security has to be present outside a place of worship.
I despair.

I live very near a synagogue that has been using hired security for years. It is tragic, I agree, but perhaps not something new for the Jewish community. :( I'm in the USA.

The suspect:
  • Another person - a man believed to be the suspect - was shot by Greater Manchester Police and is also believed to be dead, officers say
  • But police say the suspect's condition cannot be confirmed due to "suspicious items on his person", with a bomb disposal unit at the scene

So much hate around. Good job by the police.

It really saddened me to see people just walking by the man who was bleeding on the ground in that video. I don't know what's wrong with some people.

I hear ya, but if help is underway (either has been called or has arrived), what are passersby supposed to do? Sometimes the most helpful thing is to get out of the way.

09:31 BST: Police receive reports of a car being driven towards members of the public outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, and a man being stabbed.

09:37: Greater Manchester Police (GMP) declare Operation Plato - which we explain here - and a major incident.

09:38: Shots are fired by GMP firearms officers. They later say a man - thought to be the suspect - has been shot and is believed to be dead, but because of "suspicious items on his person" they aren't able to confirm his condition.

09:41: Paramedics arrive at the scene and tend to injured members of the public. Police initially say four people are thought to have been injured.

10:45: Images begin appearing from the scene, with police and ambulance workers seen wearing helmets and stab proof vests, and a bomb disposal robot.

11:08: Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemns the attack and says the fact it's taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, "makes it all the more horrific".

12:11: Police confirm two people have died and a third person - believed to be the suspect - is also presumed dead. Three more people are in a serious condition, GMP add.

Police declare 'Operation Plato' - what is that?
BBC News

Police said they declared "Plato" moments after first hearing about the incident.

Operation Plato is a set of responses by the emergency services to large-scale incidents including "marauding terrorist attacks".

When police declare Operation Plato, the other emergency services such as the ambulance service then have protocols that they follow.

For example NHS trusts will activate their major incident plans.

Try to stem the bleeding. Or just comfort him. Nobody was helping him. The guy filming on his phone was stood right by him.
